    Strange leadership occurrence

I've rarely seen the leadership contests, one happened fairly recently with a friend and his new gang. My own Ratskin gang went quite a long time with 7 members all with leadership 8, including the leader of course.

So last night we played and not only did I have a contest for leadership, but my opponent had a rare occurrence as well. His leader died several games ago and his new leader only had Ld 7 (nominated by xp) so it was bound to happen soon. So one of his gangers gets a Ld increase, and at the same time one of his green juves gets a Ld increase AND impressive scars, taking them both above Ld 7.

Now the rules state that a juve cannot contest for leadership but will immediately do so once they get enough xp to be a ganger. The other ganger fought the current leader and ousted her, the previous leader left the gang in shame.

What happens now once that juve gets to a ganger status? Does she contest or does she not bother anymore since the old leader was ousted?

The juve would contest the new leader once the juve had enough xp.
When you get too big for your britches, it doesn't matter who happens to currently be in charge.

I agree with OP-FOR, as soon as they outrank the current leader in Ld, it seems to me that they'll try to oust them and take control themselves, regardless of who is leading the gang at that moment. If anything, he may see the new leader as an easier target since he hasn't been leading very long.

But the Juve doesn't have higher Ld than the current leader, only the old leader.

I agree with Malo. The Juve would need one more increase to challenge. He just cannot catch a break.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize. In that case, the Juve wouldn't challenge the current leader when he becomes a ganger. Sorry, I overlooked that.

    Re: Strange leadership occurrence

Let me give them some names so I can get my head around this:

    Everybody started at Ld7.

The Ganger (Eric) went to Ld8, challenged the Leader (Mitch) and Eric won, becoming the new leader.

At the same time the Juve (Noel) went to Ld9, but because he's still a juve he couldn't challenge anybody.

I'm going to have to disagree with the above posters and say that according to the Leadership Disputes document, Noel will challenge for leadership as soon as he becomes a ganger, unless Eric reaches Ld9 first.

First line under the heading Leadership Challenges states that

"During a campaign its possible for a ganger to end up with a higher Leadership characteristic than the gang leader."

Judging by the above posts it seems as though there is a misconception that potential new leaders will only challenge at the moment they receive an Ld boost, but the above quote suggests that there will challenge regardless of whether they have just received it or they have been higher Ld for longer.

Note that once defeated a challenger will not challenge again unless they receive another Ld increase that takes them over the current leader's Ld, so Noel will challenge as soon as he becomes a ganger, but if defeated he will never challenge again, since he would need Ld 10, and the maximum Ld he can attain is Ld9.

Not quite correct, Noel went from 6 to 8, at that time above the then current leader (who then was ousted).

Ah, I understand. In that case Noel will not challenge for leadership when he becomes a ganger unless he gains another Ld increase that makes him Ld9 and Eric stays at Ld8 - which is exactly what everyone else has said.
