    28mm napoleonics

    Welcome
I just started to gather napoleonic miniatures for Black Powder rules and here are my first models- Polish Vistula Legion made from Perry's French Line Infantry. I still have to paint their backpacks and regimental eagle, but they are nearly finished. So, here they are:

Nice work. How many figs do you need for a reasonable size army for the BP rules?

Have you played the black powder rules yet? I'm not generally interested in minis for the Napoleonic era, but when I heard that Black Powder draws heavily on Warmaster I got much more interested.

Well, number of my army depends from size of my table, and it's enough for warhammer, but quite small for historical games (6x4 ft). Standard batallion in my army is 16 (in rulebook it's about 30), so for whole army it'll be about 100- 120 infantry, 35-40 cavalry (regiments of 8) , 2-3 guns and general's staff. I played once Black Powder and I really like the rules. I don't know how it compares with Warmaster, but the game was quite fast and more depends from your strategy than from dices. I think it's perfect for someone, who begins his adventure with historical wargaming in this period.

Very nice and crisp painting - lovely job so far. I don't know very much about Polish uniforms but wondered if the great coat would have been blue? (figure 2nd left) not that it matters, looks nice with the unit. I do think they look very clean tho - straight from the parade ground these one's!

I have also played Black powder and think it is a very good game if you are just starting with napoleonics. The rules are meant to be very straight forward so you can have big games with a lot of units more easily.

    Like those alot!

Im doing 1813 Prussians for my 28mm Blackpowder army (we already do 1809 and peninsular in 15mm so went for something different for 28mm).

My units are 36 strong each and a nightmare to do!

For AWI we went with units of 16, for the Crimean we are going with 24 per unit and for my Second Afghan War project I have units of 12, so really its up to the individual player what they want.

I like them a lot. They make me nostalgic for old toy soldiers with thecolours you've used but they look way better.
Also, a welcome change from the usual Flames of War stuff that clogs up the historical sections of this site.

Thank You! I also think that there is too much of FoW everywhere. Unfortunatly, in Poland napoleonic wargaming, especialy in 28mm, isn't very popular...

I agree totally. I find that anything not FoW based just get's dropped off the first page by thread after thread of lists and logs on the SS.
I've nothing really against it but when every player has near identical lists and follows the official BF paint schemes to the letter so every army looks pretty much the same so it's hard to get excited looking at yet another king tiger in tri colour camo that looks the same as the last one you saw.

I have a similar problem as you with players of 28mm WWII and ancients but the benefit these days of the number of plastics available is that you can build both sides very cheaply and have two armies and a book as if it was a boxed game. That way you can always get a game.

Nice crisp paint job! I've just started some Napoleonic British, I'm going to do units of 36, I think you've got the right idea using units of 16 though!! I've read the BP rules, really looking forward to a game at some point in the future, just need to get some more painted and find a Napoleonics club in London. You've got a head start on me, I've only painted one model! I'll use your thread to keep me motivated to catch up!

    Re: 28mm napoleonics

Wish I hadn't looked at this! Many moons ago I owned hundreds of front rank Napoleonic miniatures but sold them to fund other projects, I want them back after seeing this!

I agree that Napoleonic wargaming isn't very popular, although who would not want to join in when they see an army all painted up?! They look great, subscribed.

Excellent work on the faces. What's your basing plan for these guys? Are you sticking with the suggested basinng?

    Re: 28mm napoleonics

I think I'll use bases from the box- there will be good enough for me. As you can see, I decided to increase the unit size up to 18 models- they just looks better and it's easier to base them (3 soliders per base).

Excellent work, nice to see the Vistula Legion make an appearance. You should get some lancers in czapkas next!

Great work, you've got them done very swiftly! I really like the stubble you've given some of the men, I may have to borrow that idea!

    Re: 28mm napoleonics

@emperorpenguin Thank you. I want to collect quite large Polish corps for my army, so lancers will be there for sure But english translate for "czapka" sounds weird for me... In Poland "czapka" is just cap, and lancers (as well as infantry of Duchy of Warsaw) wore something called "rogatywka"
@kingofthesquats Thank you, be my guest
