BBTramp and Sork21's joint Astartes Thread

Hi guys here's a joint thread of our space marine miniatures.

I Started collecting 40k back in 1999 (which were 3rd addition rules back then me thinks) and have loved the Warhammer universe ever since, I'm a massive space wolf fan and read alot of the novels including the Horus Heresy which I am also a massive fan of...

I'm thinking about getting back into painting and finishing off some bits and bobs that I never finished. I have four 40k armies: Ultramarines (where I started) , Space wolves, White Panthers and Cadian Imperial Guard.

In this thread I'm going to be posting some shots from the above and new advances made (if any )

Sork, I think that the next marine Biker should have a little less mud on him, it distracts from the model. I like the colours, though, and can't wait to see more.

That's an amazing looking biker! I don't think the mud detracts from the model, I think it makes it.

You may remember the space marine captain from my failed army project The Guardians of the Covenant. I butchered him and turned him into a plasma gunner, in order for me to make a captain from sanguinary guard bits.

I liked the old captain you made, but the plasma gunner is cool. Cant wait to see what your new one will look like as the plan for it is awesome!! also nice job on the biker skull

I love both of your colour schemes, they have the potential to be made into great looking armies. The Panther's work really nicely with the small amout of yellow setting off the whites and blacks. I would, however, advise against introducing too many contrasting details (like the green tabard) as it takes away from how well the yellow works with the black/white. The red chest eagle on the apothecary looks good, the greens and blues I would skip and use neutral colours like linen, leather brown and metals instead.

The Knights Sanguine have everything a BA successor should typically have - red and black, and the colour balance is nice and not too usual. I like the scratches on the biker model, black lends itself to some light weathering.

Other than that, I think you might both look into thinning your paints a little more and painting several thin layers instead of few thick ones. This concerns the Panthers more than the Knights as it's very well visible on the white and yellow parts.
Sork, on your plasma gunner, this might only be the case because you repainted him. The biker looks just fine, if a little muddy.

BB, have you tried using Foundation paints or just lighter mid-tones under your whites and yellows to improve the main colour's coverage? I.e. use Astronomican Grey under white to make it cover smoother and Iyanden Darksun under the yellow.

I think that you're doing well now, and that with some improvements in basic technique and materials used (i.e. choice of paints, thinning, proper shading and highlighting) you can achieve great results in no time.

BB first off i'd water down your paints some, experiment with different consistancies, the white on most of my marines is around 7-8 thin coats, i think to get the most out of your models you should really take advantage of the Citadel washes, some gryphonne Sepia would do wonders for your yellow it would also unify the shading on the bluw somewhat

Re: BBTramp and Sork21's joint Astartes Thread

Hey guys thanks very much for the tips and advice as they are VERY welcome!!

The marines I've posted so far are ones painted millenia ago when i was a lot younger and not as experienced as I am now lol, also foundation paints wern't around then so i'll be sure to get some! the inks idea is great too, I went into my Local GW today after many years as I was curious and found that these techniques you've suggested are very much the way forward.

I'm gonna post some more images of my older mini's and then post my most recent ones, hopefully you'll see in my newer models the paint is much smoother and refined.

    Thanks again for the C&C!!

Re: BBTramp and Sork21's joint Astartes Thread

Some fluff: The Knights Sanguine are a Blood Angels successor chapter, formed after the massacre on Pyrax II, where the Blood Angels suffered heavy losses fighting off a Daemon incursion. The Knights Sanguine are often seen to be too harsh in their methods and are obsessed with purity. They currently are fighting a long campaign against the Orks on the abandoned agri-world of Uzor Sigma. The chapter is famed for it's brutal assaults as well as a tendency to paint stylized skulls on their helmets to frighten the unintelligent, superstitious orks.

Here is a taster marine, i'll get more pics up when my Sanguinary guard finally arrive (been waiting over a week now...)

My Sanguinary Guard (after waiting 3 weeks...) so have started to layer on a basic scheme, i wanted my Sang. Guards armour to look ancient but also weather-beaten and still look functional. Here is the standard bearer in his current state, one pic with flash, the other without as well as the beginnings of the standard. Comments and criticism are welcome as always...
