Maglok's Tomb Kings and DnD minis

Right so first of all I cannot believe I can't think of something better then 'Tomb Kings plog', but at least it covers what is actually inside.

So I have played Orcs and Goblins years and years ago in 5th or 4th edition. I then quit, but recently (a few months) got back into Warhammer Fantasy. A lot of my friends are also catching on, and we are totally getting into it.

So I have picked Tomb Kings as my new army. So far I got myself:
    • A batallion box
    • A screaming skull catapult
    • 2 Tomb swarms
    • 3 boxes of additional skeletons
    • Tomb king on foot
    • Tomb king with great weapon
    • Khalida
    • A tomb scorpion
    • Licht Priest on foot
    • Mounted lich priest

I am a bit reluctant to get some of the more interesting unit choices, like tomb guards and ushabti, because chances are they will become plastic or at least redone when the 'new' Tomb Kings releases sometime next year.

So I am a bit of a lore buff, so first thought was, what color scheme? The armybook comes with two suggestions, so I picked the one I liked best to begin with.

Main colors: Red Gore, Putrid Green and Shining Gold.

Skeletons are to be sun baked, fresh out of the tomb. So Skull White undercoat -> Devlan mud -> Skull White drybrush.

First of all I wanted to paint some archers and my lich priest (on foot). So I got to work on those, I have to say though that I am not a great painter, but I aim to improve.

EDIT: I got a better camera now. Updating these.

    Meet Naeem, lich priest.

[Will reshoot these pictures. Very bad pictures.]
And Naeems guard, a group of 25 archers with full command. (I painted 3 extra archers to get the option to field just 25 archers without command).

[Will reshoot these pictures. Very bad pictures.]

I am also working on skeleton light cavalry in the same color scheme.

My main issue is that the red/green/gold is getting really old, really fast painting wise. So I figure if the red/green is Naeem's colorscheme, then my Tomb Queen, Isis, should have a colorscheme and mabye other characters to.

At the moment I am working up some color tests. The idea is to leave the red to bind the army together, but change the green into purple and mabye the gold into silver. I basically need some ways to diversify the color scheme, without it looking like a tangled mess of colors.

To finish off for now, a shot of a heavy cavalry champion in Naeem's colors.

    Re: Tomb Kings plog

Good start, but you REALLY want to ink wash your models. It will give your models much more depth. So wash the red with red wash, the green with green wash, gold with sepia wash etcetera.

And it is hard to tell from these pics, but did you wash the bones as well? Your Champion seems to look like he has had a wash, but your archers don't. You would be better off diong that as well. Gryphonne Sepia or Devlan Mud are good choices.

I have always been a bit confused about the difference between wash and ink. I use devlan mud excessively on the skeletons. I have also put baal red on the red shields, it just doesn't do as much as I would want.

    Re: Tomb Kings plog

It might be related to the thickness of the regular paint. Washes don't work as well if the paint beneath is too thick. Devlan mud (or a very dark green wash) should have more of an impact on the red, I've heard that baal red doesn't do much.

    Keep up the good work

Nice to see some more TKs out there

Use devlan mud on the shields, it works very well together with red

    Looking forward to seeing more

I have done some tests with devlan mud on red.

First of all I am now using red gore on a base of some brown, instead of white, this gives it a better cover. I also applied devlan mud to some shields, but it just makes it rather dark. Should i consider putting something on top of that? There are really not a lot of grooves on a shield for the wash to seep into.

A friend of mine made some better pictures of what I am working on at the moment.

I have the archers all finished (for TotFP):

[Will reshoot these pictures. Very bad pictures.]

Here is also a better picture of Naeem, the lich priest

[Will reshoot these pictures. Very bad pictures.]

Now I am working on the spearmen skeletons, which I am using purple and red on. I am spending more time on covering the red so it is a 100% cover and not as with the archers. Here is a work in progress:

Finally I have started working on one of my bigger models, a Tomb Scorpion. I figured a Tomb Scorpion is like the mother of all scorpions, so I worked on his base first, and added small scorpions from the old tomb swarm models. More on the Tomb Scorpion later.

Nice, I like it when people do skellie logs, they look so neat in whole regiments.

I was wondering if you have ever thought to use Tyranid Ravenors as Scorpions? If you model them to where their arms are their legs, they would fit the bill.

    Just a thought...

Actually never thought of that. Though I have been looking in other options for Tomb Scorpions. The issue I usually have is that Tomb Scorpions have a dead Lich Priest's remains in it's shell (usually it's back).

    Reaper produces these:

Which are looking totally awesome, but I'd need to somehow work in a lich priest somewhere :P

A friend of mine plays 'Nids, I think I'll check his Ravenors out, never saw that before.

Could you show a Size comparison shot? It looks pretty big. In fact, it looks as big as a Chaos War Mammoth, which would solve your problem easily. All you would have to do is put a Howda on the back, like in Clash of the Titans. Yoiu have a Liche Priest in that, and you're set.

Lol it's nowhere near that big. It's a metal model and is probably a little bigger than the GW tomb scorpion.

It fits on the same base as a tomb scorpion.

There is also this scorpion floating around

He has metal plates where the lich priest would be, perhaps the priest is under that, hmmm. I am sorely tempted to have my second Tomb Scorpion be one of those two models aye.

I have painted one of those in my tomb king project log ( here ), the painted scorpion is posted in this post. It's a really nice model. It add variation when you have several scorpions in your army. Nice log so far, keep up the good work.

    Re: Tomb Kings plog

I tend to field two scorpions whenever I can, love em. I just don't know wheter to hold out for a potential plastic version or not. I mean we are getting a re-release sometime next year.

I have worked on Naeem's cavalry guard. The same red/green/gold colours, but now mounted. In hindsight I kinda wish I had made them have bows and quivers, but I wasn't thinking. So technically they are 'heavy' cavalry, but they get fielded as light.

I have a mounted version of Naeem lined up as well, but not started the paintage.

In other news I am rather dissapointed with the line up of Lich priest options. I played a match where I fielded three (Naeem, Hathor and my High lich priest (lore-wise) Bakari) and the models were so-so. The normal blister is ok, but you only want one of those. There is another one on mail order, mhoa mhoa. And one on the casket.

So I looked around a bit, since I figure Hathor is a female lich priest (hey I am fielding a tomb queen usually, so why not) I think I am going to paint up this reaper miniature as a lich priest.

This one is painted by the Reaper people!

Only the hair worries me, but I could like paint that grey with green 'ewww!' shades.

    Re: Tomb Kings plog

So it's been a while since an update.

Point is, I had a tomb scorpion all painted up and it fell. The Tomb Scorpion model has 8 seperate legs, two claws and the tail. I had to rebuild it entirely. The tail wouldn't stay put without putty work. It was kinda demotivating.

I have also been working on some terrain and had a fairly busy spell to begin with.

I do have the above mentioned lich priestess model in, will be painting her soon. I also got a Reaper mini scorpion, but I don't like how it looks besides my normal tomb scorpion so I don't know if I will use it yet.

Regardless here are some pictures of the tomb scorpion. I still want to do a few highlights here and there, add some detail. Though that is sorta hard on a big scorpion made out of BONE.

I like that banner and the base on the tomb scorpion is real good.

Re: Tomb Kings and DnD minis plog

I have finally got a proper photocam! Still figgling with the details, but now I won't have to get others to make the pictures for the tale.

Anyhow besides warhammer I also paint DnD miniatures (from Reaper) for my DnD campaign (we run dungeonaday.com).

Here are some goblins I have painted recently.
