Thread: Battle For Skull Pass

    Battle For Skull Pass

Hey all, This is a ressurection of an old project I never got round to finishing... with some more time on my hands then before so I've picked up the old brush and have started on this again. I've decided to start a new thread as this is a total overhaul.. a few models have only received a touch up but the rest of the box is going to be totally re-painted.

Here are the first few pieces, am now working on finishing off the vast mahority of the night goblins.. experimenting with batch painting.

The watchwords for this project is Clean and Understated. The theme for both armies is naturalism and a lack of ornamentation. The night goblins are clad in dirty tatty brown robes (always wondered where goblins would get jet black dye from) simple rusted metal for weapons and carved wooden shields. Leaders and higer ranking goblins will have red robes and sigils and patterns daubed sparingly in bright yellow (fungus dye)
The dwarfs are going to appear work-like and functional, simple leather robes and owrn but well kept steel ... with stiffened leather armour and shields. I also want to limit the amount of gold the dwarfs are carrying, limiting to little trinkits and the odd medallion. anyways enough from me here are the pics.

By the way I'm limited to a camera phone at the moment .. hopefully I'll be able to take some better pics on my Housemate's's flashy one when I can sneak into his room

Night goblin command, this is a pretty good indication of what the rest of the rest of the gobbos will look like

Night Goblin Big Boss, the squig is painted to match the other bits of fungus dotted around the army, for example on the banner top

Troll, not much to say though I went for the natural look

Standard rank and file Dwarf... the rest of the army will match this rough scheme

Dwarf Lord, again using the same understated style, The idea is that his equipment is old but practical and well serviced.. most likely been in his family for generations

Crew for the Dwarf Cannon, fairly strightforward and fun experimenting with different techniques for painting natural looking beards

The exception that proves the rule, Slayers have a distinct lack of equipment and is essentiallywearing all of his posessions, so a certain amount of gold seemed appropriate and sets him apart from the main dwarf throng (as does the bright orange beard obviously). Think the axe heads might need some more work though

really nice looking models! haha really great.

I like your red's.... the troll is done very neatly but i'm not sure if it's the picture or the model but his nose seems kinda shiny xD

also, and i know that this is really... i dunno, but it seems like you've given a bald dwarf a blond beard which is kinda weird i thought....

anyway, i noticed that when you said you we''re trying out different techniques on them, they look really good you know.

    keep it up!

Cannon ... I always like to base my war machines so this will be the only adition to the set.. I want to create a 'straight out the box' feel.

again fairly understated with a well used, practical look (I hope) .. the runes are ornamental and so slightly brighter to show they have a practical application.. I imagine a runesmith maintaining these just as much as an engineer would have to maintain the firing mechanism

Cannon with crew and scenery (couldn't resist)

Did some more work on the Slayer, touched up the axe-heads and added a few extra higlights to the skin

comments and criticism's welcome.. I love hearing back from you guys

That cannon is great! I actually have one to be converted as a Warp Lightning Cannon, but its been shoddily painted by its previous owner. I didn't know it could look so sharp.

At first I wasn't crazy about the Dwarf scheme but now I like it- I think it'll look even better once the army gets bigger.
Also, nice job on the verdigris, it looks good.

Very nice - very sharp. Love the albino squig, and the cream & brown color scheme.

Can I inquire into your troll skin recipe?

    Re: Battle For Skull Pass

This all looks great! You have a clean, smooth painting style and I love how you had a vision for the project's "mood" from the start. You're really managing to fit everything into that theme and I can't wait to see how it all looks together.
