Phale's Deathwing :: Strike Force Uriah

    Hey all...

So firstly I'm planning ahead with this one. The krieg plog is growing but I've learnt from it to reserve this first post for indexing. So pics will come in the next post.

Secondly, as was my habit when I first started the hobby I've already bought all my next army while in the middle of my current one. Of course the difference is I've gone and got a low count army (Deathwing) while in the middle of a horde army (DKoK / IG). This is good cause I can take a break from painting the same grey coats and rusty armor and do an entire army that's the same count as 1 guard squad .

Anyway, this one's had a lot more research and planning than the krieg got. Its primarily for gaming and will be a diverse 1500 or 2k army list. The fun build is a 1500 armored co. of 2 TLC squads and 2 LRC. Thats it. Plus Belial. 13 models, no DS and no ranged infantry. Pop smoke straight away and rush rush rush... BLITZKRIEG!!!

Other builds are more conservative, things like DWA a single fire squad to support an LRC chaplin led TLC squad with dreadnought AT support.

I'll leave some editing room here for indexing, but pretty much off we go for some WIP shots.

Thanks for viewing, and hope I'll keep this and the DKoK up to date

Ohh, so the entire army will be magnetised and truescaled with MAS crusader legs. Those things are awesome, but will result in some no turning back hacking at very very beautiful models in terminator armor (i'm looking at you librarian...)

the legs. i love a good pair of long legs

various DA bits acquired cheaply via good friend ebay.

weapons that will all need to be magnetised... i do not look forward to this, but i figure a day solid of just working the magnets in will be worth it in the end... or this could go horribly wrong.

    1st LRC. thank you ebay!!!

and finally some home made tech bases. The 25mm shows how they'll (hopefully) be painted up. actually a lot of fun so far considering I haven't touched an actual terminator.

anyway, thats it for now while i keep working away listening to lecture recordings. love multitask studying. catchas

    edit: using for next update

so heres some more of the bases WIP unpainted...

the dreadnought base. it feel really bland for the context, but i guess for the industrial tech look it could be like the loading bay area... maybe with some pipes and paint it will jazz up

i'll add some more WIP in the next reply

Re: Phale's Deathwing :: Strike Force Uriah

So this will be a bit of a longer reply...

I've really been taken by some of the mural work people do to their DW LR's and banners, and the whole renaisance style of oil and epic battles, to me, fits the theme of a DW army perfectly... after all they're the most epic 1 for 1 infantry available.

I wanted the theme to parallel the biblical recounts of divine interventions and heavenly wars, and again... DW army, angel names, perfect fit. Unfortunately all the awesome names are taken (Belial translates roughly to worthless... while Sammeal is the angel of vengance... comon wtf GW???).

I'll eventually get around to introducing the strike force, but basically i wanted their names and the meanings and stories behind the names to reflect the unit's role in the army and give some fluff to it...

anyway, some wip of AoBR termies being test subjects for the project.

first thin layer of bone over the washed bascoat. the shoulder has been built up more

i think this was around the 3rd layer of bone. As i'm using MAS crusader legs the majority of the model will be red robes, but it's still useful to zero in on the layering method i want.

A final white highlight and sepia washing will be the end, i hope, but atm its still prototyping

I also started figuring out how i'm going to magnetise the arms. I wanted to be cheap and go with magnet bodies pin arms, but they just don't have enough strength for my liking.

I think i'll stick to using the 3mm magnets in both components and maintaining a consistent polarity..

AoBR Termie with magnetic arms in place

Here are magnets. they hold pretty well, and i'm yet to greenstuff detail in the joints to try and get more dynamic poses for the arm (mostly trying to open up the chest so you see the details.

Anyway thats all for now. Back to listening to lectures and painting prototype schemes

Re: Phale's Deathwing :: Strike Force Uriah

Ohh, and i found my doc where i'd done research and planning. heres the names and themes list I'd gotten to. Mind you i wont be filling every slot, its pretty much bible names with some association words

    ---

Strike Force Uriah - (Bathsheba's husband, first to fight, mighty men etc.)

Master of the Deathwing - Belial (Artwork - meaning worthless... not much there, wickedness, there is no peace until the war is won, the fallen are reclaimed, the lion avenged. The angel of darkness, grim reaper)

Terminator Chaplin - Uriel (Artwork - archangel of repentance, guards eden with firey sword, angel of death, light of god)

Terminator Librarian - Gabriel (Artwork - messenger, bringer of suffering)

Terminator Hosts - Michael (Artwork - captain of archangels, leads the army of god, standard bearer? )
Terminator Hosts - Lucifer (Artwork - the fallen one, brightstar, )
Terminator Hosts - Raphael (Artwork - healer, incaserates the fallen, apothecary unit? )
    Terminator Hosts - Zachariel(Artwork - lion of god, )
Terminator Hosts - Raguel (Artwork - enacter of vengance, judgement, watched the other angels)
Terminator Hosts - Selaphiel (Artwork - lion of god, )
Terminator Hosts - Cassiel(Artwork - watcher, watcher of space,
    Terminator Hosts - Remiel(Artwork - thunder of god, ) )
    Terminator Hosts - Zadkiel(Artwork - angel of forgiveness, )

Dreadnought - Elijah (Artwork - didn’t die, taken in chariot of fire)
Dreadnought - Enoch (Artwork - didn’t die, taken up, heavenly)
Dreadnought - Moses (Artwork - taken up after death)
Land Raider Crusader - Absalom (Artwork - david’s son, avenger, rebellious, overthrew father)
Land Raider Crusader - Samson (Artwork - strongest man, fall from grace, wrestled the lion, chained to pillars, destroyer of fortifications, break seiges)

    ---

as a sidenote, i hope this doesn't offend anyone's particular religious beliefs and its not my intention. i just think using the characteristics and character names to draw parallels is a huge part of effective story telling. when you see a LR titled "Samson" and you know the story of samson, you think "ooh noes, this thing must be an absolute crusher"... as oposed to a LR named "Hello Kitty" and painted bright pink with purple polka dots...

Re: Phale's Deathwing :: Strike Force Uriah

Final update before i go sleep... today was a fun day actually.

Got dread magnetised, first long legs termie and AoBR prototype scheme 1 bone armor done...

It's actually depressing seeing how well the sepia wash turns out looking better suited than any amount of layering i could muster, and its about 10 times faster.

I'll be trying another scheme, maybe less bone and more gritty, however i still need to weather the prototype and see how that turns out. Next time.

The 1st termie cam out nice, and i like the pose. MAS have done a teriffic job with the robed legs, and if anyone was on the fence about it and asked me, i'd say hells yes. Provided you don't mind them being a tad taller than normal terminators, and you don't mind converting any GW metals you had planned...

Will try keep this updated, but I have finals approaching this week and all out of material to synergise study

    Cool work on basing, man.
The bone color is just a little too dark for Deathwing for my taste (I'm very old-school minded for Deathwing, and I prefer a white armor with native american feeling...).

And the terminator with Microart crusader legs is very impressive, especially with this pic. My only criticism on it is that the head is too gentle for a marine. But again, it's just my opinion...

    1. I'm liking where your thread is going.
    2. Consider the Idea of the crusader legs officially stolen (if that's cool of course) I would like to do a unit of Deathwing who look like the ones in the back ground of the picture of Azrael in the DA Codex, like an honour guard type thingey, but to run around with Belial...
    3. I'd highly recommend airbrushing Deathwing as the results I've experienced using Bleached bone are beyond question IMHO, check my thread to see!
    4. I shall continue to observe this thread from the shadows with great interest...

Re: Phale's Deathwing :: Strike Force Uriah

@pariah zero: cheers. i just keep experimenting different patterns and materials. there's no real cohesion, but i don't mind. all in prototyping mode for now.

@tancrede: Yeah, i think the bone is a bit dark as well, but I want that "industrialised" feeling over all the bone. Vansam did an awesome job on his deathwing, and while I don't want to flat chat copy him its hard when he takes all teh awesome ideas... but i will try make them feel more "my own"..

and the head is a woodelf head. if it doesn't sit right as i progress the army i'll stop using them; was a cheaper alternative to the DA vet robed heads, and I'm not a sculpter by any means... my GS pile is for filling holes haha

@wulfen: thanks, and feel free to copy away. MAS have done, imo, an awesome job with the legs. I build my initial tone my washing a white undercoat and layer on the bone (although from the looks it may be better and faster to just wash directly over bone and white highlight)... idk, again vansam has an awesome method that, while i don't want to steal, gives the feel i'm after.

I like this project, and to be honest will one day steal the ieda of DW with MAS legs

I also take heart from the fact that I'm not the only one who organises their bits in a nice little segmented tray before commencing a project! Good show sir!

Re: Phale's Deathwing :: Strike Force Uriah

@Rev: haha thanks, i used to just save bits left over in a tub but all the good stuff would sink to the bottom... i had to start 2 tubs for ogre kingdoms stuff that was cool and ogre kingdom arms, pack gnoblars and fists (anyone who's built an ogre fantasy army will know what i mean.... so many arms)

    @Nero Vipus: thanks, i hope i don't disapoint

Anyway a quick update before i sleep... built some more terminators though still waiting on some heads to come before i commit to anything... since my armoured co is literally 12 terminators and 2 LRC's, i may as well pump as much character into each individual...

ok i'm out for now... mighten have anything for a week but christmas break is coming up fast . thanks for the ineterst thus far.

These look superb, the elf head works very well, reduces the physical size of the marine making the terminator armour look all the more imposing!

Re: Phale's Deathwing :: Strike Force Uriah

Not as much an update as a tute on how I've found the quickest, safest way to magnetise arms.

So I use 3mm rare earth magnets for infantry and 6mm for vehicles / dreads / bigger stuff. I've seen some people using 1mm, but i don't know how strong they hold up. Even 3mm struggle to hold the weight of metals i've done. For termies, 3mm is more or less perfect

So to begin, bore your holes with a 3mm drill bit. Once you think you're about the right depth, roll the drill bit around on an angle, otherwise it's going to be a VERY tight fit, and when you glue it will be very messy.

The main thing you want to guarantee is consistency among your army with polarity. If you are unfamiliar with the science of magnets go here.....

So what I first found was working with such small magnets makes controlling polarity difficult. Maybe i'm just simple, but by the end I had a ripper work flow I thought I'd share.

Firstly, I had a prototype template AoBR model, complete with torso magnets and arm magnets. This served as the source for all the other polarities, ie every arm would fit on this prototype and every body would accept the prototype arms...

So that part is straight forward enough. The tricky part is getting the magnets from THAT prototype into the model parts.

At the time I took the photos I was using every model available to speed up the work flow.

So this is a torso with its magnet in it...

..and with the magnet to go in the arm. This is a neat way of figuring your polarity easily and confidently. If its working now, it will work in the arm, unless it gets flipped, in which case your arm wont go near the body (which i did a couple of times due to carelessness)

Now since we have got the polarity setup right, we need to get it on the arm. You could use your fingers, but its small and fiddly. You could glue the arm onto it, but they glue will displace the socket and stick the arm to the body. This isn't catastrophic, but theres a simpler and easier way...

...KNIVES!!! a stanley blade works well for getting under the 2 magnets, and the magnet will even stay on the blade for you.

Now that we have the magnet detached from the torso, we need to know which end to glue down to maintain the polar attraction. But by slipping the knife between the magnets, you know which ends are attracted. its as simple as a drop of glue in the socket, pressing the magnet in while its still on the blade, and sliding the blade away.

Unfortunately, all i could manage was a before-after shot... It shouldn't be too hard to imagine, and in practice it makes sense and is pretty intuitive.

    Before

    After

And its as simple as that! no messy glue spills, no crusty finger tips and no backwards polarity. For magnetising the torsos, do the same thing but using arms instead of a torso.

Hope its helpful if you haven't done any magnetisings and was inetersted.
