Angelust's Armageddon Thread (IG, BA, GK) (Update 8/22/12- Thunderbolts!)

    Hello one and all!

On this thread you'll see 3 Imperial armies, all of them having some history on Armageddon.

    1) Steel Legion 122nd, Airborne.

    2) Blood Angels (Successor Chapter I call Grave Wardens)

    3) Grey Knights

Theme: Troops in standard Armageddon colors, vehicles in a slightly more straw-yellow theme with granite gray 2nd color. Comes out looking sorta desert camo. Here is some shots on table of one finished Vendetta and ten finished Veterans.

3 kinds of troops to be seen:

    1) Steel Legion metals from the collector's range. Roughly 40-50 of them, 3 HB weapon teams, 5-6 Missile launcher teams. (30ish of them are completed already.

    2) Cadian bodies with Pig Iron gas mask heads. These are generally my veterans. (Roughly 30 of these completed already)

    3) Wargames Factory Shock Troops with Lasgun and stock weapon loadouts. (Almost none based/basecoated/painted). Since I play in a GW store, I'm not going to use these primarily except when I flesh out more troops, though I do like the test minis so far.

    Vehicles:

4 Vendettas - Base coated and dry brushed already. Need detail painting. Also planning on getting FW valkyrie decals, though I have NO experience with decals yet.

2 Valkyries - Same as above

1 Vulture - Needs Punisher cannons added, needs detail painting and decals.

2 Leman Russes - Base coated, passable for table-top but needs details

2 Chimeras - 1 theme color, 1 dark angels green (used as command vehicle). Need detail colors.

3 Hydra Platforms - Base coated, passable for TT, needs details. Guns are more like heavy stubbers, because they're from a Tamiya 1/35 kit ($6 vs. $50 makes me not care as much).

1 Baneblade/Hellhammer - Fully painted, not to Armageddon theme though it does have a gas-masked tank driver. It's painted in tones of blue and gray. (Haven't used it since Apoc was big, so it's gathering dust)

I have a nice DSLR, I will get better pics up in time, especially as I work through. Thanks for anyone who ends up following along.

Edit: Mods, just realized this was in the wrong section. Sorry, could you please transfer to project logs?

    More pics.

Yarrick in first phase of painting. Will probably do some highlights.

Closeups of some of the Pig Iron Veterans.

I'll need some helps with names later...

    Edit:

Added pics of finished Baneblade and picture of different troops side by side.

Left- Wargames Factory w/ Lasgun arms
2nd from left - Cadian w/ Pigiron Head (Vet)
3rd from left - Steel Legion officer
4th from left - Steel Legion Guardsman

Baneblade cannon has some GS on it because of a miscast sprue (GW gave me a brand new Baneblade and let me keep this one though, nice one GW of 2008!)

They look good for the most part, though you should take more care and clean up the mold lines.
You say that I am crazy... You are right!

Yeah, I'm batch painting these bad boys to get things TT quality ASAP. Since the mold lines are hard to spot in regular lighting and regular play, I didn't fuss over them much.

I got some HWTs done, will have pics soon.

Edit: Here they are! 3 Steel Legion Heavy Bolters, 3 Pig Iron Autocannons, 1 Steel Legion Lascannon.

And a Space Hulk terminator for fun

    Re: Angelust's Armageddon WIP Thread

Finished a little more painting on my fliers.

2 Valkyries, 4 Vendettas. Slightly more detail work to be done.

Went a little crazy with weathering powder on my chimeras, because I was curious to their effects. I can still scale back the effect though, since nothing has been sealed.

    Next plans:
Get FW punisher cannons and 2 Valkyrie Transfer sheets. I am going to try and apply the large white wing decals and a couple other smaller decals to my main fliers. Problem is, I've never really worked with decals before, and the wing decals are huge!

Agreed. Yet another bunch of potentially lovely models ruined by them....

The mold line on that plasma Steel Legion model is pretty bad, which I hadn't noticed. The other old lines are very minor and pretty much imperceptible unless held right up to the eye.

I'm not sure I'd call them ruined.

I'll make sure to take a look at my remaining Wargames Factory models though and clean up any lines.

    Re: Angelust's Armageddon WIP Thread

I put the order in for the FW Valkyrie transfer sheet and the punisher cannons.

I heard that the FW transfer is both thinner and has more adhesive than standard GW transfers, which makes the FW a beast to apply. Any advice you guys can give for someone who's not too experienced with transfer work?

Also, I feel like the Valkyries/Vendettas could benefit from another panel/section of red somewhere, possibly on a wing panel. Any ideas? It feels a little dull at this point.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Re: Angelust's Armageddon WIP Thread

Valkyrie/Vulture transfers came in, but the Punisher Cannons were delayed for some reason. Here's my first attempt at applying decals!

And some Storm Troopers that will be part of my Grey Knights, though they'll also moonlight as auxilia to my Steel Legion airborne...

I will need to go out and purchase some matte varnish and go back over it.

I found out that the wing decals are multi-sectional, so I'll have to be very precise in cutting them and take great care in applying them. So far, the simple flat-panel decals were quite easy to work with so far. Wish me luck!

(Edit - I'm already going back to pop that little air bubble...)

Edit 2- I see those mold lines on the heavy bolter...I'll get it with a knife and go back over it for a proper paint job :-)

    Re: Angelust's Armageddon WIP Thread

Alright, finished the transfers on the Vulture. I decided on Eagle head on the cockpit, aquila wings on the wings. Came out pretty good I think. Will post pictures later.

Just a note on the Valkyrie Transfer wings - You need to cut them up into parts, and cut square and rectangular holes in the sheet to place them over small raised plates and parts on the Valkyrie wing. This makes them very prone to tear in parts, as some transfer areas are about a millimeter wide. Fortunately, I was able to just slide the other parts in place and it's imperceptible that there was a tear.

Another difficulty I had was with the Matte spray I used afterward. I painted gloss varnish on the surface first, applied the transfer, painted gloss varnish on it afterward, and then sprayed the transfer with Testors Dullcote to remove the sheen. For some reason, the dullcote bubbled the transfer and I had to firmly press down on the transfer to re-apply it as smoothly as possible. It didn't significantly mar the transfer, but it definitely texturized a smooth application.

    Pics later-

What's up with the modeling for advantage HBs on the Valks?

    Re: Angelust's Armageddon WIP Thread

I bought the Valkyries/Vendettas pre-assembled (Got 3 Vendettas, 2 Valkyries, + like 5 Land Speeders for $175). I wasn't going to argue about the shoddy assembly (lots of excess glue, etc). It was a fixer-upper.

There were no door-gunner bits, so I left the Heavy Bolters as is. I was not modeling for advantage. I honestly don't care for the heavy bolter placement very much. I would prefer standard door-gunners, as it looks much more Vietnam.

    Re: Angelust's Armageddon WIP Thread

You don't seem to have much positive feedback in this thread, so here's some:

Nice work mate Interested to see the valk transfers as I just did wings on mine with masking and a spray gun

    Re: Angelust's Armageddon WIP Thread

Thanks for the encouragement, sarge. Nice feedback is more than welcome! I'd love to see your valkyries.

Heres mine so far...I still need to do a final matte varnish coat on most of the transfers, but the look is basically there.

    Re: Angelust's Armageddon WIP Thread

Next up will probably be my Grey Knight army, getting ready for April.

Currently, I have 20 painted Terminators, 8 painted storm troopers (invalidated maybe?), and about 10 Power Armor Grey Knights in Inquisitorial red (Rumored Purification squad? The Anti-Horde ones).

15 Terminators are already painted in Inquisitorial red (friend painted them). The paint job is okay, but not stellar. May touch them up. These will probably be the rumored Paladin 2W elite terminators if/when I use them.

5 Terminators are in GW metallic studio colors, i.e. boltgun/mithril and gold. These will probably be command terminators.

I did 1 test mini so far that took a bit of time, but it came out quite nice. I used codex grey and a lighter vallejo gray for highlights, and used a scaling gold mixture of bronze to gold to a 50/50 mithril/gold. I'm very pleased with the result, but it took some sweet time to do it at my painting level (not great, kinda slow).

That means on the painting block:

    14 GK Terminators in grey/gold
    7-8 Psycannon GK in grey/gold
15 Power Armor GK in grey/gold
12 storm troopers in Inquisitorial Red (maybe, if they're even included in the codex)
    Hector Rex (on his way)

Pics to come, all advice appreciated.
