Re: 8th Edition Orc & Goblin Armybook Tactics

I play a all night goblin army, new to playing warhammer, well, I played 4ed, and picked up playing again after a long period of just painting random stuff.

The highest point games I've played are 1000 points, against Empire.
I find that a horde of 50/60 goblins with spears are decent in getting kills against T3 opponents. The odds of a single gob killing something might be small, but the stack up the odds of 40 of them and suddenly the unit becomes a lot more interesting. Sure, they're still no savage orcs with extra choppa, but then again a goblin horde would only cost about 250 points, including nets.

Mangler squigs are lovely, not only in the damage they can do, but the attention an opponent would want to give them is in itself a tactical advantage.

I was thinking of a gimmick list, but aside from theme I'd like to know how effective you think it could be.
I want to fill my list with as many chariots or chariot-like units as possible.

the full 9 wolves, 2 boars, 2 manglers and lead them with Grom the Paunch.
I'm not sure how to fill out core, any thoughts?
Even loosing, I think this could be fun; however, how would you guys use such a list effectively at around 3000 pts ?

Wolf riders are an obvious core filler. Large ranked units of them with spears, armored up with a front rank full of big bosses.

Those wings of chariots can be killers. Combining charges of fully ranked blocks of wolf riders, those triple chariot units with some big bosses worked in there can be quiete devastating. For goblins at least.

Other obvious choices would be arachnaroks, pump wagons, wyvern lords and a goblin lord with good protection and the crown of command riding a gigantic spider. (great cheap tarpitter)

Need for speed greenies can be fun.

Is there a reason for the 2 boar chariots? why not make it 3-

Also, keep things moving fast, pump wagons could be good. As well as an Arachnarok, I would also take a spider or wolf rider horde to fill up the core- if you take stripped down wolf riders you can field enough of them to possible cancel steadfast-

Or just take 50 big unz with the banner of swiftness- the extra 1" to their movement should help them keep up or better yet get there first, so the chariots can do what they do best- add combat res for the win-

So how is the Arrer Boyz horde? People were talking about the old 6th ed plastics in the General forum and that got me thinking that I have a pile of them which might look quite good with leftover Savage Orc bows.

    I've used 30, a poor-man's horde, with a Shaman (well, 29 I guess lol) a couple of times.

I've been underwhelmed by the shooting, and I find that you have to make some significant tactical sacrifices to maneuver such a big unit. If I'm taking up that much frontage on the table, I'd prefer it to be something a little better/harder hitting.

Haven't really done it enough yet to get practiced at it though, so maybe there's a trick to it I just haven't worked out yet.

Oi Warbosses, I'ze gots one of dem questionthingies for youz!

I've been out of the hobby for several years and am now slowly dusting off all my old models. Now I have yet to acquaint myself with 8th edition and the new codex, but I still have a huge pile of models laying around. And I'm a bit lost on what to do with them and need some advice on how to rebuild my horde. Basically, I have

    1 Warboss on boar
    1 Banner Bearer on boar
1 Orc shaman and 2 Goblin shamans
    10 Wolf Riders
    10 Spider Riders
2 blocks of 25 Orc Boyz with 2 choppas and/or shields
2 blocks of 20 Night Goblins with 3 Fanatics
    15 Black Orcs
    1 Boar Chariot
    1 Troll
    2 Spear Chukkas
    1 Doom Diver

What is the current consensus on these units? Is this still a solid army, or are some of these units now considered useless/overcosted? How would you field this army? What would you add or remove? Basically, any advice or comment you have would be greatly appreciated.

I use two units of 30 arrers on the flanks. Choppa is main weapon, but do not tell anyone! They do not see much light troops infront of them. Lately I have added a Warboss with Wizards Hat for extra fun, Ld, Magic and combat. Stupidity? Bah, who cares. Its such a wide unit you can have it within range of BSB.

Not bad, combine the goblins into 1 unit of 40, and the orcs into a unit of 50. Make em big uns if you want to. That would field a balanced list, probably not too powerful, but balanced enough to let you get a hang on the new edition, so you can decide what you want to get next

Warboss on boar: 7th ed hang-over. The armor bump isn't worth the fact that they can be picked out of non-cav units now. Almost never seen any more.

Orc shaman and 2 Goblin shamans: You don't really need that many magic casters. One primary and maybe a secondary caster is all you need, although some greenskin players break the mold with a night goblin shaman spam.

    Wolf Riders: Cheap and effective.

    Spider Riders: Expensive wolf riders.

Orc Boyz with 2 choppas and/or shields: 8th ed is all about killing, so I would go with 2 choppas is possible. Then paint on tatoos to make them savages.

Night Goblins with 3 Fanatics: Great unit, seen in almost every list.

Black Orcs: Great hard hitters who are only out shined by savage orc big uns.

Boar Chariot: Ok support unit. Remember that the riders are str 6 on the charge.

Troll: Speed bumps still have a place in 8th, and I for one am a big fan of the single troll. I'm also a HUGE fan of the troll horde.

Spear Chukkas: Between seeing less monsters, less time to shoot before combat, and now being able to misfire, I don't take these any more. Not bad though if you have 35 extra points.

Doom Diver: More accurate than before, but now knights are rare. I personally save the points for more combat power.

What do typical orc and goblin armies look like these days? I am looking for a destructive force of disorder but know little to nothing of 8th orcs and gobbos.
Yeah, we flew our space church across 500 light years to get to this planet taken over by the orks. Now we're going to drop from orbit in buckets and run out and shoot pistols and hit people in the head with chainsaws. Ultramarines!

This is actually a hard question as you really see a LOT of variation in greenskin lists.

I mean most of them will have night goblins, saveg orc big uns, and black orcs, but really there is no real solid standard list like you might see in other armies.

The lists i see usually follow along one of these lines...

1.Savage orc boar boy death star with fighty warboss, bsb with mork's war banner to shut down enemy items in their deathstar, shaman with shrunken head, get sword of anti-heroes and other tricksters shard in their too. Very strong against other deathstar based armies, leaves you free to run pretty much whatever you want for the rest of the list. Lots of eggs in one basket though vulnerable to heavy shooting and magic.

2.Goblin based lists spamming fanatics or bow/shield common goblins with skulkers. Both kinds also spam night goblin big bosses with great weapons. Big steadfast blocks, fanatics destroy certain lists, skulkers drag out combat longer by being characters targeted separate from unit, big bosses are WS4 S6 A3 on a 20mm base so your anvil units have pretty good killing power even before the spiders, trolls, piggies, etc. hit your opponent in the flank.

3.Big savage orc big 'un block with or without a big black orc block. Warboss and bsb go in one of the units. Don't usually see this build ran full on deathstar, more like 25-40 guys in the big uns and blorks units at most. This is pretty much the "balanced" list as I see it without the obvious weaknesses of some of the others.

    4. 3+ arachnarok spider list with whatever you want for the rest (usually lots of goblins to stand there and be steadfast while the spiders actually kill things). Really hard for some armies to beat; pretty much anyone who can't easily magic the spiders to death or force them to fight a durable combat unit like graveguard with regen will be in trouble. Spiders chew through trash units with pretty much no chance of actually dying themselves, can take on most other monsters, and are decent against smaller elite units.

I'm planning to face wood elfs soon and I wan't to try out Gitilla da hunta and 11 Da Howlers. With BS4 and Quick to shot I will probably put down some expensive unarmoured woodies. That 12 (14) shots a turn. And they can reroll fleeing results.

Have someone used them against T3 armies, and in larger scale (18)

I have used them against V.C but without any usefullness except that Gitillas bow could kill wraiths

I don't think against wood elves would be the best time to use that special character...

Yes WE are soft and squishy and will die easily to your bows, but each one of them have their own bow and will be shooting back...

How can it possibly be 3+ Arachnarok spiders? You need 3000 pts before you can field more than 3, which surely disqualifies it as a "common" list.

    I assumed 1 was a mount.

Then again 3K is standard to some people

To me I found that the biggest thing against 3 arachnaroks was fact that there are better and more dependable options.

Interesting stuff, I like to hear there is plenty of variety. Another question linked to that then, does the army book have any outright dud choices?

Question!!!!! Can fanatics be launched out of buildings? from a unit occupying the building? or do they simply die since they are contacting a building?

    They die.

    Q. If a Night Goblin unit is behind an obstacle or in a building or
other piece of terrain what happens to any Fanatics that are
    released? (p53)
    A. If the Fanatic is released from a point of the unit that is
outside the terrain then it will move as normal. If the point of
the unit it is released from is inside the terrain then it will be
destroyed before it gets a chance to move
