I have a worry the DE Hellions might go the way of the drop pod, but anyhow wanting a change from painting shiney clean things and having earnt man points for filling and repairing the wall in the bathroom.

I bring you:

SHOOTA BOYZ

again trying to finish armies off, think I bought these boys at least 2 and probably 3 years ago.
Finally got round to putting them together today.

I'm going for 19boyz and a Nob with 2x BS.
I see from the Ork Taktiks thread that the new school view is just to run these as 20 boys but I think when the 6th ed codex hits based on codex's so far a nob will be compulsory and hell it's on the sprue and it also means GW will get to sell loads of their new nobs/flash gitz boxed set to all those nobless mobs.

Anyhow I digress;
this Nob I painted 3years ago with this mob in mind:


In general I use matt varnish or Orks and IG and gloss on Marines and DE but have used gloss varnish as a spot effect here to make the interior of the mouth look wet.



what sort of Bad Moon Nob goes into battle without a servant to provide him with nibbles mid Waaaaugh

Or How I do my Ork skin:

#1: Orkhide shade (original foundation paint- see yesterday)
#2: layer with snot green (3rd ed paint)
#3: wash with flesh wash- (2nd ed blue top wash; in this picture half are at stage 2 and half at stage 3)

#4: Highlight with scorpion green (currently using last but one version of this)

#5: Wash with Thrakka green, though i have used green ink in the past as well, this wants to be a thin wash to unite all the shades of green but also allow a little of the brown from the flesh wash to show through; photos show half way and all done.


More basecoating being done of other bits.

Nice tutorial on how you do the Ork skin - my friend will like this I think.

Also I loved the army shot of the Salamanders - definetly makes all that hard work worth it to see a nice big fully painted army like this.

You must be getting tired of painting green by now though?

RETROSPECTIVE:
so this is to fill in the rest of the Ork army while I'm painting the remaining models:

This was the unit that started off my 4th Ed Ork force when Phil Kelly's codex was new and shiny. I started and probably finished this unit in late '07 possibly early '08 in fact it's quite possible that the first completed model pre-dates the wife!
( For those thinking that retrospectives are bad form for a plog- this plog has always been about Finishing armies, probably half of the salamanders date from 05-06 and there are models particularly the heavy weapons and some sergeants that date into the 90's- though admittedly a lot of the really old metal figures have been stripped and repainted.- anyhow I digress...again)

Quick update:

12 boyz finished and varnished (apart from the headz) have also assembled 2 old metal big shoots boyz.

So yellow highlighted and weathered:

black highlights shadow grey, blue is regal blue highlighted with thinned mordian blue.

Gaming update:

Played 7th game of 6th Ed today

Salamanders vs 'Nids again

result lost but a much better game than previously.

Sallies:
Vulkan
Librarian
Sternguard in a pod
2x tacticals 1 MM, Flame, combiflamer, other PG/HB
Scout squad (snipers, ML)
2x landspeeder MM, HF

Highlights/ What worked:

Tactical squad 2 camped behind the aegis with the vindicator and a librarian
Hit everything they aimed at and whittled wounds of the hive tyrant beautifully, Hive tyrant was seemingly immune surviving 1 round of nearly the entire army shooting at it and 2 vindicator blasts to the face. this was after the sternguard did a suicide drop that killed the tyrant guard.
Aegis meant that when genestealers eventually assulted in turn 5 tactical marine and librarian cut down 5 of them before they struck! This was my star unit.


Using Rhino and Razorback to make assaulting troops difficult and ptotect Tact squad 2 and vulkan.

Templates especially in combination, Vulkan + flamer + combi-flamer good, 2 landspeeders HF good esp when used in concert.

What went badly-

meltguns/ MM not wounding a thing despite needing 2's for the whole game

discovering the speeders are no longer only hit on 6's in close combat as one dies to massed gaunts

attempting a tank shot on a unit within synapse range- D'oh.

focused fire still not killing the hive tyrant as in walked through the sternguard and the land raider- it eventually died to a overwatched plasmagun in the face- thanks to Tactical squad 2- stars.

Summary:
Anything templately did well
Anything melta did badly
twin linked HB and AC were ok.
Scouts were meh-
Aegis with a pieplate of doom was great.

I needed more plasma to actually cut through 3+ saves as then things died really quickly in retrospect should have use dthe sternguard out on a flank as a distraction where they'd have still been in rapid fire range.

Remaining 4 Shootaboyz inc two big shootaz- in various degrees of prep.


6 boyz mid paint job on the heads- I've used the fantasy Orc heads for a lot of this mob rather than green stuffing.
