Hell yeah! You have to keep your wits about you with a dark elf army.

Some dirty W.I.P shots of the unit which has been bulked up to 24 elves and a slave:

I'm always slightly disappointed taking early casualties from gun fire, magic blasts, or my own casters carving up a few elves for more power. I spend so much time painting these models, so why should I take them off the table so soon? Solution? grab a few slaves and shove them in the unit. I've created a tiny vignette of a particularly spiteful elf taking exception to a slave walking with such elite warriors. Perhaps the poor unfortunate stood on his heel while marching? I plan on adding another few slaves to bolster the unit.

It's coming together nicely, I really admire your perseverance, the effect is definitely worth the effort you've put in. Unit filler and champion look especially cool.

    Keep going!

Are your dark elves in scale with the new high elves? (from IoB and new plastic sets?)

I really like your work, seems long and tedious but gives great results. Keep it up !

That spearmen unit looks amazing mate, great work! as for your black guard you could try ogryn flesh wash and perhaps with the black mix a bit of blue in with the color you using to do the highlight, maybe something along the lines of the old midnight blue, just a tad darker for you first stage highlight.

Love the unit filler there. Honestly, you should go ahead and do some more of them. Little details like this really make a person's army come alive. Great work!

Thank you both. I'm planning on adding a few more slaves for the unit. I'm waiting for a shipment of brass rod now to finish off the unit.

your army is looking fantastic, the slave idea is great, why spend all this time making this spear men just to have to take them off the table in the first few turns. it also works wel with the back story of the dark elves.

Waiting about for parts is the worse part, I have that same problem with my Khorne warriors, ATM I am waiting for some new bases and Chaos knight weapons. I'm sure however your rods will be well worth the wait, I just hope you are not waiting for stuff to arrive from america like me

@ Logan - In the spirit of one-up-man-ship i'm getting the rods from china. They still haven't arrived and i'm getting concerned! I've used the company before so I remain hopeful.

I forgot that I had close up's of the champion -

I have finally finished one of my warriors! Unsurprisingly, it's captain since it was the most fun to sculpt. Here I present Khatalha Khela’Mandour roughly translates as Khaltalha, Murderer of Lions. Captain of Cynath’s Household Guard.

Khatalha served a commission as a corsair aboard the Kraken's Tempest - the Black Ark that first ferried Cynath across to the old world. Khathla came to prominence in Cynath’s court when, after his detachment of Corsairs had run down a Chariot manned by Characian White Lions, in lieu of the usual payment, he instead took the white Lion's pelt. A satisfactory trade for the loss of his right eye. Khatalha knew the pelt would be a potent symbol of command in developing his career, and was duly appointed captain of Cynath’s household guard when the despot prince took part in the grand invasion of Ulthan.

    - This backstory only developed when I found a spare Cloak from the old Korhil kit.

Wow! This all looks really amazing! Really great conversions! They look so much better this way.
May I offer a suggestion for the chainmail? When you have put on the brown stuff, I have found it extremely helpful to score lines either horizontally or vertically (depends on the look you are going for, try both to see which one fits better) at an even interval. This way you will keep the "discipline" of the chainmail. If you do it vertically (fx) you can start from either the bottom or the top (again, find out what is your preference) and go across (when pushing to the right into each line, you go from right to left and vice versa) pushing to the side and a little down with a needle (when starting from the bottom). This way you can control the shape to a very high degree. I have far from mastered this technique yet, but seeing how talented a sculptor you are, you should have no problem nailing it.

I hope this helps a little bit. The chainmail is the only weak point i have noticed in your sculpting.

Your conversions are fantastic. I love that you've taken the time to make your warriors look good, man. That takes some serious moxie.

Thank you everyone for the compliments.

@ Tony Flow: Cheers for the tip, I'll try that out. Reading your struggles with chain-mail makes me feel that I am not alone with my frustrations! Hopefully I can pull off a triumph like you have with your shaggoth.

I think that another problem I've given myself is using the brown stuff. I've never used it before and I started using it because I read that it gives better results when sculpting hard surfaces, like armour. It's very different from using Green Stuff (which I have more experience using), and I don't think I quite appreciated that when I started. For my next batch of warriors, I'm going to sculpt the chanimail exclusively with greenstuff.

I've aching to paint these guys now, but I determined to leave off until I have the unit completed sculpted. While I have been waiting for the brass rods to arrive, I've started work on the crossbowmen. Already I know that these guys won't be to everyone's taste, but the unit champion is quite pretty. I'm also gathering bits for my Cold One's and Executioners - if anyone has kabalite warrior banners please get in touch!

LilLoser, I just wanted to take the time and say your work here is outstanding. I am particulary in love with the spear elves, every one is to such a great standard. I did really want to get my dark elves rolling but found the plastics a little off putting with my image of what they should look like, but I think you have nailed it. Looks like now I may take the plunge and try to make a start rather then wait years on a new plastic range.

This all leads me too, parts on your elves? Am I right in thinking they are corsair legs and torso's as your base? Obvisouly a lot of sculpting there on in. Where abouts is the brass rod from?

I've been looking at the dark eldar witches myself and have been thinking of the possibltys of converting them to Witch elfs. Making any rxb troops?

I'm going to be watching this thread with delight, thank you for the inspiration. Keep up the excellent work!

I do really like the look of the champion, Honestly I think we little effort he would make a very nice looking BSB,i do really like how you have these nice stories for every model. I wish I still did that at times, i remember I used to name every character and had fluff ideas for why my army was built the way it was, sadly the new Chaos book pissed me off and I couldn't be bothered anymore.
