Yeah that's a fair point too. It hadn't been bothering me over much when all my figures were based on the same handful of miniatures but it has been a niggling worry since getting the Greatswords. They will certainly be painted with more variety but that may detract from the current models which may look too uniform as a result.

I think one way round it will be to find my starting warband list and define the different groups a bit more.

Alternatively I'll experiment with skin tone and detail on the cloth to break up the similarities. I am going to be using some white on the Greatswords' clothing in order to deal with all the frills without painting a wall of green.

On the other hand I want to get everything painted quickly and uniformly so I have a nice looking warband that I don't mind gaming with since it hasn't taken years to paint (physically, it's been years in the making).

    Glad you like cookie monster

@static grass- thanks! I don't remember the last time I assembled a stock GW miniature. It could be ten years ago now

    So what's new?

I'm playing a game tomorrow. Can you believe it? I'm not sure I can... much sooner than expected I get a game with my newly painted guys
I'm very excited and will try to remember to get some pictures.
Depending on how tired I am in a few minutes I might paint another guy in honour of this rare occasion.

    cheers

    Adam

    p.s. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Ah mordenheim, i loved when town cryer was in WD! I always fancied myself as an undead player or an orc warband.

These guys look excellent and i really love the mix of parts. This log makes me wonder whether its worth buying a few figs and making a mordenheim gang just to get rid of that fantsy itch.

PS: can i have the artillery wheels in your bitz box?

    Re: Hadriel paints Mordheim

    Well that was a blast!

here's my report for the first game of two:

My newly painted guys looked great on the table, as did the warbands of my opponents, both painted by my friend of many years Andrew (peaoui).

Our mutual friend from school Mark was our third and we played two scenarios.

the first game was a Skirmish

I took rather a lot of photos and will embed a couple but here's the link to the album for completeness' sakes.

I was rather pleased that our first game was going to be a straight fight as I was very rusty on the rules and didn't want to have to worry about objectives as well.

We set up in three corners of the table and rolled to see who would be going first. Mark one the dice roll but elect to wait for us. So I went first. I split my warband in two to protect both flanks sending a couple of heroes left and a couple right from my corner. The majority of the missle guys (three marks men and my captain with a brace of duelling pistols were facing off against Andrew's witch hunters and the fighters headed towards Mark)

    Andrew's warband
the table as it was set up
With the first shot of the game one of my Marksmen rolled a six to hit and another to wound at long range having moved against one of Andy's witch hunters. The critical killed him. I was off to a good start!

Mark's warband was secretly orchestrated by Andrew's cat Felix

Andrew reacted by scattering most of his guys into any available cover
The table we used was covered in scatter terrain from Heroquest!

Andrew advanced his cowardly Leader using a meat-shield...

The battle heated up as another Witch hunter opened fire at my Captain and a Champion, my Captain was knocked down.

Meanwhile Mark's horde were advancing down my left flank. I took the decision to move into cover to avoid being charged and to hold my line. This allowed me to get some shots of with my young bloods before being forced into HTH.

Mark's guys were by now getting very close indeed.

At the other side of the table Mark had outflanked Andrew's Warrior priest and a henchman. I was beginning to feel a bet beleaguered as I had been under fire and attack on both sides for four turns or so. I was causing a fair few injuries but couldn't stem the tide for long.

Andrew passed his initiative test and flung himself across a table with his Witch Hunter into combat with my Champion whom he knocked down.

In angry response my, recently recovered, captain dashed the Witch Hunter to the floor.

But he was swiftly felled by Andrew's leader...

I finally lost the right flank against Mark and just couldn't bring any of his guys down with my marksmen. it seemed my early luck had abandoned me.

Mark's warband were victorious as Andrew and I routed in quick succession under weight of heavy casualties and some very high dice rolling.

    the winners:

In post game I lost a warrior and one of my young bloods but made enough gold coins to kit my heroes out with a lucky charm each.

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading this battle report. I'll write one up for the second battle when I have a bit more time! I had a great game and learnt a lot of things.

    thanks for now

    Re: Hadriel paints Mordheim

So my games yesterday really inspired me about this warband. I decided I'd spend some time today painting the next member to reward myself for actually using some of those 'little plastic men' my girlfriend is always complaining about.

The astute amongst you will realise that more time has been spent on this miniature than some of the previous ones. That is because I wanted to make sure he tied in with the other models but looked suitably unique and shiny as he is the first of the guys based on the new Empire goldswords that I have.

The pictures aren't the best quality, no flash or natural light used but hey, here he is:

    and again

    extreme close up

I'm rather chuffed with how he turned out. If you read my second battle report, which I'll probably get around to writing at about midnight after the pub, then you'll find out why this mini was picked out in particular for a paint job!

    Group shot

and a couple of guys I picked up yesterday from Andrew (see battle report), going to convert them up and paint them too. If I'm not careful I'm going to end up with an Empire army....

So comments? criticisms? declarations of love?

    thanks for dropping in

Enjoyable report, getting back into Mordheim soon myself and this helps build my excitement! Your conversions are great, they each have their own character to them. Looking forward to more!

Very nice! I really like the way you paint your metals. Plus the hunting bird looks brilliant! I'll be keeping an eye on this...

well.. thats what im talking about, but imo its still a blob of metal in some parts, maybe paint the skull on the soldiers helmet with a bone colour for example?

that should give you the variation needed for finishing.

    Re: Hadriel paints Mordheim

Sweet. A good battle report - a three-way probably isn't the easiest way back into the game but you certainly seemed to have fun - well-documented but without unneccessary detail. As a representative of this forum I demand more.

The warband is looking great too; you've used some pretty disparate models but tied them in together really well. I think the goldswords will fit in really well with the Blood Bowl conversions. Have you tried any of the non-lineman BB models? The lineman is probably best but it's going to be difficult to keep variation if you add in any more - though actually a simple left-arm transplant or leg repositioning might work wonders.

I've also found that the old monopose halberdiers - while awesome - have scale issues that are particularly focused on the head. With a headswap, though, I've found they look utterly awesome - which I discovered from this post from a while back.

Keep up the good work. Mention to your friend that his Witch Hunters are looking pretty sweet too.

    Re: Hadriel paints Mordheim

    Wahoo! Loads of responses.

@Zujara- I'm glad you enjoyed the report, second instalment coming right up!

@Monsterzonk- Its great to have you here; I love your plog. I was particularly proud of the bird myself. I don't think the initial pictures do it any justice.

@Joeli- I do know what you mean but like to keep my armour uniform. I don't want these guys to appear overly ornate as they are essentially trying to make their fortune in the city of the damned and do not have a huge amount of nice things to begin with!

    @EmperorNorton- Thanks very much

@spetswalshe- The rules were a bit difficult with three of us but luckily Mark is very patient and facilitating. Andrew was also rusty on the rules, we took it slow and had a good laugh with no major disputes. Talking about BB mini variation I do have a couple of the running chaps (blitzers?) in the works. They can be seen undercoated in an early pic in this thread IIRC. Thanks for that link btw its good inspiration for my newly inherited halberdier. I tend to headswap old models to make new use of them (see my DE log ). I think Andrew's Witch Hunters look great too. I'm sure he'll drop in here at some point.

I have just returned to Exeter. Which is nice, I'd forgotten how unnecessarily hot my house is. Shouldn't be sweating in January.

I'm fairly sure I earned myself a speeding ticket on the way down from South Yorkshire which is annoying.

Just for fun here's me franticly analysing the battle

and here's my Captain posing with a Chaos Lord

    cheers

    Game Two: Wyrdstone Collection

Mark rolled for 4 counters which we placed evenly around the central piece of terrain. We swapped deployment ares around and mixed the terrain up a bit and set to it again. I made some clever Wyrdstone counters by ripping up squares of paper, I know, I know, I'm so inventive.

I got the first turn and split my forces between the two nearest counters.

I was only starting with 6 guys so the plan was to grab the objectives and hide whilst the others beat each other up a bit.

Cowardly Andrew took shelter in a tower and behind his favourite bookcase:

Mark and Andrew picked up a Wyrdstone counter each and Mark moved the majority of his frighteningly big (rich bloody Marienburgers and their 5000 henchmen) towards my, now quaking, Captain and Youngblood on my left flank.

My Captain heroically climbed into some ruins to get a nice vantage point in order to shoot the oncoming masses

He was immediately assaulted by four large blokes with sharp axes and killed whilst my poor young blood scarpered with his precious treasure...

Mark and Andrew clashed in the middle (as I had planned it mwahahaha) and my three marksmen continued to take pot shots at both sides from a, relatively, safe distance.
Mark eventually dealt with Andrew, who routed with only two bowmen left in his tower, and proceeded to advance towards me. I had two counters and so did he. The winnner would be whoever could hold on longest without routing. I had already lost my Captain so any more casualties (remember I only started with 6 guys) would have resulted in rout tests. My Champion had sprinted across from the right flank with his Wyrdstone to avoid Andrew's warband and was now perfectly situated to give my retreating youngblood fire support. The pair ran circles around a piece of impassable terrain for a couple of turns.

At this point I was relying on Mark's Leader and two champions with some henchmen NOT killing any of my three marksmen. I had about three turns of shooting at them before I was charged but I didn't hit with a single shot...

I was charged, I thought that was it. Luckily I seemed to only be repeatedly pushed to the ground and not killed! Eventually one of my marksmen stood up for long enough to land a blow on a warrior, killing him and bringing Mark within one casualty of having to roll for a rout.

I made a mistake with my movement that left my Champion out of charge range from any of Mark's four Henchmen on the left flank. My youngblood was exposed, grimly clutching his wyrdstone and with his back against the wall.

Like the true Middenheimer he is I charge him into the nearest henchman. Both attacks hit and I killed the bugger!

I couldn't believe it, I had Mark on the ropes.
His turn came around and he rolled an 11 for his Ld test! I had won. Two wyrdstone counters only one casualty and a heroic final fight!

and so ends the story of why that particular model got a nice paint job from uncle Adam.

I hope you guys enjoyed that as much as I did writing and playing it.

    cheers

    Adam

Nice looking warband - good use of bitz! Mordheim has always been my favourite game, hoping to get in a good few plays of it this year!

Looks like you need to build a bunch more terrain though! Lots of it!

    Re: Hadriel paints Mordheim

I'm back, and I have some tasty painted treats for you:

Marksman, rolled lots of sixes at the beginning of game 1 and was he became a hero in the previous campaign:

I'm very happy with how this turned out- only took the duration of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels to paint him!

I snapped a better pic of my young blood and falconer too:

@Red Scorpion- The terrain was at my mates parents' house during the hols so was a bit sparse. There's lots of lovely stuff at my FLGS specifically for Mordheim
I'm also hoping to play a fair bit this year. Glad you like the minis.
@spetswalshe- thanks again mate, glad to keep your interest; do you like the marksman? I tired some new things with him.

    cheers
