Re: colour by numbers - my fantasy hobby log

It's 2am and we finished playing our second game of 8th edition WHFB about half an hour ago. First game was Empire vs. Dark Elves, second game was Beastmen vs. Dark Elves. Both games were extremely close.

First reaction to the new rules: The game changed a lot and it's difficult to get used to the new rules first! During the first game we had to look up pretty much each and every rule.

Once you get to know the new mechanics, the game is a lot faster and the single phases of the game are lot more bloody than before: One turn of Purple Sun killing about 50% of 2 units and damaging a third unit, a unit of Bestigors grinding down a unit of Black Guard (took 4 turns and the help of a Wargor BSB and 2 helpful castings of "Wyssann's Wildform"!).

20 DE crossbowmen armed with light armour, hand weapon + shield are a pain. 40 armour piercing shots per turn are a horrible thing to face.

It seems there are a lot less Victory Points to be earned if you are unlucky/don't focus on damaged units: I had 3 units with one miniature left each -> no VP for the other player (did we play that wrong?).

One thing I really like is terrain now being part of the game instead of creating "black holes" on the table...

One thing I'm dissapointed in is the new Beastmen armybook. The army seems to be more monotonical and a lot less fun to play now: Ambush is pretty much gone and all you get to do is moving forward trying to reach combat. Maybe it was my army selection, but that was what I got from the first game. Primal Fury is great (without it Beastmen core units couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag).

Not a whole lot done today, but I started assembling another box of Gors and found the odd box of Minotaurs I bought from ebay some time ago. In case I plan using them they'll need to be re-/painted too.

Following mrtn's advice, I added arms with moulded on shields to some of the Ungors shown earlier and assembled another Ungor musician using the horn from the new plastic Marauder Horsemen.

In addition I continued working on a unit of Harpies (built from maxmini resin wings and GW Ghouls).

Last but not least a quick look at the "To Do" box...

(Still not sure what to do with the old Harpies/Gargoyles...replace bases and continue using them or should I sell them and go the Ghoul+plastic wings route?)

Nice progress. I especially like the Harpy. And the to do box is a good Idea^^....maybe I should try something similar to keep me motivated.

Is that a converted Centigor in your to-do-Box?

Re: colour by numbers - my fantasy hobby log

Well, the stuff seen in the to-do box is only the tip of the iceberg...I'd need a larger box to store all the unbuilt/unpainted Beastmen miniatures I bought within the last 6 (2004-2010) years.

It's probbaly a good thing that all these miniatures/boxes are stored in different parts of the hobby room. It's likely that it'd discourage me if I was able to see all these miniatures at once.

Note to self: more painting - less assembling!

    *edit*
Yes, that's a Centigor in the to-do box.

The Centigor looks good so far. A very good (and affordable) method to build centigors^^.

After the arrival of the 3 Giant Boars I ordered from www.tabletop-art.eu, I quickly started assembling the herd (they still need a bit of Green Stuff work to cover a few gaps here and there).

Magnets need to be added to the bases too before I can glue on the Pumbas and start basecoating/painting (yeah, I said painting. Stay tuned! ).

Re: colour by numbers - my fantasy hobby log

Sadly I'm suffering from a serious lack of free time currently, so I can't update this log as often as I hoped for.

Hopefully there'll be a bit more time for assembling, converting (maybe even painting! ) & updating this log next weekend.

Quick Update to show I'm still alive and working on getting my Beastmen done...

Started assembling a new box of Gors and continued doing bases (glued these bright yellow railroad stones to the bases today. Don't worry, they'll not stay bright yellow. )

That's all I could do since posting the last update (nearly a whole month ago ).

    *edit*
nearly forgot the Razorgors, their bases got some attetion too while I was at it.
Btw, the Ungor handler and his pet-Pumba will get chained to each other later.

Next time I'll take pictures using a proper light source again, you can't really see anything on these pictures taken today. Sorry.

Re: colour by numbers - my fantasy hobby log

A small update is better than none, right?

Well, I spent the last 2 hours adding sand and pebbles to the bases of all the Beastmen minis in the to-do box.
I used my usual mix of white glue/wood glue and water to archive this.

I'll try to use the next chance to undercoat them. I'll be using black/white spray paint, meaning I'll have to wait for a day

    a) without rain
    b) where I'm back home before dusk/sunset.

    Quite rare these days...

Sadly there wasn't any daylight left when I took these pictures a few minutes ago. Maybe I'll try to do better pictures at the weekend.

All in all I'd rate this paintjob as tabletop quality and I'll try to paint all my miniatures at least like this. The bases aren't completeyly finished yet, snow will be added to them later. I'll finish them as soon as I have more finished Beastmen.

    Hope you like them.

Looks good from what i can see. You might want to go for some bigger pics and maybe a white background.

    2011

First update of the new year...

The first 11 days of the new year passed by and I managed to paint another set of 10 Ungor Raiders. If I continue like this I'll have 300+ painted miniatures by the end of the year! (Yeah, who am I kidding. )

The picture isn't really a lot larger, but at least this time it features a white background...

This was the last batch of Ungor Raiders (20 miniatures all in all), now I'll have to switch to painting some other type of Beastmen...

The next 3 miniatures I painted were these 3 Giant Boars I got from Tabletop-Art.
They are a little smaller than the GW one but at least they don't look as silly .

To use up the free spare space on the bases I recycled an old Ungor as a pigmaster.

    hehe, Sylass.....

A little smaller than the GW ones you say? Damn, from the pics on the site i was hoping they'd be bigger.
They're still nice though, and i look forward to seeing more of your beasts completed.
    I miss Chris Farley.
