    The Kel'Siral Sept.

Alongside everything else I've been doing I'm trying to paint a 1500 point Tau army over 6 months. Doing it slowly which has led to its own issues over motivation, but also doing it in 250 point chunks each month.

The background is designed to run alongside my Dark Eldar Kabal and Wych cult and to write fluff that has the two sides as antagonists. My first issue had been in getting a Sept name which I've cracked and started on the fluff.

The Kel’siral Sept was formed during the Third Phase expansion. It sits towards the edge of the redefined line after the Space Marine counterattack halted it. Therefore military presence has been kept high to defend the Empire.

The sept use 'monats' more extensively than some other septs, and favour teams of identically equipped battlesuits rather than mixed teams. Currently the Sept has found itself dealing with the issue of raids by Dark Eldar. Following the death of Shas’O Kel’siral Tol’tor Pir’du in one of these raids it fell to Shas’O Kel’siral Shi’va Ti’ran, the one they call Commander Brightstar, to come out of retirement to help lead the defence of the sept. He has taken to wearing his previous battlesuit which has instilled a great deal of pride in the firewarriors under his command.

Set up this way to allow my Commander to use a lovely FW battlesuit and he maybe recruiting some old colleagues along the way.

The plan of attack for the painting schedule is
    Month 1
    Previous month's leftover: 0
    This month's amount: 250
    Total budget: 250

Item 1: Hammerhead - Railgun, smart missile, disruption pod, multi tracker
    Points cost of item 1 = 175

    Item 2: 3 Kroot
    Points cost of item 2 = 21

Item 3: Shas'ui - Missile pod, Fusion blaster, multi tracker
    Points cost of item 3 = 54

    Total spend: 250

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 0
Subtract total cost of all items from Total budget: 1250

    Month 2
    Previous month's leftover: 0
    This month's amount: 246
    Total budget: 496

    Item 1: Shas'ui x 2 - Missile pod, Plasma rifle and multi tracker x 2
    Points cost of item 1 = 124

Item 2: Broadside - smart missile, advanced stabilisation system
    Points cost of item 2 = 80

    Item 3: 6 Kroot
Points cost of item = 42

    Total spend: 246

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 4
Subtract total cost of all items from Total budget 1004

    Month 3
    Previous month's leftover: 4
    This month's amount: 244
    Total budget: 740

Item 1: 6 Pathfinders and Devilfish, disruption pod, multi tracker, targetting array
    Points cost of item 1 = 172

Item 2: Shas'vre - Missile pod, Plasma rifle and multi tracker
    Points cost of item 2 = 72

    Total spend: 244

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 10
Subtract total cost of all items from Total budget 760

    Month 4
    Previous month's leftover: 10
    This month's amount: 236
    Total budget: 976

Item 1: Shas'o - Plasma rifle, missile pod, fusion blaster, hard wired multi tracker, hard wired target lock
    Points cost of item 1 = 129

    Item 2: 10 Firewarriors
    Points cost of item 2 = 100

    Item 3: 1 Kroot
    Points cost of item 3 = 7

    Total spend: 236

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 24
Subtract total cost of all items from Total budget 524

    Month 5
    Previous month's leftover: 24
    This month's amount: 265
    Total budget: 1241

Item 1: Hammerhead - Railgun, smart missile, disruption pod, multi tracker
    Points cost of item 1 = 175

Item 2: Broadside - Smart Missile, advanced stabilisation system, Team Leader w/hard-wired Target Lock
    Points cost of item 2 = 90

    Total spend: 265

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 9
Subtract total cost of all items from Total budget 259

    Month 6
    Previous month's leftover: 9
    This month's amount: 256
    Total budget: 1497

    Item 1: Shas'ui x 3 - Missile pod, Plasma rifle and multi tracker x 3
    Points cost of item 1 = 186

    Item 2: 10 Kroot
    Points cost of item 2 = 70

    Total spend: 256

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 4 - But we're done
Subtract total cost of all items from Total budget 4

The idea is to only have to paint a tank every other month and to figure the scheme out month 1 when there is a little more time. Put a battlesuit at least in each month to try and break them up as well. Firewarriors seem to be the easiest to paint based on the trials so put them in the same month as the army commander to give him a bit more focus.

Which will end up as a list of

Shas'o - Plasma rifle, twinlinked missile pods, hard wired multi tracker, hard wired target lock
    Shas'vre x 2 - Missile pod x2, multi tracker x2, plasma rifle, burst cannon
    Shas'ui x 2 - Plasma rifle x2, multi tracker x2, burst cannon, plasma rifle
    Shas'ui x 2 - Missile pod, plasma rifle, multi tracker x 2
    10 Kroot
    6 Firewarriors
    10 Kroot
6 Pathfinders - Devilfish, rail rifle, disruption pod, multi tracker, targetting array
3 Broadsides - Smart Missile, advanced stabilisation system, Team Leader w/hard-wired Drone controller, 2 shield drones & hard-wired Target Lock
Hammerhead - Railgun, smart missile, disruption pod, multi tracker
Hammerhead - Railgun, smart missile, disruption pod, multi tracker
    Comes to 1496 points.

Gone for functioning force and some of the fun things to paint I've left out hence no vespids or stealthsuits. But what's becoming clear is that especially this month I'm bored and so some fun stuff may get painted alongside this lot.

My test model was this guy

which I followed up painting a battle suit alongside.

    The pair of them together

That was followed up with the first of the Kroot

This batch at least have orange tattoos to match them up with the Sept colours, though I suspect the second unit will have slightly different colours to allow me to differentiate them.

The hammerhead is started and probably one of the reasons I've been having issues getting motivated. I need to figure its markings.

The main thing therefore I've been working on for month 1 is the first hammerhead of the force.

    Daylight shot of the WIP

    Highlight work started.

I'm trying to not dirty up the tau too much, giving them a clinical look rather than mucky. Next work on the hammerhead is lights, windows, and markings.

    Re: The Kel'Siral Sept.

Managed to get daylight shots of the Hammerhead. Glad I moved it off the painting desk for a while as it seems to have gotten paint flicks onto it.

Quite a lot to do. Started on all the windows and lights and then on the nose markings.

may I suggest you trying to get just daylightshots? They pay your minis a lot more justice (yeah I know, it isn't everytime possible, but your work looks imo a way better this way than under your desk's lamp).

I like the coloursceme a lot and I'm looking forward for futher additions and maybe more Fluff potions.

I can try, but it's unlikely to happen as I'm not home all that often when it's sunny

Fluff is coming. Just need to try and get this hammerhead finished this week first.

Managed daylight shots this week and also managed to finish the Hammerhead. Fluff is still an aspiration rather than a reality.

And the 3 Kroot so far.

    The army after month 1

I've started getting the stuff for Month 2 ready and I'll be starting on that next week.

The Kroot look great and I like the hammerhead color scheme. The suit looks very nice in the last shot as well. My only critique would be the thin Sept line on the side of the Hammerhead. It breaks up the flow of the model (everything is 'moving' back). I would either bulk it out or replace it with a central symbol.

    Looking forward to more!

    Re: The Kel'Siral Sept.

BowlingShirtjerk - the sept symbol is probably the one thing I'll go back in the future and change. I'm not happy with how transfers are working for me at the moment and rather than not have anything there I've gone with this whilst I'm doing this 6 month's block. Easily redone at a later point. Thanks for the comments.

Well work and sickness have been kicking my butt this month. I have one sunday left to paint before the deadline this month due to work and other stuff. So trying to focus on getting stuff done.

    Budget for the month

    Month 2
    Previous month's leftover: 0
    This month's amount: 246
    Total budget: 496

    Item 1: Shas'ui x 2 - Missile pod, Plasma rifle and multi tracker x 2
    Points cost of item 1 = 124

Item 2: Broadside - smart missile, advanced stabilisation system
    Points cost of item 2 = 80

    Item 3: 6 Kroot
Points cost of item = 42

    Total spend: 246

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 4
Subtract total cost of all items from Total budget 1004

First issue was I couldn't find the painting guide I'd done for how I do the grey for the Tau. Turns out through a bit of luck it is:

    Prime black
    Basecoat P3 Ironclad Grey
    Wash with badab black
First highlight of watered down Ironclad grey to get the blend going
Then thinner highlight of P3 Bastion Grey
Then fine highlight of Fortress grey on edges.

Battlesuits have had their basic highlights done. Now I'll go through and tidy those up. Metal work is started and the other colours are being blocked in.

Still blocking the broadside, but trying to keep him up with the battlesuits so I can get to the detail work at roughly the same time.

Kroot had their skin work done and I screwed up a little by drybrushing their highlight rather than paint it on carefully. Done a wash and I can always rehighlight if I feel they need it.

Now started work on their hair before I start on the pouches etc.

We'll see if I get finished in time. Not really that confident. One of the benefits of all the travelling I'm doing is that I may get time to work on the fluff for these guys and the Dark Eldar. We shall see. All I can say is thank goodness for bank holidays next month as I'm just as slammed then.

    Re: The Kel'Siral Sept.

Still trying to make my deadline for the Tau this month. Currently sound like I smoke 60 a day and working like a madman. I have sunday to paint and finish stuff this month otherwise I'll miss the deadline. Also depends how exhausted I am from stewarding and marching in London on Saturday.

Ok the two battlesuits have been most worked on.

These were taken about a week ago and show I started adding the colours in for stripes etc to break up the models.

Managed to paint a little on Saturday and got them to this stage. They still need a bit more work to be finished. Primarily the markings on the back of the battlesuit ala

The broadside has also had a bit more work done on it, but still a fair bit to do on the guns. Kroot on the other hand haven't moved along at all yet.

Fluff is being planned. The idea is to write one section for the Tau and then one for the Dark Eldar and see the narrative form between the two. I also have plans for the new Tau armour if I get some from FW and what it will represent, but I'm hoping to start getting fluff written whilst travelling.

    Re: The Kel'Siral Sept.

Well I appeared to have made my 250 point pledge for the month.

First off the model I'm least happy with.

    Then daylight shots.

It's partly the model itself - luckily the other Broadside is a FW one. Partly the lighting effects which I don't think have worked that great and just general eh feeling about him. If I get chance before Thursday I may do some more work on him once I've had a little breather away from working on him.

I'll post other pictures later in the week to see if I get any feedback on him first.

I think your army is coming along very nicely and you have some good colour combinations. Will be watching Must start my own tau again as well!

Much happier with these guys and they go well alongside the other member of their unit.

Kroot who I've also spruced up a bit after the photo to give a bit more depth to some faces.

Hoping to start on more fluff tomorrow with a couple of hours on the train travelling, but we shall see. Want to get some back story to the Shas'vre I'm painting next month if I can.

    Budget post for the month

    Month 3
    Previous month's leftover: 4
    This month's amount: 244
    Total budget: 740

Item 1: 6 Pathfinders and Devilfish, disruption pod, multi tracker, targetting array
    Points cost of item 1 = 172

Item 2: Shas'vre - Missile pod, Plasma rifle and multi tracker
    Points cost of item 2 = 72

    Total spend: 244

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 10
Subtract total cost of all items from Total budget 760

This month will be another bitty month as I have no weekends when I'm not working or away so going to paint as and when I can. Plotted out the first part of the narrative between the Dark Eldar and the Tau and started writing it chronologically so starting with the Dark Eldar.

Right try not to get too excited. Pictures of grey things coming.

All the stuff for this month before I started.

Devilfish for the pathfinders. Figuring how to block the colours on this one and presumably it will be different for a non Pathfinder Devilfish as well even though I don't have one at the moment.

    Pathfinders for said Devilfish.

Drones. Painting the second flying drone in case I want to separate them from the Devilfish.

    Shas’vre Kel’siral T’s’uam Kais started...

Shas’vre with a bit more colour blocked in. Don't say I don't go all the way in these photos. The Shas'vre is Shas’vre Kel’siral T’s’uam Kais who was the bodyguard of the previous Sha'so. Just been planning a fluff segment featuring him.

This is probably how the Tau will sit until maybe Monday. I'm away with work then at Kapow this weekend

Nothing much has been done due to work, but I have a few days to try and get this month's contingent done and bring the army up to half strength.

Daylight photos of where I'm starting from.

Devilfish. Since this shot I've done some work on smoothing the grey which I think is key to getting it to work. I also need to get it to a level where I can start adding markings because it'll start to feel less blank then.
