Tale of Terrain Builders Month 1 (and March's work in progress)

The Tale of Terrain Builders 2011 - 2012

This is the thread to post your work done in February. After a week (so we get a nice chunk of awesome scenery pics) it becomes where you post your WIP for March. Hold off commenting about others work for the first week, as we want a bunch of shiny pictures. I don't think we need the dice roll mechanic for commenting since there are only a little ove 30 participants. If we need to add it in future months we will.

    What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Terrain Builders is to help motivate those involved to start and complete enough scenery to fill a gaming board in the next twelve months.
Because not everyone can spare the same amount of time for various reasons, there are different levels of commitment. The standard, or Mens, level of commitment is to create a single, reasonably sized piece of terrain per month*. The lesser level of commitment is for the Boys category, and requires the completion of a piece of terrain every other month, but with the commitment to show progress each month!

The builders do this each month for the next 12 months, starting with their first post on the first day of March 2011, and finishing with their last post on the first day of February 2012. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to gather scrap, parts, tools and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in February.

    * A single piece of scenery at least the size of a hill of building will be considered one piece. A barricade, tree, rock spire or similar would be considered too small on its own to count as a whole piece of scenery, however multiple such pieces would count as a single entry. If in doubt, terrain that covers a diameter of roughly 6” is what we are going for, but this is a loose definition. We certainly aren’t going to chide anyone because they only built an outhouse and a tree! Afterall, getting stuff done is the name of the game! Obviously, larger projects can be broken up over multiple days.*

-A note on building whole Tables and Dioramas: Both building the actual playing surface for playing games on and Dioramas count for this tale. Dioramas can use the Boys level of commitment (unless they are truly large), and will count each month as long as appreciable progress is made each month. Tables, on the other hand, can range from a simple coating of flock to very elaborate set-ups. For these, if your planned table is pretty simple, use the boys category. If it is complex, use the mens. In either case, entries are judged on whether decent progress is made. Again, none of us are too anal about this. Just build and have fun and everything should be OK!

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with 1 piece of completed, usable scenery. That is 1 piece for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the beginning of each month a new thread will appear for the builders to post your previous months construction efforts and the rest of the builders to offer words of encouragement.

In twelve months we will all end up with enough Terrain to cover a table, which is awesome!(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end will... it's harder than you think!)

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying whether you want to build for the mens or boys category.

Q : Can I build more than one piece per month?
A : Yes, you can build as much as you like. However, please only post one of your pieces in the monthly thread to keep pace with everyone. Save one for the next month... take one off even . Of note though, is the * point above stating small scenery items count as 1/3rd of a whole piece. We would expect 3 of these as a single entry.

Q : What happens if I build a GIANT piece (like a huge defense laser)?
A : If you create a truly epic piece of scenery, then you're welcome to post it as s single months entry. However, you could (based on how many 'buildings/hills' in size you consider it count it as 2 or more months entries and post it at the end of that time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Re: Tale of Fantasy Builders Month 1 (and March's work in progress)

And the Thread wouldn't be complete if I had nothing toi show for a month's work, so here's my February work!

    What it is:
I'm spending the first half of the tale building a dungeon with 53 pieces (one for each card in a deck of cards, and then a starting location). The first month is 7 such pieces. It may seem like a lot, but there is probably only as much work here as a single building as it is all, relatively, flat.

    How it's made:
A base of foamcore provides the base. Then tiles made of wood, cork, or other matierial are inlayed. There is a blank 1/2 border all around, and then a 1/2 decorative border for each piece. This is so larger peices still fit without being crowded.

    Painting:
Base colors are applied. Then they are drybrushed heavily, then given a few dark purple washes to bring out the shadows. The wash is applied more heavily from the center of each room to make the lighting look like it hits the center. A final light drywbrush of a bleached bone like color finishes them off.

    THIS MONTH:
So here it is; the fruits of the first month. I wanted to finish any unfinished bits first before starting something new. Some projects were started five years ago.
I made an outhouse/chicken run and a stable from scratch. And all the furniture you can see in the other pictures. I also did some finishing work to the outside of some buildings, mostly flora. And finally a group shot of all the terrain I currently call my own.
I still need to finish my tutorial for the tower into a single pdf file, that will be done next month.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
    Highs: finally having it done.
Lows: it took a lot of time, just two days a month from now on.

    NEXT MONTH:
Hills, see attached file for details.

    PARTICIPANT: Maglok - Boys

    Shrine of the Pharoah
Most of the holy places of the lich priests are within the tombs, catacombs and cities of the dead. This altar to the sun-god is one of the very few exceptions. In the middle of the desert, somewhere between Khemri and Quatar lies very holy of places. They don't look like much, but many have been lured in by potential treasure to find only death. The place has a hypnotic effect on anyone but the mortuary cult's lich priests. It is said that those living that find the place and step unto the altar, get the sudden compulsion to sacrifice themselves to the sun-god.

This is why the lich priests don't have the place guarded, it guards itself. A trap for unweary adventurers and armies alike. This is the Shrine of the Pharoah. Before the curse of Nagash the kings of the land would go there once a year, alone, to sacrifice something personal to gain the approval of their gods.

So since I am entering in boys I will post my progress on this piece and finish it next month. I am waiting for some more egyptian themed stuff to come in that I can make a mold of.

HIGH: I love detailing this stuff. Nice that I found some old school scorpion swarmey bits.

LOWS: I don't think I'll leave those mummies as statues, they reek of Vampire Counts. They are mummies from back in the Undead united days btw.

    Some pictures with explanations.

Overview of the shrine. It is still heavily WIP. I plan to add a base with sand and put some of the bits halfway under the sand.

Detail of the altar. The sticks are torches. I will be adding the fire later on.

Two statues guard the shrine. (I might change these to something more appropriate)

A fire everburning in the skull on the obelisk. Will probably greenstuff the details a bit more.

A flock of scorpions make their home in the shrine.

Here's one chaotic warped forest. The trees used to be unit fillers for my nurgle warriors, but I thought this would be a better use. I drew some inspiration from the new and old Beastman books. All the trees have leering eyes, a couple have fanged mouths, and one has nurglings hiding in the branches and roots. I painted the trees in a faded, sickly brown.

    PARTICIPANT: Thoume - Mens

THIS MONTH: Ork Scrap Shanties (6)

Burgut glanced around the corner of the ramshackle shanty. Several dozen structures stretched far into the distance. Made of nothing more than dried mud and scrap, these were a common sight around Mekkaton, the dwellings of the various mobs who had yet to plunder enough scrap for something bigger. It was tempting enough to push a wall down and watch the whole street tumble, yet the one Burgut was leaning against was surprisingly sturdy. Perhaps the numerous glyphs and symbols crafted onto it were holding it together...

A rival Deathskulls gang pilfered from their stash again. Something Burgut and his fellow Goffs didn't look kindly too. It had to be them! Any other mob would do the decent thing of smashing their way through and making their demands known face to face. This runty lot would rather take what they pleased without anyone looking.

On the bright side, they could get their stuff back plus kick a few extra teef out of them. Just for good measure...

They could be hiding anywhere here, but there was only one way to find out where. Signalling the mob behind him, the Goffs stampeded out of cover, heading towards the shacks conveniently marked with blue paint...

So heres the start to what will hopefully be an ork settlement. This was a project I tried starting last year and ended up with nothing but a few blocks of polystyrene stuck on foamboard! These were simple enough to make, basically the following:

    • Cut a small base out of foamboard
    • Glue a block of polystyrene or insulation foam in the middle. This could be any material really, we just need something for the walls to stick onto.
    • Cut the walls and roof out of foamboard, glue to the sides of the block (I used No More Nails for this. Don't know of other equivalents, some kind of epoxy filler will do)
    • Glue on any details you want
    • Texture any unused space with filler and seal any gaps

They are tall enough to block line of sight for troops and small vehicles, and can either be grouped up together or annexed to a larger building (storage, power supply etc.)

I might revisit the painting on some of these later, especially the door windows and various other details, but it was fun experimenting with a slightly different palette to what I normally use. Might do another batch later with some more variety to the basic shapes ('L' shapes etc.)

    HIGHS
    • Test bed for projects to come
    • Painting them!

    LOWS
    • Painting the first one (at the front of the group photo) didn't turn out as well as hoped
    • Was going to make 7 of these but wasn't too happy with the last one - didn't have enough detail on it and I couldn't realistically finish it before this deadline
    • On the last night a bottle of Daler Rowey black ink dropped off the table onto the floor and spilled everywhere whilst tidying up! Lucky its a laminate wood floor instead of carpet!

    NEXT MONTH'S THREAT
I finished a bigger building a couple of years ago and its in need of a repaint and detailing, now that I've set myself a benchmark with this lot! Got a few barricades as well that'll need the same treatment if I have time. Its going to be a busy March for me so I'm not looking at anything too ambitious just yet!

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders Month 1 (and March's work in progress)

This is where I'm at. I'll update the pic if I get any more painting done on it the coming week. I consider it playable as it is, though.

This is the GW Witchfate Tor, straight up. It's still missing the balconies, and I do want to make a huge detachable roof for it.

This is mostly me trying out some color theories for the rest of the table. I've never been good with greens, and this feels like a step in the right direction.

    HIGHS

My theorized method of drybrushing everything grey then washing the colors in works pretty good!

    LOWS

My initial plan of building my own balconies was quickly scrapped for playability purposes. If you're gonna have warriors running around on all floors on this thing, you really don't want miniatures balancing on little ledges on the outside of it.

    NEXT MONTH'S THREAT
Another tower. An old GW Fortress tower with a detailed top-floor interior + companion piece actually. I might do some barricades or a market stall or something as well, since I'll be cheating and painting something I already constructed a while back.

Since I'm only in the Boys category my plan is to build something one month and paint it the other.
So here is the piece I will be painting this month. Can't say that I built it as such, I merely assembled it, which was hard enough at times, though.

Hopefully I can start painting tonight. No clue how long it might take, although looking at the detail it should practically paint itself.
I stopped by the store yesterday to buy a bigger brush.

Not sure I am happy with it, simply because I think it is too plain...maybe I need to add some more too it.

First to present from last month`s work:

    The Town-Well from Tabletop-World

    [IMG][/IMG]

and the repaired Forgeworld-Barn, which i bought at ebay. I have to admit that it was really well painted, so i only did some detailing.

    [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

I had a little more time than expected because of the barn, so i started with the small parts of the Merchant House by Tabletop-World

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders Month 1 (and March's work in progress)

So, having abandoned my swamp-table, I went with the French countryside instead. Or, to be more precise, the area immediately around the Gros Ouvrage de Fermont.

In a three day frenzy, I managed to complete the table, glue lots of polystyrene on top of it, and then cut away most of it again to form the hill that houses the fortress. The plan for March is to model block four and seven, finish the contours of the hill, and sanding everything smooth so I can glue grass mats onto the polystyrene to form the landscape.

    This months...

    Lows:
Having my swamp-modules warp on me. They obviously thought they were the Enterprise...

    Highs:
Somehow managing to complete this table in just three days, despite suffering from a cold.

    Greatest annoyance:
Working for three days straight, in a dusty basement room, filled with polystyrene pellets, wearing a hot and uncomfortably dust-mask, all of this while suffering from a nasty cold...

    Biggest “ouch, that hurt!” moment:
Surprisingly enough, not the moment when the file slipped and took a nice chuck out of my finger. Rather, it was vacuuming the floor. The interaction between the polystyrene pellets, the plastic vacuum-hose, and the synthetic carped produced ungodly amounts of static electricity. I kid you not, I was so charged that I attracted polystyrene pellets from a good five inches away, and I made some really impressive electric arcs whenever I got within a few inches of any form of metal. In the end I resorted to vacuuming in a strange half-crouch, vacuuming with one hand and keeping the other hand on the metal body of the vacuum cleaner itself. And I still had to touch a nearby door handle every thirty seconds or so in order to discharge the static electricity that was building up.

Right here we go first post.

I have no pictures as yet i need to get them on the web somewhere so i can post

    WIP so far:

A scratch built wooden bridge - 95% constructed and partially painted
A Witchfate Tor - Mainly constructed but not painted
A Ruin (using Witchfate Tor spare bits)- Constructed, mostly painted
A fortified wall - in basic construction, awaiting delivery of supplies
Landscape(s) in various states of construction.

Just obtained a large polystyrene box from work and thinking of turning it into a large castle.

Aim this month is to finish ruin and bridge.

    Pictures this weekend hopefully.

Ok I got my piece done. First ever piece completed. yeah for me. I knew this was a good thread to join. Learned some lessons of what to do and not to do. Now only if I did not have to send my Hot foam knife back (due to it not heating up). It might of gone faster for me.

Here's my contribution for February and WIP in march. It's a big-a** precinct building and it's all been scratch-built from cardboard, insulation foam, plaster, plasticard and a whole lot of other stuff as well.

EDIT: Yes, that is the 2nd edition Imperial Guard Codex in the background, and it's awesome!

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders Month 1 (and March's work in progress)

Work with the table is progressing as planned. Today I began construction on the fortress' block four and seven, using templates to cut a rough shape out of polystyrene. I also had to add another block of polystyrene to the top of the hill.

The new hill with the two blocks in place (though not clued down yet).

The two blocks, seven on the left and four on the right.
