Started this fella last night. Very early just roughing out the basic frame first before trimming muscle, adding, etc. to get the body right. Then lots of nice skin effects, warts, wrinkles, etc. Should be different from the norm.

Looking good so far, What kind of mini is this going to be?
(something with a squid for a head?)
is it going to be a stand alone model or part of an army? looks very intriging!
He is one of the character types for the game system background I'm doing. I have a few of the sculpts done just need to get everything cast and finalized. This will be a centerpiece figure but I might make some servents for him also.![]()
It looks awesome so far. More! More!
Fantasy log of...Stuff: Vampire Counts, Warriors of Chaos, Southlands Ogres, Cryx plus whatever else tickles my fancy.
Did a bit more last night:

Bit more finished. Next I take a break from sculpting for a day or two and stare at things wrong to begin fixing the anatomy and get it all right. I then can bake and do the hands, head, etc. I'll probably mold the body and do the skin textures over the resin. That way I can make a couple demons from the armature of this figure.

Incredible skills, HiveTrygon, just insane. Your work that I've seen is like a marvellous vision of the fantastic, and as far as I'm concerned, as good as it gets. Amazing shape and muscle definition, perfect. I really look forward to seeing where you go with this creature!

Thank you but honestly it's less skill and more study. About a year or 2 ago I was horrible and looking back it was terrible work I was doing. I had lots of feedback to learn anatomy. I thought knowing the muscles and where they sat on the body was enough. That is not the case. The ability to understand how things work in unison is where you begin to be able to create good sculpts. Took me a full year of anatomy study to become good enough to do what I'm doing now and the improvements each time become easier.
It's something I like to point out for people because if you work hard and don't give up everyone can learn to sculpt through study. I was fearful that the improvements would stop but each sculpt gets better because I continue to study. That to me is the key to sculpting nice figures. Oh, and listen to feedback if you can get good crits from people who also understand anatomy.
Awesome, and way to be humbleI see what you're saying for sure, though. I actually checked out the link in your signature, and I've looked at some of the, obviously, older work. Now, I'm not sure if it's all your's, as I'm still a little ignorant in regards to the structure and staff of Troll Forged Miniatures, but there is an incredible jump in quality there.
Also, regarding the placement of muscles and general anatomy, I never really thought about looking at how the body works together, and actually moves and works, to create a solid sculpt. It makes complete sense, now that you mention it, and perhaps that's a huge contributor to the fact that the newer sculpts are much, much more dynamic and impressive. For example, in the sculpt above, right now to me, the creature looks as though it's stalking or striding forward, and already there's a great sense of movement to the model. If I try to picture it actually moving, I can almost see the muscle bundles and anatomy of the thing rippling, moving in unison to propel it forward. It has an amazing sense of movement, actually, without being over the top, standing on its' head, running, whatever. It's much more understated, and much more effective. It's a quality that's almost subliminal, rather than obvious, and to me that makes it all the better. I love it.
Thanks very much for the insight, HiveTrygon. I've recently begun working with green stuff on my models for the first time ever, in any noticable way anyway. I mean, beyond strengthening a join, or something along those lines. I find sculpting with green stuff on my models highly enjoyable and rewarding, but taxing and tricky none the less. I'm sure you're right though, looking at the big picture, rather than just placement, and A LOT of practice and experience, it'll come along. Thanks very much, and again, I can't wait to see more of this work.

Some stuff is mine but Troll Forged is my community of artists who are friends and also learning artists who can't break into sculpting so easily and need a bit of help. I mold for them free and cast their works for sale and give them royalties to help them learn and get started. It helps me by molding more and learning new things while helping them along the way. Icesword is one of my senior members and the 3rd to join up with me there. He posts a lot in the 40K section so you might have seen his stuff also.
Anyway if you have questions ask and I'll see what I can do to answer as I go.![]()
Great, thanks so much, HiveTrygon, I appreciate that very much! I can definitely see myself messaging you for some advice in the near future. I'm currently working on building a brand new greenskin army, and I'd like to make it something special. I figure some custom scuplting on some of my Boyz would be a great start to do so.
Again, love your work, Trygon, and I appreciate the insight and response so much!

Here is the start of the hands. I'll do these in steps so you can see them develop.

Here you go everyone. I am doing these in time for you as I sculpt the hands so enjoy. I'm limited to what I can do and sculpting looking into the screen facing me is hard as it's backward but I hope it helps. Next time I'll close the window.

Next part. I'll continue these as I've had nice emails saying they help. I'll do textures, stamps, etc. as I get time.

Thanks for the tutorials man! Seriously, very useful and well explained. I know it's not optimal for you to sculpt while filming but I really appreciate you taking the time to do them anyway. I can't wait to see the final result.
So far so good!
Your welcome, lots of people have found these useful so I'll continue. This is the next part.
