A Tomb World Awakens to the noise of the Young !

With all the misguided Imperial activity at the Safehouse (see Safehouse gaming log in the battle reports forum), it was only a matter of time before someone inadvertently awoken a Tomb World !

This is my very first log, and will track the growth of the growing threat that is Necrons !

It all started back in May'10 - where I went into GW to buy some green stuff, and while they were closed for stock take, was let in - 1 hour later - left with a shop army of about 5500pts of painted Necrons for £175 (started at £280 ), to which i managed to negotiate with the Mrs as a bargain and an early birthday present (which is in September) ! I had always wanted a Necron force, right back from 3rd edition, and here was one straight out of a box :

    The full purchase

    Close up of models

All in all, after I had a proper search through it all and got it into order, I had purchased :

    1x Lord
    1x Destroyer Lord
    Nightbringer
    Deceiver
    4x Immortals
    4x Pariahs
    120x Warriors
1.5x Wraiths (yes a tail missing)
    15x Destroyers
    36x Scarab Bases
    4x Heavy Destroyers
    2x Tomb Spiders
2x Monoliths (1 bashed up, was being used as scenary)

As you can appreciate Im missing quite a bit of elite, but I have loads of warriors ! After a few games getting to grips with the Necrons, I had decided to just play now again, and not touch them until the rumoured new codex appears........... however............ The Deceiver kept whispering in my ear, promising me power beyond my dreams, and soon my Tau force were sent back home to T'au and the Necrons started to awaken.

And so here begins my log, Im looking to build upon the models I have, adding the more Elite sections, and starting to build my Necron force for Apocalyptic goodness - i spy formations - lovely fun Necron formations - formations designed to make my Imperial opponents worry, and one such opponent has already felt what a 5000pts force of Necrons with just a shed load of warriors and destroyers can do (gotta love 2+ WBB)

I know its boring but I do like proper metal looking Necrons - though I have been using a good technique which you will see with upcoming posts - but since lunch is over, thats it for kicking this log off.

Next....... Wraiths, Flayed ones and Immortals

Nice, I like that someone is doing necrons, they always seemed like a rare army to me. The colour scheme is great, and really embodies the deviousness of necrons. What are you planning on adding? I think something on the lines of an Apoc datasheet would be nice, though I don't know the points system for Necrons, this looks like an Apoc. force If I ever saw one.

Good to see you have a log for your Necrons (I was going to pm you to ask for pics). The force looks great, and it's great that you have already got the max amount of warriors allowed in the FoC as they can be abit boring to paint after a while. I'm looking forward to seeing your additions.

I'm currently close to finishing my first few squads of warriors and will be moving on to some destroyers and monolith, but I'm having trouble deciding on the colour scheme for them (the monolith mainly). Would it be possible to see a rear or side view of one of your destroyers see the detail of the skimer part and also a close up of a monolith as I'm not sure if to carry on with my silver scheme or go with the classic black.

Looking forward to seeing the technique you've chosen to use too. All in all, very excited.

    Re: A Tomb World Awakens

Hey Chris - I will try and get round to some side view pics of the Destroyers, though manically painting 10 Immortals for Sunday tournament - nearly there

Hey Brother Alexos - Oh it certainly will be an Apoc based force - to which as the log progresses I will elude to what my aims are.

    Anyway.........

To add to yesterdays post, I’m trying to add the more Elite side of the Necron force, building up for future Apoc battles and formations. Over the last month or so I have managed to buy from various sources:

5.5x Wraiths (the 0.5 is a tail from a bits website for the top half I got in bulk buy)
    22x Flayed Ones
    10x Immortals
12x Warrior box (to convert into Immortals)
And bits to make a Destroyer Lord based on a Wraith body

As it stands I have painted up 2 Wraiths, got the base colours down on 9 Flayed ones (trying to do dead skin by creating a base colour of codex grey washed with Thraka Green), and about 70% painted the 10 Immortals.

    WRAITHS

The first 2 Wraiths I bought to get me a unit of 3, were my testers for the scheme I wanted to go for, which is an aged tarnished Metal. As stated I like Necrons being Metal - that is how I envisage Necrons. The Technique I decided to use was actually a small WD article a few Issues back, as it just so happened to be perfect for what I wanted and to be honest saved me time to establish my own. I’m not a brilliant painter and so any helpful tips and articles are always welcome.

    The technique is:

    • Undercoat Chaos Black
    • Basecoat Boltgun Metal
    • Wash all over with Gryphon Sepia
    • Wash all over with Ogryn Flesh, emphasis on recesses
    • Wash recesses with Devlin Mud
    • Wash with Thraka Green (though I was more targeted)
    • Highlight with Chainmail
    • Then Detail accordingly

I hope you agree that it has come out well (though first time round so learn alot for next time) - though I am annoyed with myself for not preparing the Wraiths better – a few mold lines and messy middle green stuff .

    Here they are :

Very nice work so far mate, I really like to see some necrons, they need the love!

have you tried using the new washes btw? I helped a friend of mine paint his necrons last year, we used the green/purple washes on his army, they add a really nice texture and touch. I think its worth a try.

    keep up the good work!

souleater - agreed, nothing like a good fettling before getting to it !

alphachicken - thanks for the comments, looking at your logs (which are excellant) its much appreciated) - all washes are the new ones and they are very good!

Wolfen - yes i know - never started a Tau one, but something about the necrons has gripped me !

Hope to finish Immortals tonight ready for the 4TK tourney this Sunday - hope to get a photo of the 1500pts force up - should be fun, and while Toonboy78 expects to do well, im just hoping to test myself with a dated codex

    Re: A Tomb World Awakens

Hello - yes it has been a little while since I have updated, but after a painting splurge before the Clash of Generals Tournament, I have had a rest ! What is more, im currently doing an extension to the house, and its getting quite busy.

    IMMORTALS

Anyway - just thought I'd post a few pics of one of my 10 Immortals (all to the same standard). It is at the pre-highlighted and details stage but I am pleased with the rusty effect - I must be careful when I highlight not to be too heavy handy when i dry brush.

Im currently starting to pull together my other 3 Wraiths as well as completing the 10 Immortals, which considering its highlighting and details I simply need to sit down and get it done.

Also, I want to get back to my Flayed ones as im interested in how I will finish them - I found painting the skin extremely fiddly, as picking it out draped over their bodies was a pain - I will post some pics soon on my progress.

    Re: A Tomb World Awakens

I do dig the scheme on the XV15s, however I think the whites on the broadsides could use a bit of depth. Maybe a wash of some sort and then white over it again?

I'll give you credit, I'm scared of white so I've never even basecoated anything with it!

As for the Necrons, I do like the technique to build up that nice oily look on the models. I suppose 'defaulting' with so many models means you can only add bigger and better things, so the stalker is totally worth it! Looking forward to it being an addition to your mass of 'crons.

    Re: A Tomb World Awakens

It seems appropriate that my original log is called "A Tomb World Awakens" because it woke up, shuffled about for a while and then fell asleep again. Anyway its woken up once more and is going to run alongside my inquisition log to give me some variety, because we all know, its the spice of life !

So just like my Inquisition I have formulated a 2k list to get my Necrons up to speed in the new codex - not uber competitive but I know I could do great things with it and centres round all units have Royal court support with the Canoptek units being independant :

    HQ (640pts)
Destroyer Lord : Warscythe, Res Orb, Sempiternal Weave, Mindshackle (Triarch Praetorians)
Necron Phaeron : Warscyther, Res Orb, Sempiternal Weave, Mindshackle (Immortals : Gauss)
    - Necron Lord : Warscythe, Res Orb, Minshackle (Lychguard)
    - Necron Lord : Warscythe, Res Orb, Minshackle (Immortals : Tesla Carbines)
    - Harbinger of Destruction : Solar Pulse (Necron Warriors)
    - Harbinger of Destruction (Necron Warriors)

    ELITE (425pts)
5x Lychguard : Hyperphase and Dispersion Shields (Necron Lord)
5x Triarch Praetorians : Partical Casters and Void Blades (Destroyer Lord)

    TROOPS (470pts)
10x Immortals : Gauss Blasters (Necron Phaeron, Harbinger of Destruction)
10x Immortals : Tesla Carbines (Necron Lord)
10x Necron Warriors (Harbinger of Destruction)

    FAST (285pts)
3x Canoptek Wraiths (3x Whip Coils)
    5x Canoptek Scarabs
    5x Canoptek Scarabs

    HEAVY (180pts)
    Annihilation Barge
    Annihilation Barge

    TOTAL 2000pts

So since the release of the new codex I have managed to build the following :

Painting scheme is as per the previous scheme already detailed, however, I intend to do the dispersion shields and void blades black with green edging, throw in some gold and Mythril silver detailing on the Lychguard and Praetorians . Annihilation barges will be painted as per the box model.

Ive played a number of games with Necrons using a Retrocron list and proven very effective but I want some of the new toys. Still to build :

    10x Tesla Immortals
    Annihilation Barge
    Necron Lord
    2x Harbingers of Destruction (converting)

Nice to see your Necrons getting some "new toys" love. I started to paint an ark upon release but didn't like how it was going so quit. These should look good in your original scheme, will you be attempting any OSL effects on the new models?

Well if you have an arc going free......

Cheers - I will try and do a small amount of OSL but its an area not tried much . I love the new Necron models so looking forward to painting and my method is reasonably quick but effectice.

    Minor update :
I have now built 10 tesla Immortals and a second Annihilation Barge - however - I have just tweaked my list and now need another 5 Tesla Immortals , 3 Harbingers of Destruction and now only 1 Lord. I have updated my post 12 list

Very soon I shall get airbrushing !

    Re: A Tomb World Awakens

    Minor update :
Firstly updated my log list again on post 12

Last night I got an hour to do some airbrushing and undercoated 10x Tesla Immortals, 5x Lychguard and 5x Praetorians all ready for Wednesday where I will airbrush the boltgun metal on and then spend a couple of hours applying the gold base on the Lychguard and Praetorians then apply the first wash on everything.

The new log list got its first run out 9 days ago (just before I went away) versus Nids - here is a couple of pre-game pics. Had to proxy the harbingers of Destruction and used Pariahs for Lords, but otherwise list was WYSIWYG. Suffice to say my opponent conceded end of turn 4, with me only losing 25% of my army to his.... would be wiped out if Turn 5 and/or 6 had happened. MC's do not like mindshackle scarabs or Warscythes

I will get some WIP pics up end of Weds and then I have another session Saturday.

Need to buy a lychguard/praetorian box set and some Necron Warrior bits to convert my Harbingers of Destruction.

    Re: A Tomb World Awakens

    UPDATE :

Last night I got a good solid 3 hours worth of painting done. Having spent an hour or so last Sunday undercoating I was able to crack on last night and spray the 10 Immortals, 5 Lychguard and 5 Praetorians boltgun metal – which was a bit hit an miss as I did not have as much paint and had to thin it down in 2 paint pots with no measurement – a bit of trial and error. I was then able to crack on and do washes stages 1 (Gryphon Sepia) and 2 (Ogryn Flesh) on the immortals - so a really productive evening.

5x Lychguard and 5x Praetorians with their boltgun metal

Group shot of the Immortals with stage 1 and 2 washes

Close up of an Immortal - even with 2 washes on, Its a nice tarnished metal effect

Rear shot of the above Immortal

This Saturday I will spend about an hour or so doing stage 3 wash, Devlon Mud in the recesses and then stage 4 wash of Thraka Green on the Immortals and I will stop there moving onto the Elites. Still pondering what to do for them as they need to be more clean looking.

    Re: A Tomb World Awakens

    Update :

Here is a couple of shots of my Immortals (taken just now, with bad lighting) with stage 3 wash (Devlon Mud) and stage 4 wash (Thraka Green - it is subtle but adds a nice oily film) applied as well as the eyes and Symbols painted .

All I need to do now is highlights with chainmail silver and then bases, which I do very very simply. I will then probably do some very subtle light shines around the sockets like I did the Wraiths, but will be a last job.

Still struggling on what to do with the Lychguard and Praetorians, so wont worry about them for a little bit.
