    Re: Modular Island Board WIP

Well I was a little burned out with this project so I have taken a little break. In fact I still need to go back and touch up some of the painting splatter.

In the mean time I thought I would share some WIP palm trees. So far it is just the base and the tree trunks. The thicker ones will have a big 'tuft' of foliage coming out of the top while the skinny ones will have broad leaves. It seems that I keep forgetting to put a miniature in for scale.

Did you guess what they are made of?

Well technically they are expertly chewed up by a team of squirrels. But yes they are the cores of two different types of pine cones.

By no means are they an original idea but it is news to me. The original article and other great realistic terrain can be found here at the Warfactory.

"Unfortunately [his] attempts to recreate the squirrel's efforts using a fresh pine cone and a pair of pliers were not at all successful. You'll just have to look around in the woods for the real thing"

If it's the same size cutting mat that I have on my desk, then you already have a 1" scale provided.
My other one is in cm, and doesn't have numbers on it.

Thanks mate, I hadn't seen this before and these are really great trees. I have been trying some different ways to use various types of pine cones as terrain, and I also use aquarium plants, I just never put them together!

Here are the "finished" results, just needs some painting.

I'm not sure how much of it I should paint, the base of course and maybe give the foliage a rough overbrushing. I will try to leave the trunks alone or leave it at a simple wash and drybrush to blend them in.

I'm still a little burned out on this project but I plan on gathering some more trunks and hopefully whip up all my tree sections in one go. With enough generic terrain The table will undoubtedly see some 40k use.

Time for the obligatory pet picture.

I'm looking at doing an Ork-themed city board at some point. What I thought of doing as a base was getting some cork tiles, reinforce the edges with duct tape and then sticking some textured vinyl tiles like these on top, hopefully they should be ok to spray over and glue extra stuff on, that or just cut into the vinyl layer and use the cork layer to stick stuff on
I don't think that the cork is what you are looking for, or at least not for a base.

The tiles are quite flexible and filled with gaps. I am using a 1/2" MDF base and then mounting the cork on top, ripping up the layers to expose the rough edges inside.

Re: the cork tiles, I see you're also here in BC. I got some a while ago from London Drugs, 12" x 12" as well. I forget how many were in each pack, but there was at least 4 and they were very cheap.

    Cheers.
I have been buying them at michaels but only on sale so they aren't to bad. But I do find that if you can find an item at a non-craft store it is cheaper by far. The big craft stores do have some exclusive items so its worth signing up for the discount.

If it were me, I'd add some beaches using sand, to vary the coastlines a bit, but that's just my opinion. That looks excellent.
As always the answer is, "In the next batch". The reef is a good idea that I haven't thought of, while I do have a tiny section of beach on one tile I could certainly use more.
