Thread: 8th Edition Orc & Goblin Armybook Tactics

Re: 8th Edition Orc & Goblin Armybook Tactics

45pts difference, but what's worse is that the black orc loses it's armed to the teeth when it takes a magic weapon.

I'd rather black orc warlord's be like 10pts cheaper and have the option to take armed to the teeth for 10pts.

In reality though black orc warlords should be 10pts cheaper anyway.

The weird thing though is that the big boss variety is more acceptable. They only went up 5pts from 7th to 8th and got ItP(which is worth a lot less now) and heavy armor in the bargain. Orc big bosses which were overpriced in 7th by 5-10pts, got the 10 pt reduction, which makes it seem more unbalanced than it really is.

The big what were they thinking question is, why did savage orc characters go up so much in cost, when they got nothing new and lost the ability to take mundane lt. armor?

My fluff demands I use a black orc too but nothing wrong counting him a a regular orc.

I also use mainly orcs in my line units and while we aren't as good as night gobbo mobs I haven't the funds or desire to buy boxes of night gobbos.

Just use the regular orc boss...dont think anyone's gonna stick you for it.

People use to stick me for using regular orcs for savages but now you pay the same price for a box of either of them so I think I'm well within my right to use my drunk orcs as savages

I agree that the blorc warboss is overcosted- but if you are going to run one- spend all of your magic item allowance on protection as Armed to the teef is pretty useful-

Something like- armor of silvered steel, talisman of preservation, and the iron curse icon- then place him in a huge horde unit of big unz, or blorcs- not the best use of points but still pretty good-

I have been using a blorc BSB, thrown in with whatever unit has my lvl 4 caster- I don't like taking any chances with animosity ruining my magic phase-

Depends if you've read the FAQ or not

The correct answer is, the spare Skulker goes in the second rank, and then you "make way" with it, pushing a command model to the second rank, in effect you just set them up in the front rank, moving command models to the second rank if you don't have enough room.

As I understand it that isn't possible.

I know the latest faq doesn't allow you to displace characters right off the bat, but you also can't move characters out of base to base with move out of the way.

I would have to disagree - WS7 is great but even better is that I can guarantee his unit is safe from animosity - which has always been my biggest killer. And to have the Warboss doing what he needs to WHEN he wants to is huge! And access to heavy armor is nice as even with a 5pt enchanted shield he'll be 3+ armour save, 45pts for 4+ ward, and I still have 50pts left over to grab a nice juicy magic axe!

I disagree that you should keep Armed to da Teeth by forgoing a magic weapon. I am of the firm persuasion that you need to have at least one character with a magic weapon in your army, and who better to give it to then your warboss?

My personal favorite? The Night Goblin riding the Great Cave Squig. Well, him or the Savage Orc Shaman. Either one works pretty well. Usually my warboss is kitted out for defense, but as I've discussed in another thread, that is a known personal failing of mine.

Re: 8th Edition Orc & Goblin Armybook Tactics

Sooo, anybody want to take apart the list I have been building for an upcoming 2,000 point tournament?

    Grimgor Ironhide (355 points)
Korgum Blackfist, Black Orc BSB, with Banner of Eternal Flame (125 points)
2 Night Goblin Big Boss's with Light Armor/Great Weapon (36 points ea.)
Level 2 Night Goblin Shaman, with Dispel Scroll (105)

40 Orc Boy Big ‘Uns with HW/Shield (360 points)
40 Black Immortulz, with shields (560 points)
    100 Night Goblins with Spears/shields (300 points)
    Doom Diver (80 points)
    Spear Chukka (35 points)
    Total points: 1992

Should I drop 10 Night Gobs and take nets? Should I further downsize the Night Gob unit and take Fanatics? What about making my BSB a plain 'ol orc boy, so I can save 35 points for another Chukka? What else can I do to make this list better, or is there really anything else I need to do?

I'm hopeless when it comes to army building.

Definitely take nets on your night goblins

Give your BSB some defense, talisman of preservation or armor of destiny; put the flame banner on the black orcs or biguns.

Why waste light armor on the big bosses?

You have no where for the shaman to hide.

You're too elite to guard your warmachines.

In a blood and glory type mission you are a dead bsb away from a loss/major point loss.

I'd try to free some points up for some fast stuff like two chariots and/or some Spider/wolf riders.
Not sure if you need the Big'unz as another anvil block, you could kick 'em out and instead take some Savages or more Night Goblin blocks. Definately give the big block full command, one or two fanatics and nets. Reducing in size is not necessary.
For the BSB: Drop the Eternal Flame banner, give it directly to the Immortulz. Instead give the BSB the Talisman of Preservation and Enchanted Shield for a solid 3+/4++ save. He should primarily survive, so defensive equipment is the way to go. Depending where you want to put the BSB, you could drop the Black Orc Upgrade. If he joins the Big'unz or the Night Goblins, then Suppress Animosity is awesome, if he joins the Black Orcs it is totally useless.

Re: 8th Edition Orc & Goblin Armybook Tactics

Has anyone tried an army of 3 Arachnaroks yet?

Goblin Great Shaman - 580 Points
    Book of Ashur
    Magic Level 4
    Arachnarok Spider
    Catchweb Spidershrine

(book and shrine optional if you still want a warboss )

    Arachnarok Spider

    Arachnarok Spider

Sure, it'll take up a bit more than a third of a 3000 point army unless you drop the book and shrine. But the sheer awesomeness...

04:58 would so totally be the face of your opponent

Anywho, has anyone come up against the Rat Box* Skaven army yet? Grey Seer on a bell surrounded by a core of clan rats with 100 strong slave units protecting the front and sides but still within general/bsb range for LD 10 rerollable steadfast. Warmachines liberally scattered within to actually harm the enemy.

Deployed back far enough it can take three turns, more with animosity or small rat pack units to slow down the advance. Then once you get at them theres not much time left to break the ten deep slave units while the Skaven player looses torrents of warmachine and magic into the combats to murder your fighty units.

Of course there are a few scenarios that can screw with this army build but there are more it only helps. That miserable "Fight for the Pass" one for example...

See, this is moy probelm with posting army lists, people always suggest figures I don't own, and then I want to go out and buy them I don't have any Savage Orcs, and neither do I have any more than 100 night gobbos. I hate having a limited collection...
Anyways, my BSB can't join the Immortulz, as according to the rules on Grimgors page of the AB, Grimgor is the only Character allowed in that unit. So yeah, the BSB is going with the Big 'Unz.
Oh, and I don't have to worry about Blood and Glory scenarios; my group uses only the basic Battleline scenario for our tournaments.

So, working with what I have on hand, models wise, here is my (revised) army list.

    Grimgor Ironhide (355 points)
Korgum Blackfist, Black Orc BSB, with Banner of Eternal Flame (125 points)
2 Night Goblin Big Boss's with Great Weapons (34 points ea.)
Level 2 Night Goblin Shaman, with Dispel Scroll (105)

40 Orc Boy Big ‘Uns with HW/Shield (360 points)
40 Black Immortulz, with shields, Banner of Eternal Flame (530 points)
75 Night Goblins with Spears/shields, nets, full command (300 points)
    Doom Diver (80 points)
    Spear Chukka (35 points)

I will probably sacrifice the NG Big Bosses for a unit of 5 Spider Riders. Or maybe I should just scrap Grimgor/the Black Orcs altogether.

I probably should add that I favor a very aggressive playstyle. Just something to keep in mind. I will be testing the above list this weekend, and I will let you guys know how it goes!

Re: 8th Edition Orc & Goblin Armybook Tactics

@Felworth- I think this is the hardest skaven list to beat as it is pure points denial (and I don't see how this type of list can be fun- it has got to be extremely boring with the same result all the time- Skaven win by using dreaded 13th to finish off that expensive elite infantry unit)

Take a unit of river trolls place in front of one of your hordes- your goal is to tie up a slave unit with the trolls- holding the slaves in place through winning by combat- meanwhile your horde unit marches up 1" behind the trolls-

On your next turn use 6 dice to force through Hand of gork (big version) your horde is now inside the box

You can also try to sneak through with wolf riders to eat the machines- unfortunately the 360 degree reach of certain skaven spells may be able to stop this-

The other option is to bring 100ng's, they will beat the slaves (pop them in one round) then you can just push on through into the bunker- (again the key here is Hand of gork- force it through on turn 1 to get your unit right in his face before he can whittle it down 5D6" is long way a march move + 17"= enemy deployment zone)

I won against such a Skaven list once: With my Orc Shaman IF'ing my Savage horde straight behind the Grey Seer's unit. Suddenly, he was not so brave anymore. :P

Well you don't really need that to pop em in one turn. 50-60 goblins and a chariot will accomplish the same for less, which leaves more points to fight the other screening units. Besides that, don't forget our own warmachines and magic. A couple of rock lobber hits will ruin their day and versus this army we have very good odds of hitting stuff and orc magic would do rather well. Single trolls make for interesting weapon team hunters. Etc. If any army can take on that type of skaven army, it's O&G.
