TOFP 2010-2011 - Vampire Counts

I`ve been 17 years in the hobby more or less, or rather more since Hero Quest was my first venture into the miniature hobby. Anyways, the first 12 years I played Warhammer Fantasy with some small distractions in 3rd ed 40K and Warhammer Quest. The point is I got so fed up with FB that I dropped it and vowed never to play it again..so instead I dedicated myself to 40K, Necromunda, Blood Bowl and lastly FoW. That was until I read the WD dedicated entirely to 8th ed FB. It really sparked that good old feeling in me again and I decided that it was high time that I did that Undead army I`ve been thinking about for years and years.

So with the TOFP coming in approx at the same time that I`m starting this army it suited me fine to join in to keep me on my toes and actually completing this. The only downfall to this all is that I`m on a very (VERY) tight hobby budget these days, having three kids and a GF that`s starting a 4 year long study this autumn. Luckily for me I`ve got a ton of stuff lying around and with a few trades with some friends of mine I`ve now got all I need for 2000 points +!

I`ve decided to do an Empire theme for my VC army, specifically Stirland. Here`s my testfig for the first zombie horde:


I`m going for a "standard" Empire look on this army with the formations so this zombie is part of the shooty attachment to the main block.

I know that it`s a bright Stirlander scheme but after looking through my WDs and coming across that brilliant VC army two guys made for a doubles tournie I figured that I wanted an army that had a little "visual pop" instead of the usual colour tones used on Undead armies. My GF told me it needed a bit more blood here and there to make it look a bit more natural, especially on the face and legs. I agree on it (as I`d dare anything else, lol!)!

I realise that the pic isn`t the best as some of the facial details are gone but I`ll do better on the next update! I like the idea that whatever is channeled into the corpses are shown, hence the glowing eye. That will be a theme throughout.

my only critic is that he has sleeves but no shirt.

In a horde it wouldn't even be noticeable mate.
The effect on the eye is ace though, you goign to do this upon all zombies with "intact" faces?
Would be awesome!

I plan on doing the eye effect on all of the zombies and skellies. The vamps will have it as they control them naturally, while the necromancers will have it on their staffs or something that`s appropiate. This will also be my etheral/insubstantional colour.

The colour that binds so to speak

It would show up a bit better on a darker color scheme, but I do like the effect and the thought behind it. Little details make an army project that much cooler.

Here`s the start of the first rank of zombie horde#1 aka the shooty detachment:

As you can see I mix in what I have, luckily the Moot is really close to Stirland so the halflings are quite at home in the unit and it breaks up the symmetry in the block quite nicely.

The zombie in the first picture looks odd. He has sleeves, but they aren't attached to anything. You could add some torn clothing from green stuff.

Here`s the first Necromancer:


I wanted to continue to play on the Empire look so with a blister of grail something from Bretonnia I did some minor conversions and I think he looks more or less like a Warrior Priest. I tried to make him look young but very drawn, due to the strain of necromancy on a low level mage. I think it went pretty well. Also since he`s animating the dead not being animated I thought it obvious that his powers came through his staff and not from within himself. So pretty close to the fluff I would guess.

Been busy painting up my first zombie unit, and with a game with the vamps and a BB game this week I haven`t had any time to post any pics.

First up is an overall army pic of what I`ve got:

From top left:
Black Knights and Vamp Lord on Abyssal Terror
From bottom left:
Zombie Horde#1, Varghulf, Necromancer, Skeletons, Vampire on foot and Wight King Bsb.


From top left:
Necromancer on Corpse Cart and Greenskin themed zombies for Raise Dead (I play against a greenskin player)
From bottom left:
Necromancer, Zombie Horde#2 and Spirit Host

As you can see it`s quite a lot of work ahead of me in turning this into something worthile!

I mentioned playing a game. I found out that I needed some more punch in there as my grinding took way too long...btw, Black Knights rock!

So I started on a new vampire character, or rather his (hell)steed:

Head is made out of two banner tops, wings from who knows where, legs from old genestealers (as in Space Hulk old) and the horse body I got from a mate.

My first zombie horde is done but as I`m holding back on the pic there for the first ToFP update I thought I`d show the first rank of the main block of infantry, the Skeletons:

Going with the Stirland theme I kinda see these guys as victims of Curse of Years and then raised into service yet again.
