Thread: What's With all the Fish?

    What's With all the Fish?

Was just looking at some of the Mordheim range, and a few of the models seemed a bit fishy... one of the frenzied mob has a fish around his head, and a Witch hunter lackey is carrying one. What gives??

    This might hold some answers.

But more sensibly, fish is just a common theme in Mordheim - the rulebook is full of pictures of them.

Fish are one of the recurring themes in Mordheim, just like the playing cards, checkers, amputation, jester hats, laurels, blindfolds etc...

The surrealist nature of fish in a post-apocalyptic fantasy city is part of the charm of Mordheim.

My take: It's all about John Blanche taking inspiration from the apocalyptic imagery of some of his favorite medieval and renaissance painters. Check out Hieronymus Bosch for example.

If you look at the art in the rulebook, there's a lot more weird symbolism and just plain weird little animals going on. Once that was translated by the sculptors though, I guess it was easier to just use fish as shorthand for "general apocalyptic medieval symbolism".

Ever since the early days, the fish has been a symbol of christianity. Before the comet struck, Mordheim was expecting the second coming of the Empire's savior. I don't know if that's a connection any developer wanted to make, but I've got a soft spot for far fetched theories

I'll throw in my 2 cents. Forgive me if i'm wrong, but this is my understanding: Fish were generally associated with the coptic religion (i think the fish meant either rebirth or prosperity or something like that), which was the precurser to christianity. So my guess is its a nod to that, and a general feeling of 'primitive' superstitions and religions in general.
