    LilLoser's Deathwing

How long does it take to turn this:

    Into this:

All this week I will be re-modeling my Black Templar Army into a Deathwing Force, then paint all the Terminators on the weekend.

    DAY 1

This is what the army currently looks like:

This should resemble something like an army by Friday, and by the end of the weekend a battle hardened Deathwing force.

Thank you for reading, any advise you may wish to impart to a green Deathwing commander would be greatly received.

    Thank you.

It's ironic you mention this, as I've been trying to sell my Terminator army for two years. The metal terminators appear smaller than the newer metal ones, and they come in a limited range of poses, so bringing them up to scratch will be a priority. I've immersed myself in Dark Angel reference pictures, stories and Gothic architecture which I will translate into the miniatures themselves.

Unlike my other projects, speed is key here. I have set myself a schedule of a week to get everything prepared (well, the terminators at any rate - i'm not optimistic about having my landraider stripped and prepared by the weekend). I'm only converting a few characters, leaving Belial to create at my leisure, and painting whatever I have prepared over the weekend.

    DAY 2

Here is what the army looks like today:

I've still yet to name the squads or the sergeants. What kind of names do Deathing members have? Also, what other books, or reference would you recommend I read? So far, all I know about Deathwing is that they paint their armour white to symbolise the passing from one world to the next (becoming ghosts), and that they are named Deathwing because one unit saved a recruiting world from Genestealers. Why do they have a broken blade as their symbol?

It will be nice seeing your skills put to use on my favorite chapter this time. I am however very disappointed that you are not working on your Blood Angels army. That thread is one of the best I have ever seen and I hope you come back to it soon.

I'm looking forwards to this - I love your other works.

Deathwing (and Dark Angels as a whole) tend to have Biblical or Jewish names. I believe there is a thread going around somewhere where someone was naming all the Terminators individually, and in doing some research discovered that 'Belial' was aramaic for 'Worthless' or something along those lines.

Always nice to see more DAs as its now a rather dated codex. I'm also painting Deathwing at the moment, I'd highly recommend airbrushing Bleached Bone as the results are VERY smooth. Looking forward to see how you do!

Good luck matey. I love the deathwing. Currently considering doing an army using the SW codex and the Logan Grimnar/ wolf guard terminators options therein! This is an impressive amount of work to take on.

    Re: LilLoser's Deathwing

I only have time for a quick update now. Thank you to everyone who has replied, I will write responses a little later on tonight.

    Day 3

Time is getting away from me very quickly now. I have started to put the squads together and sort out what weapons go where. Making a decent Deathwing list is a real art. Despite having limited choices, there are a plethora of combinations to be considered.

I've mainly been concentrating on the bases. Because the old terminators were designed for a single 25mm (I think that is correct?) base, they don't dominate the larger bases like the newer plastic ones do. I can use this to my advantage by putting a lot of Blanche-esque craziness on the bases, and building a sense of place. Dark Angels enjoy a rich heritage of fantastic artwork, something which I intend to exploit through the Sergeants.

Think, walking psychopathic Cathedrals; thats the direction i'm heading in.

    Replies!

@Meganutz: Thank you. When can we expect updates on your Black Legion? The Chaos section doesn't feel the same without the children of Abbaddon on the prowl.

@Ephrael - You make me blush, thank you for your praise. The Host is happily entombed in my Display cabinet right now. I still need to finish off my Assault marines, paint the death company, Chaplain, Mephiston and Lucifer - oh and the dreadnought. I hope that I can find time for them in the very near future.

@ Horus Aximand - Ah, thank you. In light of this, I have decided to call the squads: Irad, Lamech, Mathusael and Mahael, commanded by Deathwing Commander Cain (The predecessor of Gideon, who I believe was Belial's senior before he took comand of the order). The names hide a secret for those interested in their origin.

@Wulfen_Kind - Thank you for the tip, unfortunately I don't have an airbrush . Although I have seen a kit in halfords for £20.00 that is tempting me for valentines day; Betsy (my right hand) deserves something special. Does anyone have a review of this airbrush? Secondly, I don't plan on using a single drop of Bleached bone on my Deathwing - more on this tomorrow.

@ Hadriel Caine - Wolfwing? Deathwing wanna-be's...grumble, grumble, grumble. They'd be great to see, and they'd make a nice break from your Dark Eldar.

Yeah. I had a deathwing army for years. The new book killed it for me. As did the atrocious horus heresy DA book... I can pretend that its still the 90s in my head, but it won't win me any games :P

No problem, lilloser2010. I think that's a rather apt choice of names too. Ties the army nicely together if I say so myself :L.

No Bleached Bone? You going for the pre-Genestealer Infestation scheme of black or doing your own take on the traditional Deathwing colours?

    Day 4

I had the day off today, so in between my commission work I'm putting in a double shift.

I've built up the bases, added all the cool fallen masonry and started the green stuff work.

The bits I ordered on the weekend still have not arrived and i'm getting a little skittish as to whether they will arrive by the weekend. I'm waiting for the main colour that I will use on the army and an assault cannon. Worry, worry, worry.

After a little rummaging, I found that I have just enough parts to make a dreadnought. Viva La Bits box.

@ Hardiel - It has been my experience that if you wait with an army long enough, GW eventually makes a decent incarnation. I'm sure you know this all too well with your Dark Eldar. But you are right on the money with the Heresey books; weakest installments in the canon.

@ Horus Aximand - Have you ever seen Winter Dyne's Deathwing commission? Absolutely fantastic work, something which I intend to emulate and copy.

Aye I've seen winterdyne's work. Very nice, and I hope you do well

And I can understand why people dislike Descent of Angels but I found it a rather interesting read. It only became a bit piss-poor once they were actually Astartes. Fallen Angels was a vast improvement.

Fallen Angels was great! Especially the grumpy Dreadnaught that got stuck in his drop pod Angels Of Darkness by Gav Thorpe is a great book for DA players also, it really puts a different perspective on things!
Keep up the pace, The army is looking great so far, although we have VERY different appraoches to our DAs...

    DAY 4 (continued...)

Wow, what a long day. The Deathwing are nearly complete. The odd bit of Green stuff here, a smattering of glue here and they should be ready by Saturday for priming.

Here are the last blurry photo's you'll see of the un-primed army, that only look slightly different from the ones posted above. I will take some cleaner photo's tomorrow (yay more bare metal, bet you can't wait for that), then start my painting marathon Saturday morning. If you like the look of any of these models and you would like to see close up's now is the time to ask.

@ Horus Aximand - Thank you. It's a great army, one that I bookmarked a long time ago.

@ Wulfen_Kind - That is interesting, how does your method differ from mine? I would love to get another perspective before I finish off the army and start painting.

    Re: LilLoser's Deathwing

From a modelling perspective, your guys look more fanatical/dogmatic with the fire and candles etc. and I imagine will look rather brooding in the Pre-Genestealer Black Armour, will they have red DA icons etc.?
I made the decision to stay well clear of such things after reading more about the Lion and the First legion from the HH books, I figured they would head into the howling dark with only the essentials; Weapons, Ammo, Equipment.
That's what I love about the GW, how each hobbyist can interpret things very differently differently!

    DAY 5

Urghhh, all sculpted, all ready to be primed tomorrow. I've been telling myself all week that i'd experiment with a grey primer on this army, but i'm starting to bottle it a bit now. I'm leaning toward dusting, as I am fairly familiar and comfortable with that technique.

Any comments or advise would be nice, but as it stands now, i'm setting my alarm clock for 8 a.m, and starting to dust after i've had my coffee.

Here are cleaner pics of the the models I have been working on. I hope you enjoy them:
