Morbog is movin' on up (RT inspired orks)

    Welcome!

After some time off, I am back to the world of mini painting. To get back to the grind of mini painting, I decided to sharpen my teeth with some orks. I've collected a few ork armies over the years, but this is the first with any real inspiration other than "these are bad moons and they like to kill stuff".

I never had the chance to play in the rogue trader days, but I've always loved the imagery portrayed when compared to the trite universe 40k has become now.

Here's the primary inspiration for the color scheme.

Here's the scheme applied to models. I plan to use the same scheme minus the flames on the arms.

Morbog's household boys were the bad moon unit from Ghazghkull's waaagh. From the fluff, a household generally provides one unit for the army. So, it looks like Morbog is leading his own waaagh now.

The list I created is still pretty rough. I tried to base it off of typical bad moon fluff.

    At 1k pts:
    1 Mega-Armoured Warboss

    1 Big Mek w/ KFF

    4x Mega-Nobz + Trukk

    9x Lootas + Mekboy

11x Choppa Boys + PK Nob + Trukk

    19x Shoota Boys + Nob

    3 Kanz w/ Grotzooka

Hopefully it will be a decent hammer/anvil list, but I'm not particularly worried. I won't even get to playtest it until I have it all built up and painted anyway.

Further down the road, I plan to add scratch-built tanks designed from epic scale models. A stompa will most likely make the cut as well as a unit or two of flash gitz purely for painting/modeling satisfaction. The SAG mek will get painted up for sure, since it is a fun model. Oh, and the FW kommandos...

The purpose of this log is to keep track of my progress as well as motivation to keep going, so any comments, suggestions, or questions is appreciated.

    Thanks for looking.

Oops, something tells me I shouldn't write threads so late at night. I forgot half of what I originally intended to post.

I guess I'll start the photos off with my workspace. I enjoy seeing other people's workspaces, so here it is. It could use with some more light and less spiders.

Here's the two test models I did. They're the first models I've painted in about a year, and I really half-assed them. I overworked or reworked some parts too much and the colors got muddied.

The idea was for the skin to be a bright green as a nod to the early days of technicolor orks. The pants are a boring blue, but I plan to tweak it a little to make it look more like denim. I originally left out the red dags on the pants, but the more I look at them, the more I like them. The yellow tunic is desaturated and dirty while the yellow on the metals is a little more vibrant, but not much so. I love bad moons, but the really bright yellow color scheme is kind of tired. Black for the straps to keep the scheme simple.

I need to pick up some sponges to do the weathering on the metals more effectively. I may get some pigment powders to experiment with. I think soot on the gun barrels and dust on their feet will add what I need to correctly bridge a gap between the clean colorful look of the past and the dark desaturated and realistic look that's much more popular now.

Here's the skin after I settled on how I would paint them. The highlights aren't as smooth as I would want, but I think it looks fine considering I have countless other ork boyz to paint.

I may attempt some better pictures in the sunlight. The colors are all jacked up in these.

Very nice! I wonder why no one has replied here yet. My turn then.

I like the idea a lot. Loving the rt era schemes and pattern I am really looking forward to seeing how your attempt develops. The vibrant colours are promising to say the least. I do not concur with your statement that you have messed up your paitjob. Thinking of the masses to paint you are doing a great job. It´s easy to see that you know what you are doing. Which makes me hope for shiny character models and such goodness.

    Subscribed, as they say.

    Cheers

The scheme looks great on these new boyz - I guess combinations of bright primary colours for orks hasn't really been their style since Gorkamorka, so it's very refreshing to see someone pick it up again! I like the new muted orks too, but both styles are cool.

Re: Morbog is movin' on up (RT inspired orks)

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I really appreciate them.

Today has been a pretty backwards day. I had the day off of work which is odd for a saturday (for me, atleast). I usually much prefer painting to modeling, but all of today's efforts went to converting up a madboy then a warboss. The idea for the madboy came from a WHFB orc from a starter set. I picked up several sprues secondhand for $1 each, so I figured I could easily make something from them.

I have 4 WIP burnas using the bodies with the leftovers from the lootas box, but they're nothing special. I'll post pics when they're painted.

My original list didn't even have a madboy and I never really considered one until I saw the banner in my original post. I am pretty happy with the results, though.

The warboss came from having a ton of those WHFB orc bodies and not really knowing what to do with all of them. The only boss I planned was in mega-armour, but I'd like to play some games soon, so I need a cheaper boss. I'm not sure how I feel about him. I think he looks more like a nob than a boss, but maybe a fancier coat of paint can remedy that.

The two of them are still WIP. They need some minor greenstuffing and I may add a few things after a day or two away from them.

    Thanks for looking!

Here's a WIP since it's been a few days. I've been stuck at work the last few days, so nothing much. The shirts and pants are done on the mob and dags are all blocked in. They still need highlights, the black (on the dags) cleaned up, and highlight that. That'll be done tomorrow and I'll have them finished by the end of the week, I hope.

I need to setup a better photo area as well. These just dont look right. I fiddled with them in photoshop to match the colors as accurate as possible. I guess I'll work on that tomorrow as well.

The madboy rocks! I like also this fresh green tone very much - reminds a bit on limes.

Looking good so far, it would look very cool if all the orks had the yellow hat on

Sorry for the lack of updates. Real life comes first. I'm planning a move half-way across the country, so lots is going on now. My girlfriend will be in Europe for two weeks, so I'll have a lot of painting time.

I'm way behind on where I hoped to be with this unit. I still have the metallics, small red bits, and other details to finish. The sponge technique for the chipped paint is significantly better than my previous attempt.

I'm torn about the bases. I assume the ashwaste type of base on my finished models is a better idea fluff-wise, but I really want to put resin urban bases on them.

I agree, but I don't have the skills with greenstuff yet.

    Thanks for looking.

I finally got my camera back, so here's an update. I need to find a day with agreeable humidity so I can varnish them and finish off the bases with a touch of static grass. Still, the photos are no good, so I'll continue to work on that. I think the camera may be the problem, unfortunately.

Next up is the nob for this unit, some lootas, and maybe converting meganobz.

Thanks. I love the RT ork books. Fairly often I glance through them for some inspiration and I find myself sitting there an hour later reading some short story or something.

I'd love to get him done soon. Unfortunately, I am moving at the end of this month, so all my painting is on hiatus until at least the first week of November. Once all that's set up again, I have a commission piece or two, the nob for this unit, then I may squeeze the madboy in because he really does need some attention.

As for an ork tally, I've got...
    10 slugga boys and nob
    10 shoota boys and nob
    4 lootas and mek
    4 burnas and mek
    weirdboy
    wimpy lil warboss

And in the mail, I have incoming...
    Aobr warboss
    10 nobs
    20 boys
    3 koptas

From what I understand, this is the contents of the AoBR box. I didn't realize it came with 10 nobs, though. I plan on turning 5 into meganobz, and the other 5 may end up as nobz or flashgitz.
