    78th Saket 'Sand Devil' Shocktroops

So, I love the Guard and Ive been collecting them for quite some time, but I never really knew what to do with them. After several attempts of making some Cadian army, I got tired of the Cadian green and decided to go with something completely different. So, I present you the 78th Saket 'Sand Devil' Shocktroops.

Anyways, Ive just figured this color scheme, and with uni and other distractions, I cant paint outside the weekends, so progress is gonna be a bit slow perhaps. But I always found that when I have some place to show my work in progress, I tend to try a lot more to stick to my own deadlines.

So far, Ive only finished two infantry squads and a platoon HQ squad, so basically a minimal platoon. Here are some photos I took:

Platoon HQ squad. Sorry for the crappy picture quality, my camera sucks.

Technically, this is second squad, as they count HQ squads as first squads in the Saket military tradition.

    And this is 3rd squad.

Anyways, tell me what you think, but be gentle, this is my first project log.

Next up is going to be a Sentinel squadron. Not entirely sure on how Im going to paint them yet, but Ill figure something out

I quite like the rubble bases, they're pretty convincing considering they're just pieces of sprue. The best part about your painting though is the camo, its really good. And the shoulder pad details.
I would have to say a few washes here and there would help quite a bit.

The rubble supports the camo color choice. Keep up the good work.

    Looking good.
But like Icreamboy said, wash them, id's say something not tooo dark, like maybe gryphone sepia or ogryn flesh for the uniforms and baal red for the armour.

Re: 78th Saket 'Sand Devil' Shocktroops

Thanks guys. I will definitely try out some washing then. Btw, its been a while since Ive bought any paint, so is a wash basically the same thing as the old inks? Or is there a difference, besides the names.

Anyways, Ive been assembling and painting the weekend (and today as well) and Ive assembled 3 Sentinels now. And Ive also painted 2 of them, and to be honest, Im quite pleased with results. Anyways, here are some pictures:

I used the flash on the camera to make pictures of Sentinel 5, so thats why it looks so bright red.

Im particularly proud on the lightning coming from the Plasma Cannon

Two lessons Ive already learned. First, I really need to buy new paint, some of them are starting to dry up a bit to much. Especially the white is a pain to use these days. Anyways, Ill go buy new paints next Saturday and Ill buy some washes then as well.
Second, I hate my camera. It absolutely does no justice to my models :P

Ugh, now another week of Uni before I can go home and paint some more. Oh well.

Yes, there is a difference between ink and wash.
Inks shine, washes are dull. Washes are like normal colors watered down, but have a more regular color application.

Love the red guard! Maybe add a cream panel or two to the sentinels? Oh and I'm a big fan of the red brick rubble, though maybe weed out some of the sprueier looking bits next time.

I was debating with myself over if I should add any camouflage stuff on the Sentinels, but in the end I decided against it. I think the Sentinels look better if I stick to just one color.

I will use camouflage patterns on the tanks, once I get to those. But first I want to finish the last sentinel and some more infantry. Ive got some mortar teams lined up, as well as second platoon to be painted once Im done with the Sentinel.

Soo, its weekend once more, and that means I had some time to paint. And that means this log gets an update, yaaay!

Anyways, Ive bought some washes (Baal Red, Gryphonne Sepia and Ogryn Flesh) and geezus that stuff smells. But, Ive gotta admit, it does look a lot better then using ink. Ive had the chance to use it on the Sentinel. So, here are some pictures.

Yeah, I think its one of the best looking ones so far.

Well, now that my Sentinel squad is done, Ive started working on some Mortar teams. I expect to have more pictures ready tomorrow.

The Sentinal came out rather well, they yellows and whites especially. they can be rather hard to do well over a dark base colour.

Yes, the white was hard to do. It took several layers before I got it right. That and the fact that I bought a new bottle of white paint which was not half dried up :P

Anyways, working on a mortar team now. More pictures later today.

Oops, sorry Im a bit late with the pictures.

Anyways, mortar team is done. Im still not sure what wash to take, because I kinda like both.

Also, two shots of some 'action' because I can.

2nd squad moving up with the mortar supporting them from the ruins.

3rd squad moving out supported by the Sentinels.

Anyways, more mortars coming up next weekend I think.

Re: 78th Saket 'Sand Devil' Shocktroops

And its time for another update yaaay. Sadly, I did not have a whole lot of time to paint this weekend, so I only managed to paint 3 more mortar crew members.

For the last mortar I wanted a little different guy, with a vox and not a crouching stand. But I did not have a suitable model assembled so I had to make one first. I did take a picture of him, but forgot to upload it. So it will have to wait till next week.

Also, next week is a week off for me from uni, so I have much more time to paint things then.

Re: 78th Saket 'Sand Devil' Shocktroops

Yes, quick update on what Ive been doing lately. No painting Im afraid, just assembling some models.

This is gonna be the last guy for my mortar team. Hes gonna be the guy who has to coordinate the mortar fire with the rest of first platoon they are supporting.

First company command squad. Yeah, I still need to glue the company flag to the model, but Im gonna wait till hes painted.

And these guys. I think they look pretty cool. Its gonna be the medic for the Command squad, but I felt that it would be more fun if they were a team that is caring for some wounded soldier.

Re: 78th Saket 'Sand Devil' Shocktroops

So yes, Ive done some more model building today instead of painting.

Anyways, I really really really hate working with tin models for a variety of reasons, so when I can, I prefer to scratch build a count as model out of plastic parts then to buy the original model. Thats what Ive been doing today.

So anyways, thats supposed to be a stormtrooper. I always thought that with a little work a Space Marine scout looks a hell lot more like an awesome stormtrooper then those tin models. I know, my green stuff skills arent the best, so Ill need to practice that more. Perhaps I should work some more on the gun as well.

    Anyways, comments are always appreciated.

EDIT: sorry for the crappy pics.

Those ST helguns look very good, IMO.

What did you use? I spy a bolter, SM scout shotgun and some kind of scope.

A better and clearer picture would be nice, too. :-)

    Thanks!
    You spied correctly :P
Ive used the bolters that you get with the scouts, cut of the end of the barrel and the top of it, glued the end of a scout shotgun on it. The scope also comes from the scout sprue. They got scopes on their bolt pistols, so I cut those off and glued them on top of my hellguns.

Ill try to get a better picture of them with the next update. I plan to do more of them this week.

It looks good but I think you should use something else than the shotgun as the barrel or try to blend it in better with the boltgun.

Also, the hellgun is some sort of energyweapon so try to cover up the bolt-action case-dispenser thingy on the bolter.

I made some minor changes to the guns as you will see when Im done painting them. Ive cut off the top of the shotgun (the sort of rail thing) and removed the green stuff line to the back of the model. It didnt look so good on most of them, so I need to practice my greenstuff skills more before I attempt that again. Im keeping the case dispenser though.

    Anyways, proper update now.

Meet Sergeant-Commander Strauss of the attached Special Operations platoon attached to the first company.

Sergeant-Commander Strauss is one of the most popular guys within the first company. During combat operations he fights with discipline and courage, where he wont take a step back against the enemies of mankind. But when the troops are not fighting, he is easy going and loves a good joke.
Strauss always fights with his trusted plasma pistol and powersword. Over the years Strauss is one of the few people within the Imperium that can say that he has mastered his plasma pistol as by now he instinctively feels when its about to overheat and when he can still fire a shot. His right hand is however covered with old burn scars from times when his pistol did overheat.

(This has no effects in game or anything. I just liked the look of the model and decided to create a little background for him. Otherwise he just counts as a stormtrooper sergeant with a plasma pistol and powersword)

EDIT: oh yeah, Ive build 4 other Stormtrooper/Karskin/Special Operation models and Im painting them now. So stay tuned for more, later this weekend :P
