UPDATE
(sort of)
So here's the completed, done and dusted Warp-Lightning Cannon
Sadly even after a few dozen attempts, I simply can't get the whole model in focus. So I took a second picture showing how the gun part actually looks.
Now onto the future, it's my birthday in 5 days which means that as usual I'll get a fairly nice amount of cash and maybe some Warhammer stuff right on the day too. Either way this combined with the fact that I'm on holidays for the next few weeks! (woo) mean's there should be some serious painting going on sometime soon after the 15th.
Currently however I have nothing else to paintso until then,
Thanks for reading and bye.
Happy Birthday to me! (2 days ago)
So for my Birthday I received some cashwhich is always nice. And also, a box of Stormvermin, another Warp-Lightning Cannon/Plagueclaw Catapult, a box of Giant Rats/ Rat Ogres, 3 Gutter Runners and Skweel Gnawtooth. And I know I'm getting a Grey Seer this afternoon.
I didn't really want Skweel to be honest, but he's a nice model so that's okay and I've been thinking of taking this army in a more Clan Moulder heavy direction anyway.
So this brings me up to my goal of a 40 Stormvermin Horde. Out of that box I also made a BSB but I'll discuss that more later when I put up pictures, right now I'm a bit too busy with a party in a few hours .
Earlier today however I went over to a mates pace and we had a nice 1250pt game. It was great fun and I actually won! Him using his just starting Daemon Army vs. my Skaven. I took a 30 Stormvermin unit which performed very well, killing a unit of 6 Flesh Hounds and 3 Flamers single-handedly and assisting in killing ~20 Bloodletters and ~20 Horrors. My 2 new rat ogres (combined with the 2 older ones) however didn't do so well, they killed a single fiend of slaanesh and then got wiped out by Flamers.
I killed everything on the table except his BSB who fought on 'till the bitter end! But I only lost... my Warlock, my Ogres, the cannon and my general - whom challenged the BSB at the end just for fun but got killing blow'd.
But a very fun game.
I think I'm going shopping tomorrow and then soon I shall take pictures of all my new tools of destruction! And then begin painting them
Sorry for the lack of pictures or anything,
Thanks for reading.
I like what you've done so far. The rust effect in particular is very nice - and compliments the painting style to give a nice "dirty" effect on the models - which isn't very easy to achieve. Well done.
Personally I'm not 100% sold on the mixed colours in the Stormvermin robes. I'd have thought a unit all in "white" would look better. But that is me - I do like your little stories behind individual models though![]()

I like the cloaks of the SV. I use white skull, devlan wash and highlight with white, but I don't like the result. I will try with Dheneb Stone, a see if it works as good as you get. Nice painting, I like the rust over the metal. How do you do it?
WHF Games 8th edition:W-D-L
Skaven: 18-2-8
High Elves: 11-0-1
Lizardmen: 8-0-1
Dwarves: 6-0-1
Ogre Kingdoms: 0-0-1
I'm kind of with you on the coloured cloaks. I, at least, think that Stormvermin should be fairly uniformed, to that effect: the second batch of 20 will be all white. Thanks for the compliments
Thanks mate, yeah I use Dheneb Stone because it's a foundation paint and goes on well in one coat. Skull white I imagine would not do this, unless you're undercoating them white.
As to the rust: I basecoat with Scorched Brown then stipple on bestial brown, dark flesh, vermin brown, blazing orange etc etc to get a nice realistic rust looking colour. Then do highlights and scratches with chainmail.
Hope that helps
Progress, or the lack thereof.
Yesterday I went shopping and bought 2 more Rat Ogre and Rat Pack boxes. A Gutter Runner Blister (for a total of 6) and a Doomwheel, which I have assembled (not completely of course) and will undercoat shortly.
This gives me the 1500pt army (list) that I designed a while ago - it all just needs to be assembled and painted now.
Thanks for reading![]()
Hey everyone.
So here is the painting list:
6 Rat Ogres
31 Giant Rats
9 Packmasters
Skweel Gnawtooth
18 Stormvermin
1 (Homemade) Warlock Engineer
1 BSB
1 Doomwheel
1 Plagueclaw Catapult and,
3(soon to be 6 - I have another blister on order) Gutter Runners
And just a few pictures of the more interesting ones of those:
The complete half painted Stormvermin Horde
The Giant Rat unit (other 10 rats are split into 2 rat darts of 5)
This formation allows for 24 S3 attacks, which should hurt those blasted fast cav and skirmishers quite a bit - for only 90ish points.
The Rat Ogres
The Battle Standard Bearer. I'll take more pictures at more angles once he's painted but that's basically the old metal Greatsword Banner on the front and the lance pennant from the Griffon Rider in IoB coming off the back.
And the Engineer
The weapon is made from a halberd with the WLC gun lightning bolt instead of a blade. The big orb on his hip/ back is supposed to be the Brass Orb.
Thanks for reading and looking, I'll take better pictures and more of them once things are painted.
UPDATE
Sort of
So I've played a few games recently and I'm still loving the play style, the character and the randomness of this army. And I'm still loving the models and specifically, painting the models.
So I can see myself probably collecting Skaven for a long long time.
As to progress: there's none that is worth taking pictures of.
I've painted seven giant rats, and the rest are all half painted so the finished product should be done by the end of tonight, or tomorrow morning. It's taken so long because I'm back to school now and also because 'someone' else is taking up most of my spare time (not that I'm complaining)
But here's a picture:
This is the Grey Seer I got for my birthday, it's the older model as you can probably see and I'm going to have fun painting him, but not yet*. Also, I've bought the Games Day 2011 Warlord model off of eBay
* I'm going to finish painting the contents of my 1500pt list first. That is: the 2 rat darts, the rest of the larger giant rat unit, the gutter runners, the BSB, the Stormvermin and the Doomwheel... It's kind of intimidating now...
Anywho, pictures of the giant rats to follow shortly.
Thanks.
Awaysome model !!
Congrats with your Birthday and with the Model.
I do love these retro models, look at my plog and you can see what I´m doing with these kind of models.......
.
This is a Dark Age, a Bloody age, an age of Daemons and of Sorcery. It is an age of Battle and Death, and of the world´s ending. Amidst all of the Fire, Flame and Fury it is a time, too, of Mighty Heroes, of Bold Deeds and Great Courage. William King

Thanks very much, I like the retro models too and I'm quite jealous of your collection (specifically the metal plague monks and rat ogres)
PROGRESS
So here's the 21 Giant Rats that I started painting yesterday.
Very little detail put into these because even from a somewhat close distance, you wont pick any of it out unless you're actually examining a specific model. But anyway, I feel like they blend in with the base too much and I might paint the next batch black and then mix them all in for variety.
I bought some gloss varnish recently and I've used that on some of the pustules and tentacle things on some of the rats. Others have some blood on their face. Again, it's hard to see any of these details.
There's also a book and a barrel in there... I cheated... but I think because I have 4 bases with 2 rats on them, that might make up for it.
Oh and this is the first time I've used the modular movement tray set and it's really good, having to add sand myself is a nuisance but oh well.
That's probably all for this week as I've got work and then school and yeah... but next up should be the Doomwheel
Thanks.
UPDATE
A bit of progress on the Doomwheel:
Still quite WIP, I've left to paint the pilot, crewman, lightning prong thingies, all the wires and all the warpstone and the little cog things that hold the wheels on.
But the wheels and the main chassis are completely done and I'm pretty happy with them.
That's all for now, any comments, criticism, questions, all appreciated.
Thanks.
Looking good. I like how your rusted metal almost (but not quite) blends in with the wood colouring. This should look really nice once you have added the extra colours for all the remaining details.

this a dirty looking horde! in the best possible way!! the look great
this aint sea world
Hey everyone! Long time no post, hey?
But, this one isn't about Skaven, it's about High Elves!
Here's the story, me and my bunch of friends/ group of gamers are all simultaneously starting a new army, building it up to 500pts and then we're going to battle it out in a few months. Whoever has the coolest looking and wins the most battles in our little battle-day-thing we'll have, or a bit of both or something (I don't know how it's being worked out) will win a prize!!!
So, I'm doing High Elves. The fact that technically I already have the models is okay, I'm told, because I've only painted two of them.
Why am I doing High Elves? I like the models, the fluff's pretty cool and the play-style is infinitely different to that of Skaven and I like to mix it up every now and then. Mostly it's because I won't have to spend too much money to make what I have already into a (good) 500pt list.
But enough talk, here's a picture:
2 of those Sword Masters were already done, the one in the middle was painted just this morning.
Thanks for looking, comments and criticism all appreciated
Bye.
Very nice work. A shame that you're shifting your focus to those poncy Elfs, but hey, at least they'll look amazing![]()

My Skaven Painting Log. - At a crawl...
Very nice pointy ears you have there ... can't wait to see what you paint for a 500 points list, I'm thinking about expanding the HE force I got in my IoB set, but I don't really know what to buy (apart from paints, of course).
UPDATE
10 Archers
Pretty standard unit, the mage (see next picture) fits on the end of the unit, making it look like the standard bearer is pointing at something and telling the mage where to hurl his fireballs.
And here is said Mage:
Still a WIP of course, the fire is all that's really done.
And lastly, here's a 4th Sword Master
And the 500pt army list I'm working towards.
Mage @ 110pts
Silver Wand
10 Archers @ 125pts
Musician, Standard
8 Sword Masters @ 126pts
Musician
5 Reavers @ 85pts
Great Eagle @ 50pts
Thanks.
First off, really nice Swordmasters you have there, and I like where your Mage is going ...
Your army list is almost identical to mine :
- Mage, Dispell Scroll, Ironcurse Icon
- 15 Archers, Full Command
- 5 Elyrian Reavers
- Repeater Bolt Thrower
I do have 10 Swormasters form IoB, but I'm a bit wary of including them in a 500 points list ...
Ooh, the Elf's looking really good - I particularly like the flames!
