Lol thank you! Indeed tis a shame netherlands is rather a long way away. Though I'll be moving closer in september! To Norwich!

thank you! I've had a great deal of fun with them. After I finish the blood bowl team I'll probably need to do a bit of dreadfleet painting (tale of board game painters you see...) and then I'll be sure to get on with some eldar! Got a unit of 15 Wyches to finish painting.

They really are... not only are they monopose, the stance of them are so weird! Quite unnatural. Speaking of unnatural I knew there was something wrong with that arm! Thank you for pointing out what it was. I'll fix that directly!

I've got some more pics of the remaining building work to show off which I'll put up when i have more time. All the players are now finished. I'll start the green stuffing tonight hopefully. That could take a while... I also played a friend at 40k today I got in 2 games. Since Im at home I had to use my guard which Im very out of practice with (that's my excuse anyway lol). I've taken a bunch of photos so a bit of a battle report may be in order. We also tried out the new death world rules in this months white dwarf? Good fun! Quite vicious at times but we both got hit pretty evenly. Unfortunately we were playing the third scenario, in which at the start of each player turn lightning strikes the tallest/highest up model on the board and foolishly my leman russ had a rather long antenna! Lol I'll tell you about it properly soon.

They sure were! Was good fun. I'd been feeling a bit disenchanted with my guard collection but playing with them again gave me good feelings towards them again . I'll never have the patience to paint that much white again though so I doubt I'll ever add to them.

Got the pics of the final few players. slightly less ambitious conversions for these guys though. First up is a catcher half leaping:

Next up is a blitzer converted from a basic blocker. Gonna sculpt a bit more armour on this guy to make him look different.

    And finally my remaining blockers:

I also have some pics of my friends' word bearer rhinos. I thought they looked ace, especially considering his chaos used to be painted in bright slaaneshi pink/purple scheme lol.

Battle Report 1: Imperial Guard (Yay!) Vs. Chaos (Boo!)

    Annihilation, pitched battle

    Imperial army:

Command Squad: medipack, vox, regimental standard
Infantry platoon: command squad (2x melta, standard, vox), 3 infantry squads, lascannon squad, plasma squad
Veteran squad: 3x meltas, demo charge, chimera
Storm Trooper squad (10): grenade launcher+flamer
    Ogryn Squad (5): chimera
    Leman Russ Demolisher: plasma cannons
    Leman Russ Vanquisher: multi meltas

    Total: 1750

Chaos army (from what I remember):

    Terminator Lord
Terminator squad (4): chain fist, meltas, heavy flamer
2x marine squads (10): melta, flamer, rhino
    berserker squad (10): rhino
    chosen (5): melta, flamer
    raptors (5): melta
    Defiler
    Land Raider

    Total: 1750

Fortunately we used the same list for both games so I only have to write it out once . Deployment shots:

Chosen in reserve ready to outflank

Ogryns, vets and stormtroopers in reserve.

    Turn 1

The forces of chaos launch a sudden offensive against the brave planetary defenders, who unfortunately had arrived wearing completely the wrong camouflage. The vehicles of chaos gun their engines and race towards imperial lines, the rhinos popping smoke as they go (represented here by lines of razorwire, no expense is spared in our special effects department!)

Targeting one of the primary threats to their mechanised assault, the lascannon squad is gunned down by the land raider. In response, the leman russ demolisher advances and blasts its tracks to smitherines, forcing the lord and terminator retinue to advance on foot. Ignoring the advancing rhinos/wall of smoke, the vanquisher opens fire on the defiler, achieving precisely squat.

    Turn 2

The advance continues bringing the chaos forces dangerously close to imperial lines. The chosen appear on the guard's right flank hoping to melta the demolisher, but are fortunately out of half range. In the imperial turn, all reserves arrive, vets and ogryns drive on to the left flank while the storm troopers deep strike in behind the raptors, scattering perfectly to avoid mishaps!

The chosen are mowed down quite effectively. Demolisher scores direct hit on the terminators, but every single ******* invunerable save is passed! Fortunately the lascannon spares me from total embarresment. The vanquisher manages to stun the berserker rhino, but the multilaser on the ogryn's chimera wrecks it (some dedicated tank killer!). Guard squad with a melta approaches rhino to try and knock it out but misses. The storm troopers unfortunately only manage to take out 2 raptors with their hell guns (5+ to wound are really annoying after playing as dark eldar!).

    Turn 3

The chaos forces hit guard lines. Expect scenes of a distressing nature (for me) from here on in. Berserkers charge the vanquisher, taking it out. Raptors charge the stormtroopers (taking them out) and normal marines jump out their rhino to take out the brave (if foolish) guard squad. The defiler desides to climb over a building:

    Re: HereBeDragons' Paintathon

    Turn 3 continued

Well it appears my cunning strike with the storm troopers let me down lol. Shooting commences in earnest without achieving much against the power armour. The demolisher tries again to take out the termis, this time wiping out the squad but the lord survives. The vets chimera takes out another rhino, and the command squad filled with too much righteous fury and not enough sense charges the marine squad and are butchered.

    Turn 4

The defiler, having finished playing in the building takes out the veteran's chimera, killing a marine and 3 veterans in the resulting explosion. Other marine squad kills one guard squad while the raptors and berserkers take out the other. The veterans have the moment of the match! With their demo charge, they successfully destroy the defiler as well as 5 marines!

Ogryns charge one squad of marines and continue to bash away at them for the rest of the game.

    Turns 5 and 6

With the enemy closing in, my brave survives hid in the corner and attempt to shield the tank with their lives. Unfortunately the meat shield is wiped out by the raptors, but they do manage to take one out in combat! The beserkers destroy the platoon command squad with no problems at all. The glorious veterans are then charged and killed by the surviving (and very angry marines). With very little left on the board, my demolisher attempts to take out the beserkers. The main shot scatters put lands squarely on the lord, destroying him. The other weapons manage to take out a few beserkers but not enough to make a difference at this stage. In my final turn, the last chimera manages to tank shock the final marine squad off the board in a wonderfully flukey display!

Final score: Imperial guard 7 vs Chaos 11. Victory to chaos!

Lol yes it certainly was! I wasn't expecting him to have quite so many transports, which probably contributed to my defeat. I certainly won't be getting rid of my guard or anything like that, but I've got 4000+ points fully painted, so I don't even know what I would add! Too many other projects to finish first though

Im always happy to distract people from their current projects with new (or old) ones! The scourges are pretty high on my to do list atm though I want to finish a squad of wyches first. Within the next couple of months I'll be painting them!

Glad you enjoyed it! I won't say I was quite so pleased to see them win though . If you do the silos like I have, with the card wrapped round it to look like a frame, I have a tip: use a ball point pen and press into the card on the inside to make little bulges on the outside to look like rivets. doesn't take long and works reasonably well!

I'll have a report for the second battle written at some point soon so stay tuned!

Thanks! It sure is nice to play with a fully painted army, makes all the effort seem worth while. You just have to set yourself a target for the year/month and do your best to stick to it. Say you want an army finished by the end of the year. That might work out at approximately a unit/vehicle a month which should be pretty achievable for most armies. Then its just a case of trying to get in a regular painting session. I personally try and do a small amount every day since I have a permanent painting tray set up, but if you have to set up each time, try and set aside one evening a week and get a good few hours in. Its certainly satisfying to get a batch of 4 or 5 models painted in one sitting. Good luck anyway!

Right, I have a bit of spare time so I thought I'd write up that second battle report. We used the Death World rules from the April white dwarf, so for those of you who don't have it, here's a quick summary. At the start of each players turn, that player rolls on the Hazard tables to determine what craziness is happening this turn; a D6 is rolled to determine which table is used first of all, and then another D6 is rolled to determine the effect. There are 4 tables (the other 2 results correspond to either you or your opponent choosing the table):

    1. Environmental Hazards: acid rain, lightning and vicious hail make up this set of hazards, generally effecting low armour save models while leaving power armoured chaps unharmed.
    2. Indigenous hazards: the local fauna comes to live and its hungry! Predominantly effects units in terrain only.
    3. Seismic Hazards: earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The opposite of the previous table, it predominantly affects units not in terrain.
    4. Hellscape Hazards: chaos literally ensues as the skies burn and meteors plummet onto the battlefield!

Although the effects can be quite destructive in some cases, we found that both players were equally screwed over, certainly there was no case for moaning!

Battle Report 2: Imperial Guard Vs. Chaos

Death World: Weather the Storm mission

This mission is an adapted annihilation mission with random deployment rules. 1 point is awarded for each kill point earned and 1 point for each surviving unit in your army. For deployment, your half of the table is divided into 3 equal 2'x2' squares. For each unit, you roll a D3, with each result corresponding to a different square in your deployment zone where this unit must be deployed. It can be placed anywhere in the square more than 18" from an enemy. In addition, a full storm is going on, so to represent this, for every roll on the hazard tables, an additional 'seeker lightning' effect is resolved on a 4+. Also, the thunder is very loud meaning you use the majority leadership in a unit rather than the highest.

Seeker lightning is one of the more characterful effects: find the unit on the table that is highest from the table, including terrain, antenna, flying stands, banner poles etc. This model is hit by 2D6 S8 AP5 hits. After a quick comparison we discovered (much to my joy) that my leman russ vanquisher was tallest thanks to an overly large antenna (damnit!). Still at least I wasn't using my scourge unit in this battle

We used the same armies and terrain set up as before. I got to deploy first, and since guard platoons count as one force organisation slot, I deployed this first:

One squad kindly takes one for the team to drive any chaos squads back 18"! Cunning hey? My opponent failed to seize the initiative so I took the first turn.

    Turn 1

I start by rolling a meteor strike on the hazard tables: D3+1 meteors rain down. blast template, scatter 2D6", S7 AP2 under template, and all models within 3" of the template take a S3 hit! I take out 3 raptors and stun a rhino. The lascannons stun another rhino but no other damage is caused. The chaos player rolls Ganshing Earth: an unengaged infantry unit (not in terrain) takes a S3 hit on any model that fails an initiative test. Only one guardsman dies. However, lightning strikes, knocking off my vanquishers main gun and stunning the crew (great). Otherwise, the vehicles that can move charge forwards.

    Turn 2

I start by effectively taking the vanquisher out of the game: seeker lightning strikes twice, taking out lascannon, multi melta and immobilising it. On the bright side, my demolisher lascannon beautifully strikes and wrecks the land raider! My guard on the right flank create a welcome party for the chosen that will inevitably outflank there:

The chaos player rolls Tectonic shift: one deployment zone is chosen, all non-vehicle units inside it must take a pinning test. Unsurprisingly he chooses the square with my platoon in, but fortunately only one squad fails. The chosen arrive as predicted and butcher the nearest squad. The termis from the land raider meltagun the veterans chimera.

    Turn 3

Ground collapse is rolled: I choose an unengaged infantry model (a terminator), and he has to pass an initiative test or lose the model and allow me to pick another. Alas he passes and we get on with the battle! My Ogryns arrive, but await their opportunity for the time being. My lascannon squad blows up the berserker rhino, killing two of them in the process. massed shooting kills all the chosen bar the champion, leaving him feeling very exposed. The veterans then unleash melta fury on the terminators, but only kill one, plus 2 berserkers from the scattering demo charge.

A meteor then descends on my lascannon squad killing two of them (there sure are alot of meteors about). The defiler repeats its building scaling escapades of the previous game to get round the LR wreck and shoots the multilaser off the ogryns chimera. The chosen champ charges a guard squad but dies before causing too much bother. The berserkers then charge and wreck the demolisher, while the termis slaughter the veteran squad.

    Turn 4

Seeker lightning strikes again! However, since the defiler had decided to scale the building partially, it was now higher up than my leman russ and so was hit! Rolling superbly well, it was penetrated 4 times (out of 5 hits!), causing it to explode! My stormtroopers deep strike in to shoot up either the beserkers or the raptors, however scatter to face the terminators. In hindsight it would have been much more sensible to just deep strike them into a far flung corner of the board to get the point for surviving, but thats not heroic enough! My infantry platoon unleashes their full fury on the beserkers, finishing them off, while the Ogryns and their rhino kill the last of the raptors. The storm troopers manage to cause a wound on the lord but unfortunately thats it. The lascannon team stuns the rhino approaching from the north.

Chaos rolls Rain of Virtiol: all units not in buildings or transport vehicles suffer 2D6 S1 AP5 hits, which takes out a terminator and 4 guardsmen (a very reasonable trade off in my book!). The terminators roast all the storm troopers, leaving one alive:

Brave final stand... not to spoil the surprise but he didn't make it lol. A rhino cheekily snipes the final lascannon squad, while the marines from the stunned rhino shoot up and panic the plasma gun squad. The final squad of marines charge and wipe out the company command squad. We roll to see if the game ends but (unfortunately for me) it continues (you roll on turn 4 in this mission).

    Turn 5

I roll Haven of Sanctity, which forces you to rally any one fleeing unit (including an enemy unit if you have no viable choices!). This allows my plasma gunners to rally. Combined shooting and an ogryn charge bring the marine squad down to one man (4 1s to wound!!!) but fails to break them.

Lasher Nest: all models partially in a terrain piece take a S2 hit, but fortunately no wounds stick. The north most squad of marines charge and kill a squad of guard. The terminators then charge into the Ogryns. Unfortunately they break and are run down. We roll to see if a 6th turn is played but it ends now!

    Final results

    guard chaos
    kills 6 9
    survivors 5 6
    total 11 15

So a win for chaos at the end! Cannier play by me with the stormtroopers and if the ogryns had finished off that marine squad, and the swing in points might have won me the game but alas not to be! Hope you enjoyed my report!

I have finished all the green stuff work on my blood bowl team! I think Im getting better at it, although hands are still a serious issue! One or two came out well but the others are a little crap. Hopefully they won't be too noticeable under all the paint

throwers first up. Very happy with how my converted blocker on the right turned out:

Catchers next. I did my best to fix the problem with the middle ones arm, hopefully it looks less broken now

Blitzers. The one in the middle has a horrible hand. The right hand one was converted from a blocker and Im rather proud of how he turned out

    Blockers, the first four

    and the final three

So there we go! Talabheim Tossers are ready for painting!

Impressive battlefield. I love battle report pics. They give so much atmosphere. Your friend has a nice army, that Rhino looked really cool.

Thanks! Its just a shame I don't get to play on it very often any more...

I've tried out the textured paint on the bases! Here's my brief look: first up the pot...

These are soooooo much better than the previous pots. They stay open! As you can see, the paint is quite thick, but it goes on quite nicely. It would be hard to spread it across evenly, but I doubt you'd want that anyway. The final product ends up a little thin and patchy, rather than totally covered in sand like most bases I've done before, but that seems a bit more realistic. Certainly after a second layer it creates a very torn up dirty muddy look.

This next pic shows the difference between 1 layer (right) and 2 layers (left):

I also tried out painting some on to the bases of feet of the running models to represent the caked mud. Again, two layers would probably be better than one. With this its certainly easier to add heavier weathering, which is a bonus. Overall it seems easier than going through gluing on sand and painting it all (I hate painting sand), plus the weathering bonus. It also creates much more realistic effects. I'll still see how good it looks once I've washed/drybrushed it. At the moment its still a bit plain.

Hmm, the stuff seems to be really good for things like thanks and whatnot, creating mud patches.
Well, I can't be bothered revisiting all my tanks for that, but cool to see how it works. I think I'll stick to sand for now, as it seems a bit cheaper.
