Thread: Inquisitor thread for people new to Inquisitor

Re: Inquisitor thread for people new to Inquisitor

As far as I'm concerned you can use whatever warband you like - I only make the suggestion because in my experience, and that of other veterans, is that it makes for a more fun game. Thus the only people who might complain about an all mercenary warband are the other players and GM who might wish for a bit more variety...

Fair enough, but I could go for a mix of bounty hunter, assassin and rouge trader to represent a merc group if a trader is a merc of sorts that is? I'am sure I've heard that rouge traders are sort of mercs somewhere before.

Hmm, thats an interesting idea - after all, mostly we assume that the Trading in Rogue Trader is material objects, grain, precious metals, relics, xenotech, etc, but it could equally be trading in service - military, in your example...

Of course you could - a band led by a Rogue Trader is a much better idea than just a band of mercenaries. It gives you massive scope for a warband - as well as the Rogue Trader and soldiers, you can have a Navigator, Astropath, missionary, AdMech Explorator, savant, officers, crew and other denizens of the ship (which could include all manner of archetypes including ship-board cultists, mutants and scum living below decks).

And, unless you're planning a band led by a make-up salesman, it's Rogue Trader, not rouge trader.

A Band of mercenaries does not need to just be fighter type characters, a band of Mercenaries could easily include a technologist fitted with black market implants to allow him to faster access data systems. The psyker who eerily knows where everyone is the former officio medicae officer etc etc.

for such an outfit id take Firefly/Serenity as my inspiration the crew there all fit within your mercenary idea, Mal would be the leader charismatic leader fairly decent in a fight/zoey the faithful leuitenant good in a fight and dependable/jane your hard as nails gun toting simpleton/Kayleh your engineering specialist/simon your groups doctor/River your psyker/wash your pilot/Book your groups confessor who they tell there sins to for peace of mind

Prefer bounty hunter, freelance assassin and Rogue Trader.

That's fine - are you going to post background and model ideas for your warband?

Don't forget that a Rogue Trader is likely to have a warp-capable ship, and such a thing is going to be big (at least the best part of a kilometre long) and have thousands of crew - plus he'll be transporting his mercenary forces as well. Obviously all these people don't need to be represented on the table, but should at least exist in the background for your character.

Re: Inquisitor thread for people new to Inquisitor

the fun thing about mercs is a mercenary can basically be everything.
I am preparing a merc team for a game I will be hosting (each player a merc versus a bunch of GM controlled security robots), and to add flavour one will be an ex-army soldier (dishonorably discharged), the next will be a criminal, and the last will be a rogue policeman (the leader) who will have to keep the group together.

not only can you play with different backgrounds, but also different specialisations or styles, such as sniper and heavweaps and officer, but also archetypes like "the brains" "the boss" and "the muscle". (I think I just described the same thing twice)

to get back on the topic of people asking questions:
do any of the vets have tips on playing games with few player controlled characters and lots of grunt level guards?

and does anyone have any ideas on robots? (think battle droids)

Have you looked at the rules for NPCs in the Architecture of Hate articles? Even using then I would advise on having no more than half a dozen or so grunts on the table at once (perhaps a few more if the GM is sufficiently experienced and there aren't too many PCs). You can always recycle them as they are killed or can otherwise play no further part in the scenario.

Imperial ones? Or ones belonging to some xenos race? Archeotech? Are you thinking like Star Wars or the Legio Cybernetica?

Re: Inquisitor thread for people new to Inquisitor

I have not looked at architecture of hate, could you post a link on where to find those articles?

I will actually be using battle droid models as battle droids, mostly because thats what I have around, and the people I will be playing have little to no knowledge of the 40k universe, so the game will be set in a generic not-too-distant-future scifi setting. also, as evidenced by the movies they make great die-by-the-dozen grunts.

the only notes I have thought up so far is they'll be carrying lasguns, they'll be unable to take cover, and I will probably use a few control droid "officers" that make the others shoot better as long as theyre still functioning. the major problem I am facing is damage.
I want them to die easily, but not too easily, and I am not sure what effect the fact that theyre not alive will have.

I apologise if you're not, but my first reaction to your post is that you're trolling.

If you're not, then you really need to read up on your 40k background to know why Wyches shouldn't be wearing Terminator armour.

And if you can't tell why one of the most inhumanly skilled archetypes in the 40k universe in the toughest armour going is ridiculously overpowered and unfair in a game where most of the characters are moderately skilled humans with pretty basic weaponry, then I would suggest that Inquisitor really isn't the game for you.

terminator armor machine spirit would kill the wyche, wyche wouldn't be able to get it, wyche wouldn't won't it and wyche would have difficulty killing a scout let alone a terminator who wouldn't be deployed on his own.

If you want something fast and powerful go assassin!

Re: Inquisitor thread for people new to Inquisitor

background for charaters hmmm lets see...

Freelance Assassin: Female, not temple trained self taught, niddle pistol, sword with poison on blade, using enforcer barbaretta turning her hair into Mechadendrites (suits career), covering lower face with bandet face scarf via green sruff, turn a 40k something into a sword, pistol need advice about

Bounty Hunter: Male, was military but became a bounty hunter for some reason so has had years of combat experience both in battles and when hunting, is good at shooting because he was training with rifles in childhood, is very fit paratrooper fit, has a hunting rifle (has range finder scope) pump action shotgun and armoured gauntlets on both hands, has carapace armour all locations and closed helmet with auspexes with both styles of tracking (helmet makes hard to detect and a bounty hunter has to find target)as well as a re-breather and infrascope, 3 frag grenades, special abilities deadeye shot and quick reload cause of the expireance with these fire arms, thinking of using the Adeptus Arbites Judge because bounty hunter hat looks bad and Adeptus Arbites Judge armour looks more carapace like (don't know how I'am going to do helmet) shotgun from enforcer.

Rogue Trader: haven't got a clue but might use bounty hunter model with a green stuffed or other head (hat).

Re: Inquisitor thread for people new to Inquisitor

Well, these are more equipment and skill lists than background - where are they from? What are they looking for? What is their purpose in life? What is their purpose in the battles of the Inquisition? What sort of faith do they have? Do they have families, or are they along in the galaxy? How did they meet? None of this needs much reference to their weapons or abilities.

Wanted to use equipment to define them a bit (e.g. the bounty hunter has to load rounds not clips, this gives me an idea of where he came from to have equipment like this) also I was checking to see if any of that stuff was overpowered for conclave inquisitor because I was deciding on the models to use at the same time.

•Where is your character from? Be specific, not just a planet or a city.

•Does your character have a family? Give details; who are they?

•What does your character look like? Not numbers or clothing but style, looks, et cetera

•How does your character dress? Does their wardrobe contain twenty identical outfits or do they have dress-up/dress-down clothes? Go mad, look in your own wardrobe for ideas.

•Does your character have physical quirks, ticks or habits? Does he sweat profusely when nervous? does he scratch himself in unflattering places or chew his fingernails? has his nose been broken and never set properly?

•Where did your character learn their skills? Where did they first shoot a gun, wield a sword et cetera?

•What else does your character know, stuff that doesn't come into the combats like a passion for Terran Wines for example. Where did he learn it? How did it develop?

•Where did he get his goodies?

•Where does your character live? Again, be specific.

•Who does your character know? Some of these may be warband members, others not. Detail them, do the twenty questions for them if you have time.

•Who are your character's enemies? Does he have any? Or are enemies something that will only come in here? If so, What are your character's primary threat. Tyranids? Eldar? Mutants? Psykers?

•How did your character develop their psychic abilities; a special question, if your character is a wyrd or non-psychic you have one less question to answer.

•What are your character's likes and dislikes? Is he nervous of space travel? Does he hate cabbage? Does he love to drive ground cars at ludicrous speeds?

•What is your character's Moral Code? Where does he draw the line? Where does radicallism or puritanism become Heresy?

•Does your character have goals? Is he a point and shoot weapon for the heirachy or is the vaguest hint of Ork stink going to have him running off to find Orkimedes?

•Does your character have personal beliefs? Does he follow the Imperial creed to the letter? Is he a Thorian et cetera?

•Does your character have any personality quirks? Is he Arrogant? Humble? Laid back? Stressed out? Opinionated? Superstitious? Paranoid?

•How did your character become an <Inquisitor/Rogue Trader/Arbite/Whatever>?

•How does he see his role? Is he a crusading knight? A subtle schemer? A Diplomat?

•Are you happy with that? If not - go back and change things. If you are then congratulations, you're done.

This might take some time to work on.

Hah, don't think you have to do them all - its just a guide. The Bounty Hunter is tough, but not undefeatably so. The assassin sounds just fine, and we see oddly few needle pistols - try using tubing and wire, they are quite simple to look at. Also, they're called magazines, not clips. Marco will probably be along in a bit to yet again explain why, though in brief, a magazine holds bullets so they can be fired, a clip clips them together in the short term to load them into the magazine.

I was wondering about that actually - anyone know what sort of size the smallest warp-capable Imperial vessels are?
