    post apocaliptic tau city

Being new to 40k and the tau i thaught i would throw my self in at the deep end and build a post apocaliptic tau city. I have hunted through google to find insperation for my project but found very little.

The board will be no smaller than 6ft by 6ft. I plan on having a wide range of buildings, from a huge two or three tier temple to landing platforms, towering walkways and statues.

I have drawn a few scetches that i will post tomorow, and more will certainly follow.

I have yet to decide on the materials to use, mainly due to a lack of scratch building terrain knowledge so any suggestions you guys have would be much appreciated. Also any ideas for things to include on the board such as buildings, statues, decapitated space marines would help as im running low on ideas.

I will aim to update daily and post pics of the latest work done toword the city.

I've got some pictures at home of the Tau board from Warhammer World last time I went up. If you want I can post them up for you. I won't be able to do it before thursday though.

    Re: post apocaliptic tau city

ok, so I have decided to incorporate the senate building into the design for my tau temple... the finished design will look very different, but the pics I知 uploading are mealy for reference, and to give you guys a fair idea of what I want to accomplish.

I have also been thinking of materials to make my city out of... I知 thinking either polystyrene or polyfoam... I don稚 know which would be easier to sculpt with, so any advice you have would be great.

also I have decided to make my project all the more interesting by promising myself that everywhere possible will be immensely detailed, for example, I plan on having a crater somewhere on the board that I deep enough that the remnants of a collapsed sewer tunnel are visible, and I plan on having a dead space marine down there clutching at a gate blocking his way to the surface.
no one may see these tiny details when playing on the board, but I値l know they are there

ok, so the following images; three are some quick sketches I made the other night, (a building and two statues) and two are pictures of buildings from starwars.

judging by your sketches im looking forward to this!
as for the materials, i would use polyfoam, not polystyrene (atleast the one i know is made out of little bubbles)
and foamboard to make straight smooth walls/other stuff.

    @ ulruk headsplitter.

Iv seen some decent boards and buildings made from foamboard and i definatly beats having to sculpt everything from miliput as im going to have to do for the statues. . . Is there a website out there that i can order foamboard or polyfoam from? Price isnt realy an issue.

If your thinking of pink foam when you say polyfoam then try B+Q or places like that. When I got some you could check on the B+Q web site for stores that stocked it. Foamboard should be fairly easy to get. I got a A3 sheet from Hobbycraft. Believe it or not it was the only size they had. If your going to be using pink foam with repeating patterns I'll post a link to a template useage guide along with the pics I'm going to poast. As for other materials that might be useful I was thinking of using round plastic guttering and corrogated pipe in the Tau stuff I was thinking of. Will explain more with the pics.

i know in the old tau codex there was a fullpage (background picture to some text) of a tau city.

also, on the games workshop website there used to be a fully modeled tau city, someone might have saved the pic.

    @ imrik dragonlord.
The only picture close to what u discribe i'v ever seen is near the back of the planet strike ?rule book?
Maybe it'd be worth me trying to find an old tau codex? Do you happen to remember what edition it was in?

Thanks for all the encuragement guys @ malorian and lord of end times. Hopefully once i'v drawn up a basic plan of the city, and aquired some matirials (namely the base) then things should start up very quickly.

Great ideas @ fredox, im sure i'd have a better grasp on what you suggested if i wasn't trying to get my head around it at 6am on the way to work. Lol. I look forword to the pictures you upload, infact i can hardly wait. Thanks for everything so far.

On a quick side note, i drew some more scetches last night, one of which i will definatly use on the board. . . (yes it looks that cool.) ill post pics later today after work.

OK first up B+Q Foam Board. I think this is the same stuff I got and you can check local stock levels.

Here's the Hot Wire Foam Cutter Stencil/Tutorial I mentioned.

This is the corrugated pipe I was talking about not sure about suppliers though, sorry.

You can see what looks like a length of it running vertically up the tower in the third picture and between the discs in the fourth photo. The fourth picture also shows a good example of what I was going to use the round guttering for with the wall. It would give you a consistent curve and the detail on the wall could be achieved by cutting out more guttering and sticking it on to the first section.

    Now the good stuff.

    Ditto.

    Will be watching!

I had a look at the fourth picture and it looks like coving. Basically what you stuff into the corner between the ceiling and wall. Dirt cheap from the B&Q resource planets!

    Re: post apocaliptic tau city

Yeh, I have to admit that痴 some awesome tau terrain, defiantly one of the best... but I promise it will be nothing in comparison to my city.

so, I found some foam board hiding in b&q today during my lunch, not nearly as expensive as I thought it would be... hmm.

and the sketch that I did last night.

the one top left is an absolute must have in my city though it will need designing better.
I have just thought, how am i going to do a creator with a sewer pipe in it if the foam that I知 using as the base is only 4 or 5 inches thick?
and, where would one get clear plastic tubes, just large enough to fit a warhammer model in?

@ fredox thanks for posting those pictures and the tutorial, I値l get round to looking at that later tonight.

so, while I知 all excited and brimming with ideas, is there anything you guys would like to see incorporated into my board?
