Got an update on the river today - as you can see I've painted the "water" with a darker blue shade.

    All four sections laid out:

    Closeup:

For the record I'd like to add that it's not finished yet. I'm thinking of experimenting with lighter and darker blue in some places. And then there's the water effects...

Finally I'll throw in a teaser for my mystery project:

So, what's all this fuss about the mystery terrain piece? Well, as you could guess from the pic in the previous post it's all about a mammoth!

A gargantuan mammoth skeleton to be precise!

I got the idea about adding an animal skeleton from GW's Space Wolves terrain set which had a giant wolf skeleton. So I found this plastic mammoth skeleton on eBay for a reasonable price, and I thought it would fit the theme for my board perfectly.

    Moving along slowly...

I've played around with some water effects on my river sections:

I've had some mixed results with it, but overall I'm happy with the result.

Haha, nice mammoth! The board is shaping up really nicely

Looking forward to see how you do the research station, are you planning on using GW buildings, or something else? However you do it, there should definitely be some cool looking snow research vehicles dotted around it

    Keep up the good work!

I like the mammoth skeleton, adds a bit of warm color to the cool color palette.

I am very impressed by how well you've made visually appealing yet practical terrain and, like others, am a fan of the mammoth skeleton.

I would, however, add a bit of snow to the top of the mammoth (and icecicles if you're feeling adventurous). It seems unlikely that a huge skeleton would be poking out of the snow without any falling or blowing onto it.

    Keep up the good work!

My intention is to build the station from scratch using pink styrofoam. I can add that it is going to be heavily inspired by the the research station that appears in the WH40K 3rd ed rulebook...

Haven't thought of it that way, but you're right - it does add a contrast.

I'm definitely going to add some snow to the skeleton - I just haven't gotten around to it yet! I'll try mixing snow flock with PVA glue and see if I can't get a thicker snow paste to apply.

I can add that I've made a second skeleton-themed terrain piece from the remaining mammoth parts, but this one is more like a heap of scattered bones than a whole skeleton. I'll get a pic up later.

Yay, third edition style! While I love Cities of Death and the Bastion stuff, I do miss the "Ice world, jungle world, desert world" look of the 3rd Ed. Rulebook...

How's this then? An improvement I'd say!

You can find my second skeleton piece behind the mammoth...

Oohhhh do they sell other skeletons, like dinosaurs, perhaps...
Good looking snow by the way.

    Thanks!

There are dinosaur kits in the same series - check this eBay store: Redstar Kits

Cool! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I miss the days when people made terrain rather than buying it, so very much enjoying your log!

Mammoth looks a lot better with the snow on top of it. One thing I've found when doing snow dioramas is that really lightly stippling white gives the impression of a light dusting of snow, and can be used to soften the edge between areas with and without snow, if that makes sense. Might be worth experimenting

I really don't doubt that you Finns have more snow than us!

Nice terrain you've got there Dreff. I like the ice!

I've been a bit slow with the updates, but perhaps I'll make some progress on the research station this week.

Re: Stone Cold - Ice World Terrain

    Hi, got an update today.

Here's some WIP shots of the research station (Guardsman for scale purposes):

I also decided to try and build some fortifications to go with the station:

They will be more like gun emplacements than bunkers (so no roof). I've been inspired by a piece of terrain that could be seen in the GW stuido terrain collection during second edition of 40K. It was like a platform with a parapet and a ramp at the back, and it had earth/dirt coating the sides. I guess some of you old veterans will recognize it when I get some more work done.

I look forward to seeing them, older books are full of great terrain ideas

They are indeed! Back in those days a lot more (if not all...besides the lovely cardboard scenery that is!) terrain was scratch-built, but today you'll mostly see the plastic GW terrain being used in WD and other GW publications. A bit sad I think, since it doesn't inspire you in the same way.

Anyways, I've done some more foamboard cutting (note the two Iron Hands battle-brothers acting as mannequins):

This will be the basic idea for the fortification, but I'll add more detail (and fix a proper ramp at the back - the one in the pic is just a proxy).

hey, i noticed you use a lot of expanded polystyrene. do you have any problems with it and did the textured paint cover its bubblyness (bad word i know) without needing anything else? Also, what type of foam cutter do you use? Great terrain too btw.

I guess you mean the white crumbly polystyrene? Well, I only use it because I couldn't get hold of the pink or blue variant in 1 or 2 cm thickness. The main problem with it is that it, well...tends to crumble. A lot.

But for my purposes in this project it worked rather well. I could never have used it for the ice crystals for example, but for the snow drifts and river banks it was ok. You have to cut it with a foam cutter to avoid it crumbling all over the place though. On the positive side the white polystyrene is dirt cheap!

The textured paint covers the "bubblyness" somewhat, but to be sure I'd use spackling paste or something similar to get a more even surface.

I used this one from Shesto, but I wouldn't recommend it. The wire always broke or came loose, so the 5 spare wires it came supplied with ran out rather quickly. I ended up making my own wire, but it wasn't that great since it burned the batteries out too quickly. So if you are planning on getting one you should look for another brand.
