    The Elysian 13th

I have been a long time supporter of Captain Brown, Alphachicken and Demon-Forge's airborne work. After reading through Captains Browns start to finish log I realized that one of the things that has always held me back from finishing an army is a lack of documentation of my process. Its just like getting in shape: you won't get motivated unless you see before and after shots re-affirming your effort!

So with that in mind (and my new "big-boy-job" paycheck in forgeworld's pocket"), I present to you the Elysian 13th : "the Remnants".

I was inspired by Japanese styling kamikaze colors (somewhat suiting for a rather fluffy and suicidal army I think ). I like the idea of an extremely fragmented army made up of surviving bits and pieces of other companies, it gives a little more lee-way for painting multiple color schemes while still tying the army together. I don't have a solid army list down as I like to play fluff over power gaming but it will be melta and veteran heavy with the support of Sentinals, VALKs, and cavalry (for some reason I love the idea of Elysian rough riders made from the Krieg models and I don't like the idea of any elysian foot soldiers not being very mobile). I have already completed test models for my first melta and demo veterans and am finishing up the interior work of my first valk before I whip out the airbrush for my first flyer ever.

I'll put pics up tonight when I get home.

Ok picture time to prove that I actually have been painting:

Sorry it was a very very very makeshift light box and a crappy camera...

No one ever warns you btw about how depressing it is to see all the imperfections of your mini magnified 10x by a digital camera.

Here are some shots of the cockpit of my valk---I chose a purple color for the pilots because my girlfriend thinks it makes them look cute...

They're elysians not animal crackers damnit!

Here is the valk interior...alot of candy cane caution striping etc...pain in the ass but I think it will blend nicely with a white/light grey exterior....

The entire valk is magnetized...hard to tell but I hid magnets all around...I used some old rhino sprue lights and glued them on the valk ceiling to hide magnets to hold up the back ramp (Disguised as landing/disembarking lights). I'm not completely done with the interior. All I have to do is finish off the final stages of the cockpit and its off to masking and airbrushing

Here is the original test mini...

My original idea was to paint camo fatigues and grey shirts for the entire army with camo green armor...after 3 minis I say "eff that"....I'm going to think up a simpler scheme for the rest of my army...but for now I'll spoil these stupid veterans. This squad will contain 3x meltas and a demo charge as well as some spiffy red armor for the sergeant. They'll all have a little personalzation hopefully. At the rate I paint I often have plenty of distracting converting ideas for a mini before I'm done with it...so....thanks ADD

And the next few additions...nothing too special...10 hours of painting ...2 minis to show for it...I swear to god if I had been nearly as dedicated to real sports (painting is a sport, yes...shutup) I would be super jacked.

Mate, loving the rising sun on the back of the helmets, and the custom carbines are also very neat. Can we get a shot of the completed Valk (when it's done), please?

Nice work so far my friend. THe light box photos are washing the colours ot slightly but I can see where you are going with it.

I concour with you that phtography shows up all those little imperfections that you are completley able to ignore when looking at your own models. I always end up thinking my edge highlighting looks rubbish when reviewing photos of my models!

Is it just me or does that melta gun look almost as big as the trooper carrying it.

    Keep up the good work.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the elysian shotguns so this is just my easy way to represent them. I love the bullpups though. Can't wait to start painting them!

Yep thats why I love the elysian sculpts. They're so in scale. Thats a normal marine sized melta gun but you can see why these guys would need the bi-pods to fire the things.

Very nice work, but I can only notice one mistake with the valkyrie there: the gunner at the back doesn't have a head :P Not sure if you noticed, but its only a minor flaw...

Very nice looking stuff here! The Valk in particular shows great attention to the details on the interior and I like the scheme a lot too.

    Keep up the good work!

You don't see too many Elysian logs here, and I must say that you have done a magnificent job with them. The attention to detail is fantastic, and the camo is just icing on the cake. Well one, I'll be following this log methinks.

Re: Elysian 13th "The Remnants" Painting Log

    Hey all,

No major weekend updates to really show despite alot of modeling time...

finished the valk assembly and it has been primed, basecoated and blacklined...putting on the hairspray tomorrow (for the weathering process) so I'll get pics up before the final painting begins.

Vast majority of my time this weekend:

Avoiding cockpit glass fogups during assembly and painting: 3 hours
Assembling and magnetizing model with crappy old superglue: 3 hours
Creating more advanced looking landing gear (the stuff included wasnt detailed enough): 2 hours
    Blacklining and basecoating: 2 hours
Airbrush breaking and temper tantrum that followed: the rest of the time in between the above

Stay tuned for pictures and painting process

Re: Elysian 13th "The Remnants" Painting Log

Ok so a little progress but still a long way to go...

Sorry not the best pictures I was a little lazy.

I undercoated with a light metallic followed by hardcoat and hairspray.

I then sprayed val. wolf gray followed by panel lines that were preshaded with codex grey. I then game successive coated of watered down white (progressively darkening toward the center of the panels). The final effect is a slight blue-ish white, although I'm not sure if it shows up in the pictures...

I must admit I got a little ahead of myself and tried weathering (its is my first time using the hairspray technique so I'm a little eager-seems to be working very well)

What I have left to do:

-Apply red rising suns and panel lines
    -Finish weathering the basecoated hairspray
    -Future Floor wax coat
    -Decals!!!! (my favorite)
-Oil Wash panel lines and oil weathering
    -Landing gear
    -Engines
    -Details
    -Final weathering/Smoke marks
    -Base
    -Flat coat
    DONE!

    Daunting list

Those are some very impressive models. I wasn't too keen at first, but the interior detail of the Valkyrie and the little extra details (like the disembarkation lights) have made these grow on me - I really like them.

Would you mind sharing how you did the camouflage on your Veterans (the trousers)? It's absolutely awesome, I've been trying to create a similar scheme for a while now and failing utterly.

Re: Elysian 13th "The Remnants" Painting Log

    Thanks treadhead!

I will do a step-by-step on my infantry men as soon as I get through this stupid valkyrie.

Basically its all a special mix of val. paints.

    But:
    1: Basecoat greenish grey
2: Apply kahki pattern (larger coverage for spots/make sure paint is really thin/multiple coats needs/pay attention to folds in fabric and try to follow them to let them stand out)
3: Apply charred brown small patterns to connect the khacki patterns
    4. Pin wash the edges of pockets and lether straps with *Heavily* thinned brown (should take multiple coats to see first depth start to appear) to add depth
    5. paint armor, lether straps, boots yadda yadda yadda yadda

My first test mini took FOREVER and multiple paint strips until I was happy with him...I promise you it seems to be getting faster the more you paint the camo and it looks nice in person (my pictures wash it out a little sorry...)

My next four minis I'm going to do in assembly line fashion to see if I crank out the squad by the end of February

Awesome painting and colour scheme. WW2 Japanese inspired Guard is something you don't see very often, and seeing this I can't for my life understand why! Looking forward to seeing this grow.

    Cheers,
