The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 6 (& MAR WIP)

Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2010 to August 2011), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you use a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is to be used as the completed work thread for February, up until the 7th. Please only post last month's completed work until the 7th.

On the 8th it will then become the work in progress (wip) thread for March. Feel free to post any wip pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the wip thread, but please keep it wip. Do not post any completed work for March until the next thread opens at the start of April. The next thread will start out as to place the post your completed entries for this month, and after the deadline (initially set as the 7th of each month) will become the next wip thread.

If you have not posted by the 8th, then you will have to use one of your 'Jokers'. If you have failed to post by the 8th and have already used up both of your 'Jokers', then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

    Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately you are now too late! Don't worry though, the Tale of Painters will be starting again later in the year (August/September).

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, last year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to use my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to use them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : If I 'catch up' with my points, can I 'buy back' a 'Joker'?
A : Yes, just let me know in your monthly post if you would like to do this. For example, if you have a target of 200 points per month and have played one of your 'Jokers', you could 'buy back' your 'Joker' if you can manage to make up the 'Jokered' 200 points at some point. This could be from painting 400 points one month, painting 300 points over two months, or just making up smaller amounts here and there (as long as you're back on track).

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced in the last Tale to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the D&D dice roller if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

I'll start off by posting an entry for February. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to me (misterboff).

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 6 (& MAR WIP)

    misterboff's Dark Eldar: February 2011 (D6 roll = 5)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 195 POINTS (monthly target: 175 points)
TOTAL TO DATE: 705 POINTS (target to date: 700 points)
    #JOKERS USED: 2#

BACKGROUND/THEME: "Wych Cult of the Blade Denied"
The Blade Denied is an elder Wych House that specialises in the art of using their foe's weapons against themselves. The irony of seeing a warrior impaled upon his own blade is always a favourite of this cult, for it shows that even a weapon cannot be trusted.

    UNIT(S):
10 Hellions inc. Helliarch w/Phantasm Grenade Launcher and Stun Claw - 195 points

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
    Straight from the sprue.

    PAINTING/BASING:
I'm very roughly following the painting guide from WD371, but substituting purple in where necessary. The bases are simply Astronomicon Grey followed by Citadel Snow.

    Silver: Boltgun/Badab/Mithril
    Bronze: Tin Bitz/Devlan/Dwarf Bronze
    Black: Chaos/Adeptus/Badab
    Eldar Flesh: Space Wolves+Tallarn/Devlan/SWG+Dheneb/Rotting
    Flayed Skin: Tallarn(+Vomit/Dark)/Devlan/Tau Sept Ochre/Rotting
    Purple: Hormagaunt/Leviathan/Liche
    Blue: Mordian/Asurmen/Enchanted/Ice
    Green: Knarloc/Thraka/Goblin/Scorpion
    Orange: Macharius/Baal/Vomit/Blazing

    STILL TO DO:
Freehand on the Skyboards (which I'll hopefully do at the same time as the Reavers).

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Getting some Hellions finished (I love their unique look), and I've also upped my points from 1500 to 1750 (because I've got enough planned).
Lows: A severe lack of motivation this month, I only started painting in the last few days of February. They're also a bit of a pain to fit in my case.

    NEXT MONTH:
I'm going to expand my Fast Attack by adding a squad of Reavers...

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 6 (& MAR WIP)

I mentioned during the month I'd broken a finger again so I haven't done much this month. Hopefully that'll change soon as I'm playing in a tournament in two weeks time where I need two Storm Ravens and a Dreadnought.....

    Mini77's Dead Suns Space Marines: January 2010 (D6 Roll = 3)

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 189 points
    TOTAL TO DATE: 2267 points

    DIY marine chapter.

    UNIT(S):
Assault Marine (1), Power Fist, Bolt Pistol - 53 points
Assault Marine (1), Meltagun, Bolt Pistol - 28 points
Assault Marine (6), Boltgun, Chainsword - 108 points

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
Made entirely from spares from my bitz box. Hooray for cheapness.

    STILL TO DO:
    These are all done.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
    Highs: Getting something finished.
    Lows: Broken finger.

    NEXT MONTH:
Two Storm Ravens and a Dreadnought. Hopefully another squad of Assault Marines too which'll bring me back on track.

    Hi there,
after a work-heavy month (high season) and a new GF (an otherwise great gal - which absolutely hates
an adult man to still play with these toys!! ) I still managed to paint something when I was able
    to evade both!

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 630 POINTS
    TOTAL TO DATE: 2.145 POINTS

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
    Astartes Chapter: Space Sharks,
    Crimson Fists

    UNIT(S):
    1 Crimson Fist Predator
    1 Crimson Fist Land Raider
    1 Space Shark Land Raider

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
Finished 2 of my many (5) Rogue Trader Land Raiders! No conversions for this month.

    PAINTING/BASING:
Most colours have 3 stages, either basecoat/highlight/wash or basecoat/wash/highlight.
    Metal: Chaos/drybrushed Boltgun/Badab
    Black: Chaos/Regal Blue
    Grey: Charadon/Codex/Fortress/Badab
    Sand: Bubonic Brown/Bleached Bone/Flesh Wash
    Red:Mechrite/Blood/Blazing Orange/Badab
    Yellow: Sunburst/White

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Sweet old memories while painting…
    Lows: None

    NEXT MONTH:
Well I started a tactical squad of Space Sharks and continued on the 3rd Space Sharks Land Raider and hope to find enough time to get them done!

    And here the pics:

Just to show the nice craqueler effect on the doors, with this the Land Raider looks really old and weathered.

Cheers and happy painting to all!

    @Vimes

How did you achieve the crackle effect? I tried using Vallejo Crackle Medium to paint some power armour (as artificer armour) but it didn't work too well.

Hi Mini77, i also tried to use that one and i failed. This one is a 2 component colourless laque. You put on the first one and let it dry
for about 8 hours and then you put on the second component, which will then make the charcteristic cracks after about 12 hours.
I would wait at least 18 hours and then work some burnt umbra oil paint into the cracks (i use q-tips for this) and then remove the
eccess colour with a paper tissue imbued with a little bit of turpentine. Will try to put on a pic of the pots the next days.
    Hope this helps.

P.S.: Hope your finger heals fast.

    TOTAL TO DATE: 745 points

    UNIT(S):
Valkyrie with multiple rocket pods and heavy bolter sponsons.

    STILL TO DO:
    Finish off the base.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: I actually managed to get a fair amount done this month, in addition to the above, I've 90% finished a squad of Veterans, so barring any major catastrophes or laziness I should be able to buy back a joker next month \o/. Plus I quite like the interior of my Valk.
    Lows: Nothing really.

@Mini77: Hi, here as promissed the pic of the craquelure laque.

It's easy to use, but it is rather time consuming, i would suggest to use it either for characters or when you batch paint a squad.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 6 (& MAR WIP)

This month I have managed to finish the fith and final squad of my platoon and paint 3 basilisks. I will be submitting the squad and 1 bassie this month, and hopefully I will be able to base the entire platoon this month!

Units painted: Squad 5 of the 1st Platoon and a Basilisk.
    Points painted: 180
    Highs: AN ENTIRE PLATOON PAINTED!!
Lows: Makes me think of the next platoon to paint one day.
    Pictures:

Thanks Vimes, I'll check them out.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 6 (& MAR WIP)

    Irondog's Orks (and Grey Knights)

Total Painting for February '11: 300 points of Orks

Total Army Size: 1370 points (Orks - 900 pts / Grey Knights - 470 pts)

    Die Roll: 5

    Units:
It's Waaagh time again, gang. This month I finished up several Ork projects that have been in the works for a while. I painted up 10 Shoota Boyz to bulk up one of my mobs to the full 30, another 'Vommit Kommit' (Deffkopta) so I now have a total of four, a 'Hot Rod' style Wartrukk, and last but not least a MASSIVE 'Tow Trukk' Battlewagon for my Big Mek.

    Conversions:
    Oh man, where to start...

Well, other than the Shoota Boyz, pretty much everything is a custom conversion. Instead of eating up space on Warseer, I'll just provide some links to the full project logs on my website for those who are interested.
    Vommit Kommits
    'Hot Rod' Watrukk
    Tork's Wrecka (Battlewagon)

    Painting:
Full details in the project logs.

    Basing:
Gravel and pebbles, then painted with Bestial Brown, followed by drybrushes of Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone in that order.

    Still to Do:
Sit back. Drink some Whiskey... and sleep.

    Highs and Lows:

Highs: Orks, baby!!!! Is there a cooler army? I think not.

    Lows: None

    PICTURES

    First up, the Shoota Boyz.

The Vommit Kommit, my version of a Defkopta.

    The 'Hot Rod' Wartrukk.

    Tork's Wrecka, a monster Battlewagon/Tow Trukk

And an 'Army Shot' showing all the Orks I've done for the thread thus far.

The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their own turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! we see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude. - Uthan the Perverse, Eldar Philosopher

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 6 (& MAR WIP)

    Dark Eldar 1500 points: February 2010 (D6 roll = 2)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 148 POINTS (monthly target: 150 points)
    TOTAL TO DATE: 642 POINTS
    JOKERS USED: 2

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
the Kabal of the Bloody Tongue

    UNIT(S):
Incubi (22pts), Mandrake (15pts), Wych Hekatrix with Phantasm Grenade Launcher, Agoniser (50pts), 4 Kabalite Warriors with Dark Lance (61pts)

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
All models are straight from the box.

    PAINTING/BASING:
I want my Dark Eldar to have a neon/Tron feel to them.
The armour is mostly dark blue (Necron Abyss) with light blue (Ice Blue) highlights. Some plates are painted silver.
Glyphs and hair are bright green (Scorpion Green) highlighted to white.
I'm painting the Dark Eldar's skin as I would bone. Dheneb Stone base with a Devlan Mud wash. Highlighted with more Dheneb Stone up to white.
The bases are bits of slate and sand. The slate is painted Codex Grey and drybrushed with Fortress Grey. The sand is painted Snakebite Leather and drybrushed with Dheneb Stone and then given a wash of Devlan Mud. Finally I added some static grass.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Still having fun painting these guys...
Lows: None at all really. Finally got my head around the Mandrakes.

    NEXT MONTH:
Hopefully my haemonculus and a harlequin will be ready for next month. (I said this last month I know

@Irondog: Im absolutely loving the massive wheels and the general designs of your vehicles!

@Biginbelgium: The scouts actually look really realistic, not sure if thats what you were going for, but youve acheived it.

@Vimes: Lovely to see such old tanks still in use.

    @Mini77: Brilliant painting as ever!

@: Fanny Crowbar: Its nice to see a brighter Dark Eldar scheme, especially one carried off so well.

    Thanks dude!

Thought I'd drop some WIP shots of the things I'm trying to get ready for next weekend. I'm not sure why I went to the trouble of detailing the interior so much, as most of it is obsured by the pilot anyway.

@Mini77 as far as interiors go, that looks like a heck of a lot of fun to paint, and you've done a brilliant job on it!
