Talking Messing with the Crusades...my small army

I've wanted to do a crusader WAB army for a long time, so I've been converting away, gradually, trying to get things somewhat ready for painting. I've converted a bunch of Perry Miniatures 1090's Normans to get them a little bit further into the crusades. Not really a fan of some of the other manufacturer's miniatures, these are different story. And of course I like to make things very different than your normal Perry Miniature Normans. I dare to be different.

The Perry's sculpt some beautiful looking miniatures, so I was a little concerned about converting them. Their Hospitallers are nice models, but not quite what I wanted to do for everything. I wanted some sleeveless tunics also. Trying to move these guys a bit further into the 1100s-1200s and get out of the 1090s.

Note the plastic shield is a GW High Elf shield. This is what I came up with after looking at reams of reference materials.

I do not however plan to put caripsons on every horse, just way too much work, but quite a few of them will have them.

Can't wait to start painting these, but I need more.

The final army will be around the 1000 pt mark, hopefully by then Conquest Games will have their plastic foot soldiers out, for my full blown expansion.

Looking great! I'm trying some Perry miniatures as well and want to add the barding on my knights, will be using these as inspiration. So your looking at third crusade then?

Roughly. I'll also be using the Perry Hospitallers. And I'll be doing some similar stuff to the foot soldiers.

Those "crusaders" look very good in my book. Don't forget, once they have spent a bit of time in The Holy Land, those knights very likely would have some "local equipment" added to their and their horses gear.

Re: Messing with the Crusades...my small army

Next batch, this time some actual Perry Holy Order types on my converted horses:

As I'm doing this, the more I'm thinking about paint.

My thoughts at this point is not to paint them exclusively as Holy Order Crusaders. That's why I won't be adding equipment necessarily from the Holy Land. I do like color, so I'm leaning away from doing a bunch of Hospitallers or Templars or Tuetonics or whatever.

    Thoughts.

A large unit of non-religious order knights and their lackies. I like the idea. Will some of those knights have only sewed on crosses to show they follow a crusade?

Re: Messing with the Crusades...my small army

Just looking over the photos here....again. I do hope there will be a update soon.

I am awaiting a shipment from the UK. I received a e-notice it had been turned over to the Royal Post. Sadly, THAT was during the UK's pre-Christmas blizzard(s). THEN the USA got hit with blizzards where all our international airports are. Just hope my order has made to this side of the pond. I know, I know....it will come

Re: Messing with the Crusades...my small army

There will be updates as I'm painting them right now. I also will be doing some foot support two units with spear and crossbows. I would like to get a 1000 pts done for Team play at Adepticon.

I'll probably also do a short blog of some of my Imperial Romans too, I'll definitely playing them at the next Adepticon in the WAB singles event.

When expand this army, it will probably be with the new Conquest Games plastics. The mounted knights are quite nice looking. More on them at some point.

@Harborc: I actually ordered my Perry's from the War Store. There stock is not always the best though.

Re: Messing with the Crusades...my small army

It could be that The Warstore gets it's supply of Perry Miniatures through a USA Distributor of Perry Minies and others from the UK.

It's also possible The Warstore has had a VERY good holiday shopping season. There were a couple of holiday sales at The Warstore too.

By the by, in most states of the USA...the end of Dec and or first week of Jan. most businesses MUST inventory. The taxes on their businesses include taxes on unsold products in stock are taxed. The less on the shelves, the lower the tax total on current inventory.

ALL that said....somebody at the W store likely did not order enough items for the demand for PM minies.

Re: Messing with the Crusades...my small army

Oh I'm sure they do. I order various things from them often, and they often are out of stock, but usually have the best prices.

That being said, I recently picked up a box of Conquest Games Norman Knights, they are very good. The second thousand points are probably going to be in plastic because of this.

Both say they are 28mm. I doubt that either company produces, bulky, oversized minies (like another company), too big weapons, hands, heads or oversized whatever.

Yea there is. In particular with the horses, I'll do some size comparison photos. Conquest Games appear to be 28mm, the Perry's I would say are bit smaller. The horses for Conquest are wider in the body.

    edit: Here's a pic.

    2) Perry Norman
    3)Conquest Games Norman
    4)Gripping Beast Knight
    5)modified Conquest Games Norman
    6)Perry HYW

I also did a short review of the plastic Conquest Games kit on my blog at the following link:

There are more pictures and scale comparisons on my blog at the above link.
