Re: D&D: Dark Sun Project Log

Okay, got into some painting last night after work, and this morning before I had to go back. Here's what I did before I got some shut-eye last night

I want it to look unnatural and quasi reptilian, so I wanted a tannish-greenish look for the skin.

For the skin I started with a base of Catachan Green, then gradually blended in Bleached Bone. The carapace has a Dark Flesh/Chaos Black base, up through Dark Flesh. The next step will be to start lightening up through a dusky orange color.

and this is what i got before I headed in to work:

I continued blending with the skin (I just do layers, I can't wet blend yet) and added a wash of Gryphonne Sepia and Devlan Mud, then cleaned it up a bit. The Frills are still Catachan Green with a bit of a Thraka wash.

If I were to start over, I'd probably have started with a Snakebite Leather/Graveyard Earth base, worked up, then given it a green wash rather than what I did. At the moment I'm just trying to keep it from looking too muddy.

as always, Comments & Suggestions are welcome.

Hey hey looking nice there. Just one quickie: Could you make the dark hide mottled? I think it'd suitthe beast very well.

Goat>> I agree entirely. I'm going to try to stipple and speckle layers to give it some texture. I'll probably work up through a burnt orange, then give it a nice brown wash to mellow it a bit.

Without a natural, scaly looking texture I might worry about it looking too much like Battlecat.

Re: D&D: Dark Sun Project Log

Update: We kicked that Tembo around the block. It was one of the most satisfying encounters I've ever had at the gaming table.

Threadjack: I am the player who is painting up the PCs for this game, and Munin should be posting the initial pics of them soon. I'll be haunting this thread too, so if you have any questions or comments about the 4 PC minis I'll be glad to answer them.

Munin, did you want to use this thread to post some of our earlier DnD sets? The Castlevania set looks pretty good, and I wouldn't mind showing off the "Clue" set either.

Yorrik>> Don't see why not. This log is a culmination of all the work we've done up to this point, so I think it'd be fair to put up some of the PC's & monsters we've done for previous games too. Maybe even as far back as "Sifting through Gravedust"

Update: I finished the Tembo a few hours before his game debut. Here he is:

I'm very pleased with how the mini came out, as well as how he performed on the table. Admittedly my conniving players trapped him at one point, but he was able to cut his way through their fleshy bits. He died, but not before leaving unforgettable scars on the PC's hides.

Here's a shot of him taking a chunk out of our Tiefling Psion

As Yorrik mentioned, He is my player responsible for modeling and painting the PCs (and doing a bang up job). I will post more shortly, showing his work.

Re: D&D: Dark Sun Project Log

As i mentioned, the PCs are being worked on by Yorrik and thus far he's finished one.

The fight picture above featured the party's Controller, a Tiefling Psion named Phyrrus (03321: Damien, Hellborn Wizard)

Yorrik's WIP is our defender a Thri-Kreen Knight named Bo'bika (03142: Zizzix, Mantis Warrior) I'm particularly fond of the work he's put in on the axe. It lost it's blades before I got a picture of it, but you'll see once there's a bit more work on it.

Rounding out the other two are Reaper Pathfinder Minis
Our Striker, an Eladrin Hexblade, Sharos Loreweaver (60032: Seltyiel Iconic Eldritch Knight)

and the Leader, a Half Elf Ardent named Ka'si Tak'cho (60003: Amiri, Iconic Female Human Barbarian)

    More in time.

OK, seeing the Tembo next to the character model I realize how small it is. Until then I thought it was much bigger. I was also worried about not having enough texture on the green stuff back, but you did a good job painting that instead. The overall detail is better just by realizing it's correct size.
Overall a good job on that. Hope to see some more Dark Sun monsters here then.

Re: D&D: Dark Sun Project Log

mdiscala>> thanks for the props! I was really pleased with how it turned out since this was the first time I'd attempted a conversion like this. Although now I'm looking through my books to see if there are any other similar projects I'd want to try.

Solun Decius>> Thanks, that was one of the challenges I was facing. The Tembo picture looks big and beefy, but it's a medium sized creature so i had to find a base model that looked right while still fitting on a 1" base.

For now I'm working on minis for upcoming encounters, as well as a few that just seem to fit the campaign, so I'll keep up to speed with that. There's no game this week due to college scheduling (pfft. "school"), so instead I'm going to post some shot of minis from my gaming group's past games. We've been modifying our own PCs since around 2006, so there're several.

Re: D&D: Dark Sun Project Log

Okay, so I'm hijacking this thread for a moment to show off some of the minis Munin and I have done in the past.

First up we've got a lineup of minis I painted for a D&D game that was a pretty typical "travel over land killing monsters and relieving the locals of their loot" type story.

Before I started on the minis I had a conversation with a friend about how DnD4e was basically a board game with RP elements attached. That gave me the idea to really emphasize the role of the playing pieces. So I assigned every character a color, and tried to paint them up so that they adhered to that hue.

So Dragonborn Warlord = Red, Human Fighter = Orange, Half-orc ranger = green, human wizard = blue, and eladrin rogue = purple. It's one of my favorite character sets to date.

Deathskullork>> There should be more coming down the line, but probably nothing as impressive as the Tembo. Although I am searching high & low for some good, out of print minis.

Yorrik>> It's hardly a hijack if I asked you to post them. :P

Aside from how clean they look, one of my favorite aspects about the "Clue" set is how thoroughly you incorporated the color scheme, going as far as to mix the main shade into every other area, even the skin tone and bases.

As I noted in my previous post here's a few minis I painted from another game. This one was our Castlevania game that ended recently.

    From left to right:
The Muslim Invoker (14318: Cleric of Ishnar) greenstuffed on a turban and beard,
The Hindu Sorcerer (03449: Halmar, Young wizard) Yorrik added a turban & I added a goatee,
The Belmont Fighter (03065: Kellen, Nobleman Adventurer) hand swap to add a whip from another mini, and a shield from another (the Belmont had to have a whip)
the Teutonic Paladin (03171: Sir Thomas, Adventuring Knight)
the Catholic Cleric (02184: Jonas Kane)

Similar to Yorrik's set above, I tried to do a bit of color coordinating, although not to the same extent.

I'll be honest, I wasn't that sure about the way the paint job was going on the Tembo, but now it's completed I like it. It ties in really well with the paint style on the PC models. Good stuff.

How frequent are your games? Are you painting stuff now that will appear in a few sessions time? Does this mean that the monster encounters will get progressively less monochrome as the campaign advances?

Looking forward to seeing more. Those Castlevania minis are painted really well btw

Re: D&D: Dark Sun Project Log

AmazingAntman>> We use those rings as "bloodied" tokens, which is when a creature is at half or fewer hit points. Helps us keep track of who's hurt and who's not.

Abraham Danglebreech>> I'm glad you liked how he turned out. Even I wasn't sure I'll like the look until I put the final touches on the skin.

We game once a week on Wednesdays, and I've been planning my encounters pretty far in advance, so I'm painting models that might not see the table for a month or so. Some I don't even have plans for yet.

The monochrome schemes are mostly a result of the setting. Dark Sun is a post-apocalyptic desert fantasy world (it also doesn't have metal), so I've been painting the minis to reflect that, hence the warm earth tones. As the campaign progresses and becomes less desert/survival focused we'll probably see a greater variation of colors.

In my earlier Castlevania post I forgot to put up our two biggest enemies, Death, and Dracula himself. These were both painted by Yorrik as well.

Those are some truly excellent PC's! I was reading up on the Dark Sun setting just the other day, and I was rather intrigued. The Mantis Warrior makes an awesome Thri-Kreen. I also love the way the other PC's are painted in individual colors. My PCs tend to share a color scheme (basically only because I don't have many paints) but I would love to paint them like yours. Great work guys!

Ugh, you captured Death at the worst angle. Underneath the right wing was the last thing I did, and I had to hurry it through to have it ready for game time. "No one will notice I did a hack job on the UNDERSIDE of the wings," thought a younger, stupider me, "They'll be looking at it from the TOP!" Just looking at it makes me ill. Ugh.

A Castlevania RP? Now, you HAVE to tell me how that has played out. What system did you use and how exactly did the backstory and the playing go? I am very interested in that!!
