Inandantia's Space Hulk exits the warp!

Hello one and all! After a long time coming I've finally got my space hulk underway, a project I've been putting off so I can do these most excellent models justice. I'll be trying out a few things I've never done before from taking photos (that are any use) to actually keeping a log going. Will it be perfect? Almost certainly not! But who cares, it's space hulk and it's awesome

Anyhoo, first up is Noctis. I'd been plotting everything as much as I could over the last few months, how I'd do the red, how would I go about the purity seals, how much variety will there be in the gems, and so on. All in all I'm quite pleased with it and most importantly I learned a lot, ready for the next marine. Enjoy!

Looking at the pictures now there are a few bits which don't show up in real life and now I can see them wouldn't mind touching up (the eyes for a start ) and I hope the picture aren't too bad. Hopefully I'll get better as I go.

Edit: It probably goes without saying but of course comments and criticisms are most welcome, I like to take all the advice I can get!

Re: Inandantia's Space Hulk exits the warp!

You have a good start there. I understand that photos don't tend to show mini's very accurately, but it looks as if some of the colours are a little bright compared to the rest of the model - the yellow in particular. I would recommend Iyanden Darksun for the yellow rather than Sunburtst over white as it remains muted, is still yellow, and it only needs one coat over even black. The pipes (yellow and green) could also probably do with thin black lines between them to make them appear to be the same thickness. I know the models well and some parts are filled in and you need to use your painting skill to hide them. Not so much with this model but especially with the others.

I love the aged look to the parchment seals and the clear detail of the gold. Also the targeter thing looks really well done - as you say, possibly a lighter highlight of scorpion green mixed with bleached bone would work well on the eyes - and then these would match the shiny, glowing feel of the targeter and not look the same as the pipes.

Overall, I wouldn't worry too much about changing things that are already done though as we can always see something that needs improving on our models and trying to change things can have disasterous results.

Lookin good! Love the hulk terminators and it looks like you're doin a good job. Will you be painting all those 'stealers to?

Keep it up, look forward to more.

@wilsongrahams: you're right about the yellow it does stick out so hopefully I'll be able to tone it down on the other models. Oddly enough (and this may give you an idea just how bright the camera has made it) it is painted with iyandan darksun, with a very thin highlight of golden yellow, not the brighter sunburst! Things like the pink on the seals have also come out really bright, which is strange as they're quite dull on the model. I'm finding all the stuff with photographing models really interesting, feels like it's opened up a completely new aspect of the hobby for me! Good advice with the black lines, I may try a black wash which will hopefully do the hard work for me and possibly tone down the colours.

Cheers for taking a look, good to hear from you!

@sprugly: Thanks for the comments, and I'm with you the hulk terminators are amazing, personaly think they're some of GW's best work. I certainly will be doing the 'stealers, it just wouldn't be hulk without them! I'll put up some wip of the stealers and another terminator soon

@precinctomega: thanks for the encouragement, I like a lot of your work so really appreciate it!

Ok so another terminator for you all to ogle This is my favourite Terminator out of the bunch and I only managed to resist not painting him first as I wanted to have a practice on Noctis first!

    Anyhoo, brother Deino everyone

I like to think I learned from my mistakes on the first model and I'm quite pleased with how the robe came out; I wanted to make sure the purity seals didn't blend in with it or anything.

I'm actually a little bit further ahead with my painting but I'm playing catch up with the photos. The problem of having to steal my girlfriend's camera I suppose. Hopefully I should be able to get hold of it tomorrow and post some WIP pics I took.

As always, lay the C&C on me

Well as promised here are some WiP shots. Not fantastic pics of the genestealers but wanted to show you all the colour scheme I'm going for. As for the the Srg, his armour is finished along with a few other bits like the lining of the cape, still plenty of details to go with him however. Enjoy

These are really good. I like the models a lot, but you have definitely done justice to them as well with your great painting skills. The stealers already really look like they're running down blue-lit tunnels - wow!

Thanks andyg! I should have some finished pictures of them up soon. The 'stealers were both fun and hair pulling at the same time, fine now I've got my technique down but I started painting them with only the general idea of how I wanted them to look and absolutely no clue of how I was going to do it! Lots of trial and even more error, still all's well that ends well

@precintctomega: these guys have been great fun to paint so far, I'm living the dream right now

Here's the finished Sgt Lorenzo (well nearly finished, I've tidy a few minor bits up since these pics) and as soon as I can take some decent pics I'll have the finished 'stealers up too!

Re: Inandantia's Space Hulk exits the warp!

Thanks chainaxe and Deus Ruinus, I really do appreciate the feedback, it's making doing this log all the more satisfying!

I'm struggling to get some decent pics of the finished stealers and don't want to just post any old rubbish! On the plus side I've managed to get more done so when the sun does finally show itself I'll have plenty to share with you all

For now, hows about a lovely group shot of the three amigos, awwww (disclaimer: be thankful I haven't posted a picture of all the door stands I've been painting!!!)

Edit: I forgot to mention that I will be starting the librarian soon and hoped to get some tips. Wanted him to be a very dark blue in the main (thinking necron abyss to start with?) then highlight the edges in something very bright, like ice blue but not really sure how best to go about it. Any suggestions would be wicked cool, cheers!

Re: Inandantia's Space Hulk exits the warp!

Time for a proper update and the genestealers I've been promising! I struggled to get decent pictures of the WIP ones due to the poses so I did what anyone would do when something is difficult: I gave up and went for the easier option, in this case more "photogenic" genestealers.

Enjoy and let me know what you think of the colour scheme

I love your 'stealers mate! Great and 'natural' looking alien horror!

You are really tempting me to dig out my sadly unpainted Space Hulk Minis and have a go.

Your Sgt Lorenzo looks very regal which should make a great contrast to the 'stealers too.

    Thanks for putting these up

Re: Inandantia's Space Hulk exits the warp!

Thanks Lowmans! I really wanted to make these guys look liked they'd just burst out of the shadows and as for the Sgt, I wasn't sure if I'd overdone it on the gold but I think it's ok. It was one of the models where you can't really tell what it will be like until you've put the last bit of paint on! I also tried a sepia wash on the gold for him as well which I don't usually do, I either just highlight it or use the old chestnut ink if I want it to look a bit more antique-ish. As it is, his gold looks different from everyone elses so far, which is probably fitting, plus it toned it down a bit which it needed.

You should crack them out, they're great models and this is the most fun I've had painting in ages!

Glad you're enjoying the pics, I hope everyone else is too

Re: Inandantia's Space Hulk exits the warp!

Great work. I thought I had subscribed to this so sorry for the late reply!

On the new photos the colours look much better and it really must have been the flash - I get the same trouble when taking pics that don't match the model.

I love the stealers - almost a reversed scheme with the skin being more of a blue tone, but the overall purple matches the fluff where they have purple bodies. I have been putting off doing the stealers due to needing to mix lots of colours.

Advice on doing the Librarian, hmm, now I agree Necron Abyss would be a good start as it's similar to the old Deadly Nightshade which I started with. The way I painted mine was to apply black ink after the first coat, then layer it up again, before adding regal blue and enchanted blue with ice blue highlights - most of these were kept thin. I used a wash of thinned regal blue and then selective black ink again after, and the overall effect stayed quite dark.

This post from my painting log shows how he turned out with a similar method you propose, so you should go for it. Ice blue is certainly better than adding white to darker blues as it keeps the colour strong and stops things looking washed out.

I can't wait to see more. I love your strong golds. :-)

Thanks wilsongrahams, I think the sun finally appearing is improving the pics, thank goodness! Glad you like the 'stealers, I'm quite pleased with the photos of them as they show the colours pretty much spot on.

Cheers for the advice on the librarian as well, I agree that that blue needs mixing with different shades of blue, white just doesn't quite work. I wasn't sure how black would affect it though, so that helps. Hopefully should be finished and pics up in a couple of weeks!

And to celebrate my 100th post, how about some pics of brother Goriel

After being inundated with responses () I think it's about time for another update! I'll do my best to re-steal my girlfriends camera so I can do some group shots and if you're lucky some in game shots. If you're really, really lucky I may even do a mission report with pics... well, do you feel lucky punk?
