Re: Maglok's Tomb Kings and DnD minis

Hey thanks man. I like to think I have learned some painting tricks, then again I've learned photo tricks as well.

Maybe I should reshoot the earlier pics in this thread or some such.

Thanks. Time for my army general, the Khalida model, this month. And a casket of souls in progress. Some small DnD scorpions almost done, but rather simple paint job on those. Tried to work with light casting.

Anyhow! I checked out your plog, I like the fantasys tuff, that treeman is awesome. How many layers did you use to get to that wood effect? I have tried from 3 to 10 layers on things and I need to find that sweet spot.

Re: Maglok's Tomb Kings and DnD minis

I've started painting my army general, the tomb queen Isis. She's using the Khalida model and will be done in the purple/red colors of the king's troops.

So far I got working on the cloak and staff. The cloak has about 5 layers of purple, I am not sure if I want to bring it out more, that would borderline like pink. :P

We don't know yet. There are rumours though. Most seem to indicate new cavalary, tomb guards, etc. Also rumours of a sphynx. Can't wait to be honest. Very excited.

The queen has run into some hiccups as the detail on her armor near her neck is being intimidating. My skills in gold seem to not work very well here. Gold always has this tendency to not stick to the model as well as other colors for me.

    >>>Very neatly painted army thus far. I especially like the beginning of your Tomb Queen, the purple cloak looks good already!

@Star.Scream: The rest of her is giving me problems. Layering paint with drybrushing I can do.

Here is a picture of the scorpion family. Two of them are reaper minis, the other two are old tomb swarms (I have a lot of those).

They are supposed to be rather grey-ish and not stand out to much. That said I gave them bright green poison dripping stingers and tried to drybrush some green light on them (from the stingers). It worked ok, but I've done better.

I like your blog so far. I'm doing something similar with my D&D campaign (it's the Dark Sun plog that's kicking around). I read you do Dungeon a Day. What's that like?

Re: Maglok's Tomb Kings and DnD minis

Yup Dungeonaday. I love the concept. It is a huge dungeon and they are detailing level 16 at the moment. Site could be better though.

Fun thing is that from level 3 onward they have articles on reaper mini suggestions.

I plan to physrep every monster. I now own every level 1 monster (+ random encounters) minus an Otyugh and Dretches. I have located a Otyugh model, I just can't seem to find any Dretches. (Ideas?)

Oh and I can physrep level 1 of the dungeon in 3d blocks, most of level 2. Level 3 is cave based though, so not yet there.

    But yes Dungeonaday is cool!

I like your plog, your colors are so vibrant. I read pathfinder. I want to start a third group, but then running some of the pathfinder adventure paths. Whats your opinion? Btw, I am using one of the Pathfinder minis as a lich priestess.

Hey Maglok, great start on the queen! I like that model, and now when I see it in your plog I'm thinkin about to get one by myself :-). And yes, the small details on the TK models are sometimes a nightmare to paint, but on the other hand it's very thankful when you go through it :-). So, keep on! :-)

Re: Maglok's Tomb Kings and DnD minis

I'll have to look that up. I've only planned up through level 8 at the moment, so it'd be nice to get some more ideas. I love the Pathfinder mini you picked for the queen. Look forward to seeing how you paint her up.

I spent a good portion of last night looking for things that'd make good dretches, but it's kind of an odd look. They're basically small demons right? the best I could come up with were Warhammer gnoblars, or Helldorado corvus demons.

Re: Maglok's Tomb Kings and DnD minis

@mercutius: The model is indeed awesome, but the detail is just maddening.

@Brother Muninn: Actually the queen is Khalida, a GW mini. I chose the oracle mini from pathfinder for a lich priest which I plan to paint after the queen.

I have always thought of dretches as this:

The Monstrous Manual shows something like that as well. Gnoblars are a bit to well equipped with gear. Whats a Helldorado corvus demon?

EDIT: Found Hellorado site, no corvus demon though. Also a friend of mine suggested Nurglings, that might actually work. (Dretches are small)

Re: Maglok's Tomb Kings and DnD minis

Ah I have a couple of those minis. I don't think I've ever seen anything metal that fits that description though. Maybe look through discontinued WOTC minis from silver anniversary.

This is the Corvus thing I was mentioning. Looking at it now it'd be too big, and not fit quite right.

Admittedly I was mostly looking for things that looked like small wingless demons rather than fitting the specific mould. Plus I wasn't sure if you were thinking about Dretches from D&D or Pathfinder, oddly, they look quite a bit different.

the one of the left is Pathfinder, looks more like a mix of goblin & orc to me

Good luck, and I'll keep an eye open for something that'd work for you.

Re: Maglok's Tomb Kings and DnD minis

@Brother Munin: Thanks for the suggestions. They do look quite different from pathfinder to 3.5. I think I am going with nurglings. Cause they are little heaps of flesh in the end.

Had some personal setbacks so didn't paint much last month.

I did just manage to finish the kobolds I started a long time ago.

Working on some Tomb King chariots.

I for one can't wait for the new models. I will be getting two sphynx (one necro, one war), 2 boxes of snake guys (one stalkers, one knights) and 3 boxes of new Tomb Guard.

Oo very nice work on your D&D stuff as well! I only ever saw your tomb kings from the Tale.

Have you already got an idea what they do (I mean the stuff you're getting)? I've only ordered the book and will be buying the models slowly so as not to end up doing the crazy and buying too many models like before...

Good lookin' Kobolds. That guy only the left looks far more badass than any kobold should ever be allowed.

Thanks. I do know most of what they will be doing. I have followed the huge thread in rumours. I'll get two sphynx, 2 snake boxes and 3 TG boxes and will be using their bits to make awesome stuff.

I personally can't wait. I have the book and cards ordered, will get rest from Maelstrom.

Ha, yeah he does I guess. Though he has been slain already, in like 1 combat round. And he is really tiny (hence the paintjob being tricky. Hm, I should put down a human for scale or something.

Re: Maglok's Tomb Kings and DnD minis

Alright, been a while. Lots of life stuff getting in the way of painting.

Now though I have gotten my claws on the new armybook! I also bought a quicky box of tomb guard (omg squeel!), while the big load should arrive by mail end of the week. Two sphinxes, two boxes of snakes and 3 more TG boxes.

Unfortunately my magic cards didn't arrive yet.

Here is a quick shot of some new tomb guard assembled! Though the shields are attached to some arms, so some are missing an arm till far in the painting process.

I have also been slaying a lot of empire cannons lately. And I figure... lets have a little fun with a mini diorama filler for in a skeleton unit. Two skeletons will be lifting this cannon thing. I only have slight doubts that a cannon doesn't fit in the mood of the Tomb Kings. Then again it is something left behind by armies that do exist in Warhammer.

Working on the cannon 'diorama'/filler made me dig up my other filler in progress and work on that.

    Here is a WIP:

Skeletons carry to battle the treasures of the Puppet King. The helmets need painting and they will carry shields on their free arms.
