Greenskins and whatever else I feel like(also GD prep)

Hey guys, maybe some of you have seen my other logs around here.
Since I just finished another commission that's actually more of a fantasy mini I thought I might as well open a log for the fantasy stuff here.

So, in the following weeks you might get to see an assortment of my painted greenskins army, various fantasy single minis I've done and am going to do, commissions by clients and my GD project for the german demon.

So, speaking of which, let's start with my feeble attempt of participating in the demon last year - it was more of a small painting contest between a friend, my brother and me just for laughs. Then ambition set in and I finally started to think bigger and aspire to new heights of painting.

So, here's my entries from last year, which never really had a shot at winning(i knew that^^), but still helped me improve my overall painting tremendously:

So, after attending last year's GD i was incredibly frustrated. the overall level of painting was very high and handing in my warrior priest right after the actual winning entry for fantasy single miniature was rough, to say the least.

still, the entire competition was aspiring since it showed me how much you can do with a brush. so a few weeks later i started out again, with the goal of improving my skill.

and this was a first result:


a flagellant i painted pretty quick for my witchhunter mordheim warband.
after that one i switched to some other projects though.

i returned to fantasy miniatures early this year, when a friend handed me a moria goblin and said "you think you can do something with that? so it looks good?" i felt challenged and so off i went with brush in hand.

a few hours later i presented him with this piece:

again, it took some time before i ventured into fantasy minis again - i had a couple of flames of war commissions(you can see some of my FOW minis in my random projects log).

i realized that i never actually finished a privateer press mini although i got a ton of them around my place.
because i like to paint the average joe minis a lot more than all the flashy bling bling characters, i went for a manhunter. this time i set out to improve my basework, figuring that the manhunter's base provided enough space to experiment.

so, now we're basically up to date with minis - the following will be a commission piece i finished this week. it's a mini from freeboter, the imperial noble. in it's standard version it looks quite foppish, with make-up and an arrogant sneer to it.
my client wished for it to have a twirling mustache, none of the armor, a simple cobblestone base and brown eyes. it's because they use it for their RPG group and the mini is going to represent my client's brother. the other group members decided to commission the mini for his birthday.

it was time to brush up my greenstuff skills, sculpt the mustache(so freaking tiny!), cover the breastplate and cod piece(kinda looks well endowed now - oh well... ) and actually make this guy look good.
while i'm aware that the base is kinda bland, i'm still quite pleased with how the mini itself turned out.


as i said, now we're basically up to date. i will try to get some pics of the painted parts of my greenskin army(the troll is part of it and it also shows my painting skill when i got back into the entire hobby about 4-5 years ago and how much it has changed).
i'll also start posting pics of my GD project(s) for this year. i'm going to participate in the LotR section with a Gandalf. I'll also do a 40k single mini(see my 40k imperium log for more info in the upcoming days and weeks) and if there's still enough time, i'll try to do a fantasy single, too. probably an orc i'll put together from all the bitz i got.

hey anardakil, thanks for commenting. i've followed your fantasy log for a couple of years now. loooooved the christmas gobbos, they've been a huge inspiration and influence on my painting. loved how you painted them, part of the reason why i fell in love with the little meanie greenies and all their fun units.

did some painting on my O&Gs tonight. had some unfinished spider riders sitting here, so i decided to finally finish the unit. took pictures of one of the little gits and will take some more tomorrow, as soon as they are all done.

wow, haven't posted in this thread in ages. time for an update then, eh?

so, returned from the german GD and golden demon today. my entry for this year was this little bugger:


first of all, the pictures are crap but i'm tired and always sucked at taking pictures. i rather stick to the painting. so all the graduations and tones look a little off. but whatever. also there's again the problem with too much lighting while taking the pictures, something i never get right.

anyways, i think i'm gonna stop taking part in the golden demon. it's fun to paint a mini to super high standards, sure, but the competition has gotten to a level that i can't compete with. most of them are hardcore painters, who solely paint and don't seem to play all that much. doesn't go for all, but for many. bases with some of the guys have gotten out of hand, at least in my opinion. building inverted pyramids of all kinds of junk on a 20mm base so that you end up with a diorama in whfb or 40k single? please... this used to be about good painters in the hobby, but has become insanely good painters with a pure art focus.
it's all good and fine, since the demon is the 'ard boyz of painting, but ...i dunno, it's too over the top for me. doesn't mean i don't admire the skills shown or the time invested.

gotta wash of the gamer funk that i had to endure today (no air con and a place filled with loads of...rather unkempt gamers, not a good combination) and get back to my standard hobby projects.

p.s.: this gandalf sculpt is quite crappy, btw, poorly sculpted details and at least my mini suffered from a lot of tiny bubbles in the surface which only became apparent while painting the damn thing.

Thanks a lot, guys. I've decided to do some touching up on Gandalf though - the base to be precise. right now it seems too empty and somehow unfinished and drags the whole mini down. same as with the troll...still i am glad that some people seem to like the minis though. Especially Gandalf took a bloody long time to finish. Those greys were a lot harder to pull off then i thought.
