Re: Infrequently updated Mutant army project

-fen- hope you get stuff sorted soon, especially with the house move. I don't know if your mobile is compatible but I believe you can upload pics directly to Warseer from your phone (or at least it occasionally points out this feature when I've been on here lurking).

I was made redundant from my previous job, followed shortly by having an emergency appendectomy that left me unable to even look for work for two months. After looking all over the place for employment I finally got the job I have now, which rather conveniently is only a two minute walk from where I live. Been there for over a year and a half now, which is actually how long i was out of work for. The point of all this waffle is that hard times don't last forever, hang in there!

Be great to see your new minis. I suppose on the plus side it means we'll have an update from you of Warseer crashing proportions when you get fixed eh?

    Speaking of updates,

I was rummaging through a tin of old minis from my dusty past this afternoon. I have started a Marine painting log and was looking to get some snaps of badly painted models of the Imperium's finest which I am going to strip.

I dug out these chaps while I was at it:

The two on the left are from Skarlocs's Wood Elf Archers. The other two are Rackhir the Red Archer and Elric from the Eternal Champion line

These three are Battle Lords I think. I used to use the one on the right to represent my PC, "Agravaan", in the Dragon Warriors RPG

An old mounted Warrior of Chaos

And finally, an old Orc with my teenage attempt at some shield design with miliput

Obviously I shall be stripping all of these and giving them new paint jobs. Not much to do with this project but I thought that those of you of an archaeological disposition might be interested.....

And now for pictures which ARE relevant to this blog:

Not sure if I'm going to include the cage or not. Might have a crack at Jonas next weekend.

    Thanks for looking

I really like the paint job on this guy, awesome conversion too. Is it ghoul limbs with a zombie torso? I love the combination of skinny legs with the little paunch above, reminds me a bit of the strange smelly yellow guy from Sin City.

    Keep it up!

    Purplebeard: cheers

Elfboy: ta very much. Yup, Crypt Ghoul limbs, Zombie torso, Flagellant head and key with a touch of the old green stuff.

i realised after posting the pics last night that I had forgotten to give the key a dirty wash. Oops.

Right, back to getting mould lines off Space Marines

Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure it'll be that epic an update, but I certainly have several miniatures to put up when I get back up to the 'age of technology' (as opposed to this steam powered, gear driven laptop I'm using at the moment.)

Until then I'm going to live vicariously through excellent threads like this.

    Malenky_malchick: cheers!

    lilloser2010: my pleasure. Steal away

-fen-: No worries, and thank you too

claudiomarino: thank you very much. I have been trying to improve my painting so that is good to know

Time for some late night uploading. I painted Jonas today. He appears in the introductory adventure "The Oldenhaller Contract" in the back of the WFRP 1st edition rulesbook

"A natural cave weakly illuminated by moonlight filtering in from a concealed entrance. There are two rowing boats pulled up onto the gravelly beach, and a third moored to the jetty near the end of the cart track. In the room are six figures in filthy brown hooded robes, and one is an albino and is surrounded by a dense cloud of bloated flies"

The cultists, led by Jonas Whitespore, are in the process of summoning a Beast of Nurgle. Jonas' stave is described as being carved at one end in the shape of a pointing hand, the other in the shape of a foot.

Although he doesn't appear in The Enemy Within I think Jonas will fit in with the counts-as army. Gives me an excuse to make five cultists to go with him.

    Here he is with Fritz:

Next update ought to be the Mutant Brat. Then I might touch up the other painted up models, sort out the bases, and get some group shots in.

    Thanks for looking

Love the conversion, I have been thinking of getting that necrarch model myself to paint, it has a really strong pose, a lot of character. What you've done with it looks great, love the head you've picked. Painting is lovely too, the muted cloak with the turquoise detail and pallid skin in combination look beautiful together. I really love the transition in colour on the cloak too.
    More please!

mrtn: cheers. He's looking up! I settled with the suggestion of pupils with a dab of shadow grey. Did the same thing with fritz but only worked on one eye I might have another go at it later. I actually thought somebody might comment on his oversized hand

Elfboy: thank you very much! The Necrarch is a great model with a great pose which means it's also great for converting. 10 points if you can list all the parts (I'm sure I've seen a Skaven character model in a similar pose).

No modeling today. Been out in the wet, wind and fog over the hills instead. I think we had summer two weeks ago.

Updates may become a little more "infrequent" over the next few weeks as I need to get some training in for the big 50 miler next month. (Hope the weather gets better)

Re: Infrequently updated Mutant army project

    Danny76: Cheers!

claudiomarino: my pleasure. Thing is, I painted it a bit "intuitively" and so I can't give a step by step as I pretty much added bits as I went. As far as the paints I used, they were all Citadel. My collection goes back some 20+ years (yes, believe it or not some of my paints from the 80's are still actually paint and not solid lumps of plastic).

I started off with a white undercoat. Then I made an off-white mix with Skull White and tiny spots of Tallarn Flesh and Dwarf Flesh. I also added this:

It is called Tintillating Pink and came in the old "Monster Paint Set". When that was dry I made a wash which was only a fraction darker than the base coat using the original mix and added the tiniest touch of Ogryn Flesh. I think I may have added a teeny dab of Shadow Grey too. I also added some of this:

Not sure which one this is. It might be "Swamp Brown" from the old "Creature Paint Set". Though I do not possess it I suspect the present day equivalent could be "Scab Red"?

I went on to add more of the Swamp Brown and Shadow Grey for the darkest areas. I think I actually added some red (this one came free with that Lord of the Rings Miniature Wargaming magazine in '03 )

After that I went on to add Rotting Flesh and more Skull White to the original mix (and whatever else was still wet on my pallet) to highlight.

Sorry it's a bit random. I think that's pretty much how I did it though. Hope that's of use!

I was supposed to be hiking in the Dark Peak tomorrow but that has fallen through. More time to paint!

Of course his name is Jonas.... Like some other deranged lunatic i know, with less beard and better hygien.

Live the skin and dagger and the cloak and.. uhm. I love it all what you have done so far! It will be a good looking fellow when done.

Thanks a lot for that guide on how you got those awesome skincolors. I have tried with different washes but they all were based with ink and as you all probably know that can be a bit hard. Now I'll try something close to your recipe.

    Kaos: Cheers!

Harry: Why, thank you. I'm trying

claudiomarino: Nice one. I think I also used some Bleached Bone too. I look forward to seeing how you get on

    Did a bit more today.

    And a scale shot

I'm not that happy with the creases in the skirt at the back that I sculpted. Practice makes perfect.....

Today I also made a start on redoing the Spawn from a few pages back. I'm using it to work out how to paint a model from the list. If I get time tomorrow I'll start basing and get the results up by the end of the day.

    Thanks for looking,
