Re: Building the Orkmada - BFG Orks

    EDIT: Page 2! Woo hoo!

Many thanks to everyone for your comments! I hope that everyone has had a happy holiday season!

So, as hoped I have managed to get some painting done. Initially, I didn't like how it was coming together at all BUT a little wash and some battle damage and I'm quite pleased with how things are developing now.

***Killa Gargruk leads a band of Bloodaxe mercenaries. Their ships sport red prows and dark green hulls - decorated to emulate the vessels of Imperial battlegroups. Imitating Imperial heraldry is typical Bloodaxe behaviour.

Da BossKillas have taken the Ork practise of adapting space junk into warships to extremes, even converting captured outposts [see additional file 'Ravenork'] and also part of a fuel refinery [filed under 'Gorkdin'] into Ork warships !

Part of the massive Ork exodus from Hivefleet Leviathan, the flotilla was last known to be hiring out its services to local warlords in the Octavius War. Scattered reports of these ships serving the interests of Imperial governors cannot be confirmed.***

I doubt that it shows but I've actually copied an Imperial battlegroup scheme that I came across (the good old dark green hull and red prow that humies SO love). Its actually given me some ideas for fluff so I intend to use the same scheme for the other ships.

Should I paint in some windows? I want to keep the scheme limited but maybe some yello windows might look like a good contrast? Your thoughts most welcome!

Thank you for looking, and again thank you for your kind words.

Thank you very much, fella! I am really pleased that you said that about the distinctive look, I was hoping that the fleet would achieve this effect.

SO, having recently irritated Gomez about progress on projects I felt honour bound to make some efforts of my own. I have painted up the latest kroozer and am pretty darn happy with how things have turned out. The scheme is really simple but its achieving a good tabletop quality - considering most people will only ever see these boyz on a shelf that's all I could wish for!

    Terrorship 'Ravenork'

As you can see I am staying away from painting windows for now, really not sure that these hulks need them? Comments on the painted article very much encouraged, I am really appreciating all the comments I'm getting!
I also have some fluff to go with it, I hammered it out at work today (no, I didn't feel guilty at all).

Pleased, Gargruk glanced around the smoke filled command room. The stench of cordite and burnt flesh was thick in the air and the flames made beautiful little crackling embers around his steel clad boots. He stomped forward over the broken bodies of the human crew and peered at the broken tactical consoles with wrinkled brows.

"Good steal dis, nice big 'ulk eh?" Massive tusks jutted from his lower jaw as he beamed at his bodyguards, who nodded enthustiastically behind their respirators. Gargruk sucked in another lungful of the stench and chuckled.

"Not many gunz on it tho." A bass toned voice rang out on the deck as the Mekboy Baskit Kaze plodded into view, loaded down with twisted pieces of junk he had already gathered during their charge up the corridors of the heavy transport. "And we'ze ain't got the tribute in big gunz we were promised for shipz neither."

"Miserable git!" The warlord snarled, clenching his fists and inadvertently crushing the chair he had been resting them on. "Can't give ya what I ain't got can I?"

The red lenses that were Baskit's eyes tracked across the room towards the warlord and his shoulders slowly hunched up under the equipment rigs he wore. "Mebbe I can put summat else together, drill through to da reactor and squirt some dakka juice out da frunt likez."

The two bodyguards glanced at each other with worried eyes and moved after the departing pair.

    - Ain't flyin' on this zogger... One grunted to himself.

It's my pleasure to share, I hope it helps inspire others to scratchbuild and convert. Glad you like the ships!

Thank you! This may sound sad but I was really chuffed to have someone call one of my ships 'killy'

More than one person has mentioned Roks. Now, initially my plan was not to build any Roks (although I do like the idea behind them, plus for 80pts that's a whole lot of gunz). As things have moved on and a little fluff has evolved around Da BossKillaz I am now inclined to build some - I'll still have lots of bits left over from the chem plant sprues y'see! So watch this space...

Also, I had a brainwave about how to model my Ramships. I am really looking forward to having a crack at an idea Mekboy Baskit Kaze has just come up with...

Does anyone have spare flying bases? I will be needing a bunch of them so thought I'd ask - I want the Orks to match up with my Imperial fleet's basing so the hexagonal bases I have just won't do

Great Ork ships Jihad, that chemical plant was an excellent find.
I think the Ravenork is my favourite so far, I can very much imagine the Orks capturing a space station and sticking engines on it. I'm totally behind you using the Reavers from Serenity as inspiration too, they do have a very Orky appearance (even if the description of them is a little more Dark Eldar).
I like the green and red colour scheme, especially the rusted/damaged sections, it has a very good Orky feel to it.

Also I had to laugh at that bit of background, you have to tell us which one of your ships that refered to now so we can admire Baskit Kaze's plasma redirection abilities

Re: Building the Orkmada - BFG Orks

Dragonlord - Really pleased with your comments, mate, glad the Reaver idea sits well with you. I am hoping to reflect the converted junk idea even better in my next ships - I will tell you which one Bazkit Kaze does 'da speshul job' to!

So I had a productive weekend of cooking, carousing and most importantly building some Ramships! I am happy with where they're at - there is a certain lack of detail that I think I can rectify by painting in the battle damage as previously. This really seems to have helped make the ships look more detailed than they actually are

I've added some brass etching for detailing, a bunch of Dark Eldar spikes (dunno why I started that but they look cool) and used some evil looking screw heads I found as the rams. I have three more to do but I'm thinking about trying for a different style, maybe pincers.

    Thanks for looking!

Please post your vote if you haven't done so, your comments and suggestions are much appreciated

Re: Building the Orkmada - BFG Orks

The warboss cut a terrifying figure as he lumbered out of the assault boat (boat was pushing it really, it was more of a cannon shell with engines). This latest target had made some wonderfully bright colours as it had been blasted by his ships.

He rocked back on his heels and stared up at the rows of pipes and walkways that crisscrossed this compartment. His bodyguards kept their looted bolters at the ready, respirators swivelling back and forth across the scene.

"Wot are dese pipey things then? They torp tubes?" Gargruk did so love his torpedoes, it was one of the flotilla's favourite weapons.

His sidekick Borzok stomped over. He had been trying to fit an Imperial Navy Armsman's helmet over his large head and it now wobbled precariously.

"Dis ain't a humie warship, boss, itza face city." Borzok was hardly what anyone would call a sidekick - he preferred a frontal headbutt to kicking. That or the heavily modified chainsword he was clutching.

"You wot? One of those stoopid things wivout Injuns da pinkies keep putting up in space?"

Borzok nodded slowly, his little red eyes squinting up at the helmet that was determined to vault off to the blackened decking. "Yeah. One of da runts we caught sez dey use it for more boot levver in their ships - dis 'ere is a fuel face city."

Gargruk grunted and turned away, already bored and hungry for combat. "Not anymore it ain't, get da meks workin' on it once dey is finished wiv our repairs. I'ze off ta look for survivors." He stomped off towards one of the hatchways, following the faint rattle of gunfire that came from it. Borzok followed him.

"An' take off your other helmet first, ya stoopid zogger."

Ork Terrorship Gorkdin, identified as the remains of refuelling facility UA - 1600137. The former docking frames can still be discerned, as can the typically oversized torpedo tubes that the Orks have added. Da BossKillaz possess three Terrorship cruisers, which marks them out as one of the more prosperous Ork mercenary bands in the sector. Killa Gargruk is an enthusiastic user of torpedoes in all his engagements, copying Imperial tactics. How facility UA - 1600137 survived a torpedo barrage may be explained by the unpredicatable nature and killpower of Gargruk's 'Grot guided missuls.'

Re: Building the Orkmada - BFG Orks

No love for the kroozer or the fluff? I'm a sad panda

Anyway, thought people might like to see some works in progress - I am trying to use pieces from the chemical plant kit in all the ship designs so they look a little uniform (just a little, we are talking about Orks after all).

PIP on the first squadron of ramships - looking dull n gritty right now but need a drybrush highlight plus all the weathering to make them more detailed. I love the DE spikey bitz I added on these.

The other Ramship unit - I took inspiration for these from some of the Reaver ships in the video on the first page of this log. They have some long vessels with plenty of superstructure exposed so going for that look. Still need the prows and finned wings added. Thoughts?

Final kroozer for the flotilla just now. Added panels to the wings, prow gunz (few more to come there) and some engines. Still needs lots of work - mandibles around the gunz for one. Any suggestions for this ship? I'm thinking of adding a small bridge on that square above the bionicle head. This is going to be a kill kroozer if you haven't guessed - the victim of Baskit Kaze's engine rework

Thoughts and suggestions for these works very much appreciated! I'm hoping that the designs look alright so please comment if you have any ideas!

Thank you! Really pleased you guys like my interpretation of an Ork fleet!

SO I have been slugging it out with my warships in an attempt to get some of my projects done. I have added some highlights to the kroozers and also added some windows after feedback from DakkaDakka - I think they've helped show that these ships are actualy SHIPS and not just some weird Ork vehicle

Killkroozer Killdat and the Terrorship Morkarius - the Killdat is Killa Gargruk's command ship.

Terrorships Gorkdin and Ravenork - I think from these first two shots you can see the subtle changes I've made. I'm really pleased with the combined look.

Da DrillaKillaz - 3 Ramships. Heh heh, just had to add some graffiti to these ships. They are a little more drab than the capital ships for a reason - I don't want them to 'pop' quite as much. It's Gargruk's idea of hiding them during gameplay...

The pictures are a bit washed out - I really need to build myself a proper lightbox. Any comments or criticisms very much appreciated! If you haven't voted for this thread then please do so!

Fluff! Cos the Ramships deserve some!

Gargruk punched and kicked his way towards the stuttering viewer, through the squabbling mass that was his kommand krew. All around him Orks and their Grot servants were either wrestling with controls or running from one repair job to the next.

The Mekboy at the viewing screen was unknown to him. "Where's Kaze?" Gargruk asked suspiciously.

"Fixin' da torp throwas, boss." The Mek's voice was muffled, trapped as he was underneath the broad slab that was the dirty, cracked viewin' telly. A snapped and sparking support stand told its own story.

The screen showed numerous red blobs that came and went as the sensors sputtered away. Humie ships spoiling for a fight!

"Get dem torps ready and tell everyone ta get stuck in ! Full zoggin' speed! An' tell da ramboyz ta stay behind us big 'uns!" The humies were no match for his tactical prowess, he thought smugly.

Dozens of Orks began clammering and bashing their consoles for the requested speed. "Hope dem ramboy gitz don't get carried away, boss." His sidekick Borzok bellowed over the rising din, "Las' thing wez after is one of dem ramming us up our..."

A ramship's blazing afterburners sent it cannoning into the kroozer from behind. The massive impact rocked the ship and all the lights went out.

"Zog me, wotta bunch of gitz." Gargruk thought, even as the gravity failed and he was catapulted towards the ceiling.

I love Serenity, I love Firefly, so as you can well imagine I am loving this log.

I feel like they do need a few details .... rather than windows perhaps a bit if iconography on the sides. Some ships markings.

Love the Drillakillaz ships. Top notch.

Re: Building the Orkmada - BFG Orks

Harry - At some point I'll buy the Firefly series, I really like its style. Its helped me inject some individual style into my fleet, I think.

I agree about the hulls needing icons so I will add those - will use this site to help me personalise glyphs for each capital ship. Guess that'll help me practise my freehand

Also - Imperial ships mount icons on their hulls. Usually an angel or sword/ fist/ eagle. As Da BossKillaz like to emulate Imperial ships they will need icons too, so I'll use Orc shield bosses to develope these.

Glad people like the Ramships - I've built three more to fill some gaps in my fleet list.

I'll be freehanding these prows so they have serpent eyes and graffiti. Next up is two Ravagers to chuck out even more torpedoes.

    Thank you for watching!

Re: Building the Orkmada - BFG Orks

You're welcome! And thank you, glad you like it. Once the weather improves and all the 1000 points are finished I'll post up some group shots - not that happy with the current picture quality.

The Ork Glyph site is definitely going to come in very handy!

Oh, and here's the list I'm thinking about running - it sits at 1010 pts:
    • Terrorship with torpedoes
    • Terrorship with torpedoes
    • Terrorship with torpedoes

    • Killkroozer with extra powerfield plus Warboss with extra re - roll

    • 3 Ramships
    • 3 Ramships
    • 2 Ravagers

Plenty of escorts for its size and a nasty amount of ordinance too. I don't know if I'll ever get a game with them but there's enough variety to make a finished fleet fun to look at.

Re: Building the Orkmada - BFG Orks

    Thanks man!

Just a little something for us today - my second squadron of Ramships. I've reversed the colour scheme for a little variety. Paintscheme was refreshingly quick but effective - they still need some graffiti BUT I'm leaving them for now. Just want to get the bulk of my models painted up.

Have to say I'm much happier with these builds now that they're painted - was a bit sceptical beforehand. I've had an idea about the Ravagers I want to build from these...

Thinking about basing them on this. The vessel, not the kit.
