Precinct Omega paints... "Relics" from Tor Gaming

If you've not heard of Relics, it's a new miniatures skirmish game from Tor Gaming with some really weird, cool minis.

Gavin at Tor Gaming has asked if Precinct Omega would have a go at painting some of their miniatures for display and demonstration purposes and sent me some free samples to have a crack at them.

Here are the first three I've assembled:

These are Vaettir Varriers. I'm still chatting with Gavin about how to painting them, but I can report that they're a bit of a sod to assemble.

Those are some cool looking little guys, can't wait to see how you paint them.

On a side note: how small are they? I've been looking for something like that for my Wood Elf army.

A quick update: I took an hour at the end of my working day yesterday to break the back on the first of the Vaettir. Pretty pleased with this, so far, although I'm going to have to think about how to do the wings on the next one. Lots more to do, though. I want to really play with the concepts, as Tor hasn't really fleshed them out, yet.

The idea is that, being an elemental fairy (basically) he's drawing his power from the ground - I was inspired by the rocky, blocky feet compared to the slender and more elegant body. His "loincloth" is actually part of his body.

I like how its progressing. The blending on the wings looks good, and the face is really impressive. Can't wait for more.

So, the first one's all done:

EDIT - Except, having just uploaded this image, I've remembered something important I was going to do and haven't. You'll see what it is when I've finished the next one.

So here's the next Varrier WIP:

And here's the first one, properly finished (with front arc of the base painted blue, for gaming):

Looks great, though that tattoo could use some work. Maybe a second coat, or a highlight?

Having seen it blown up to such enormous proportions in this pic, I have to agree. Looks fine IRL, but a little more attention will just see it off.

Ah, thats a good point. One I tend to forget. Out of curiosity, what size is the model? Not familiar with that type of base to relate it to that.

I like them. They're pretty cool. You've really captured the "evil fairie"-look with that paintjob.

If I understand the Relics background, they're not so much evil as they are driven insane by the rampages of enemies on their territory.

Anyway, I hope to get the Orcnar Drocgars assembled this weekend.

thought I'd jump in here with my two pennies

basically the vaettir saw what the rampaging humans were capable of and decided to sort them out. the spell they concocted back fired and doomed everyone. ( thats the short version anyway! there is a lot more detail) hope thats a bit clearer for now.

The point Im trying to make is the Vaettir like the other races of Relics are neither good nor bad, there are no clear cut good guys or bad guys which is one of the cool things about the game, it all depends on your perspective.

anyway great paint job, looking forward to seeing more

Very impressive. That's a great skin tone you've achieved to make the model look extra cold and menacing.

My only critique would be that the blue base rim distracts from the rest of the model.

Fair point, that. The game requires a division of front and rear arcs and the blue is supposed to indicate the front, but perhaps I can come up with something less distracting.

I'll go back to it when I've finished the other two.

Re: Precinct Omega paints... "Relics" from Tor Gaming

Well, now that Warseer appears to be safe again, here's an update on the Relics stuff:

The Vaettir Varriers are almost finished (well, these two are - I've got a third one that I've only just basecoated). Thanks to feedback from this plog I've altered my design for indicating the front of arc - hope you like the new version!

The guy on the right is finished (I think). The guy on the left is nearly there: I need to do the hilts of his flint knives and his mouth; plus, of course, he'll get some shrubbery on his base (and I need to make some more!).

These, meanwhile, are the Orcnar Docga:

Early days obviously (you can even see where the wash is still drying), but I was impressed with the two-tone colour scheme on the Tor website and wanted to do it homage but with a new twist.

And these, finally, are the Britnan Dragoons!

They're about... four-fifths (?) done. I've copied their colour scheme from Napoleonic-era British Dragoons but given them a bit of armour as a nod to modern armoured "dragoon" regiments. These are really annoying minis, because there are so many cool touches and details that no single camera angle will show off all of them. When they're finished, I'll do a full 360.

In case you're wondering, the one on the left has a wheel at the back, whilst the one on the right has four legs, centaur-style.
