Teacher by Day, War Gamer by Night

    Welcome,

I am a long time lurker that decided to register to start a plog to encourage my painting. I am new to the tabletop hobby world, so I am a beginning painter/converter. Enjoy watching this nerd baby take his first steps!

Armies and Systems that this will be covering.
    - Space Sharks (Count as Deathwing) in 40k
    - Orks and Tyranids in 40k
    - Warriors of Chaos in Warhammer
    - Cygnar (Nemo Jack Heavy) in Warmachine
    - Empire of the Blazing Sun in Dystopian Wars
    - Orcs in Bloodbowl

My Workdesk including Helper Cat Freyja

    My Cygnar

I was bored during my flurry of snow days back in February, so I did what anyone else would do...convert a Blood Bowl army!

    Team Shot

    Blitzers

    Black Orc Blockers

    Linemen

    Thrower

I need a name for the team, but I based the uniforms off of the University of Kansas' (Go KU!) Away jersey.

    Ideas
    1) The University of Krumpin' Squighawks
    2) The New Mork Uge Gits

    Comments?
    - Should I color code the bases with the positions? i.e. (white = thrower)

Here is a photo of my 25 points of Cygnar. This is my first fully painted/based army. Stryker counts as a Journeyman Warcaster since he was Nemo's padawan in the fluff.

    Nemo

Squire - Who glows malevolently because he is powered by the souls of Trollblood orphans. Dr. Orpheus would be most displeased...

Re: Teacher by Day, War Gamer by Night

After playing a few games of Dystopian Wars, I am fed up with the Local FLGS' blue cheese cloth. Last time, I checked waves didn't come in floral print...

Anywho, since I have the day off, I decided to make a quick sea game board for the store.

    Steps to Game Board
    1) Got to Lowes for MDF board 4 X 6 ft
    2) Have the large, burly working-men there cut it for me since I am a wee little sissy boy, who can't cut straight.
    3) ???
    4) Get my paint on.

Two of the panels are hinged together on the underside for easy of transport and I like to drill and screw. These boards form a 4 ft by 4 ft board that seems to optimum for battlebox games in my experience. The other panel is off by its lonesome to add the final 2 ft in length.

I have also sponged on a whitish and greenish blue over the base blue, but you can't see it with all sunshine in this picture.

The instructions for the resin say to pour it, but don't pour it. Pouring it makes it too thick and you can see where it pooled up on my board. It looks much nicer, if you brush it on. Then blot at it with a paper towel to make it look like it has ripples. Although, this blotting makes air bubbles get trapped in it, so you have to blow on them to pop them. The resin gets very sticky and it can only be removed by using rubbing alcohol. If it dries, there is almost no way to remove it. I bought some at Westlake hardware for about $30. This job required 32 oz of the resin. I used way less than the suggested amount since I didn't want an even coat. Here is what it looks like.

Those boats are the awesomest! I really like the colour combination. It is a very daring combo, but it works wonders. It gives it a very regal look, and I guess that is what this fleet is, so great job there! Great water table too!

EDIT: Paint their numbers on their shoulderpads, is what I would do. I personally wouldn't color code, but if everyone you play with does, I would.

That navy is pretty awesome, and the board is one of the best looking ocean boards Ive ever seen! Very nice. Although Im not familiar with the game itself, have you ever considered like adding a small island or something? Dont know if it makes sense to do so with the game itself though.

    Thanks for the comments.

The ships are from Dystopian Wars. The game is based in post-civil war times, where a new element discovered by scientists in an Antarctic base has lead to steampunk tech (robots, jet packs, tesla cannons, and etc.) The game is fun and great for multiplayer.

Plus, it has an "exploding dice" mechanic, where if you roll a 6, you keep rolling until you stop rolling a 6. This can get ridiculous, when throwing 15 dice at a time.

Space Sharks base-coated! 24 Termies, plus Apothecary and Librarian. MAGNETIZED! Magnetizing was painful, but it's fun to play with science.

And look at what came in the mail...

What do you think of this pose? Does it look natural? I want to do something special. It's a blurry pic, but his foot is on top of a Space Marine helmet that I am going to paint in Mantis Warriors colors (Space Sharks hated chapter). Also, I cut three slashes into the helmet with planned blood effects later.

EDIT: For better Tyberos (Count as Belial with LC) picture

    UPDATE

My FLGS is starting Necromunda. I don't like the models/I don't like metal models that aren't Warmachine warjacks. Thus, I bought the Wargames Factory Shocktroopers to be my Van Saar gang. There were some awesome bits in the box and it was quite a deal. I had to use the Cthulhu head. My gang has a fear theme. Thus, there name Capt. Insano's Boogymen.

    Leader

    Heavy with Heavy Stubber

I also finally based some of my tyranids that were the first models that I painted. I have goofy oop "smiley" Carnifexes, thus the googly eyes. They strike terror in hearts of many players and their unblinking eyes have jinxed many dice rolls. This is my count-as tervigon, which explains the green stuff egg sacs.

    Battleshot of the Necromunda gang.

I was playing the scenario, where if you shoot your heavy weapon, on a roll of a 4+ the roof caves in a the game ends. Guess who shot his heavy stubber at the enemy leader turn 2 and brought the roof down?

Worked on the SAG over the weekend. I added some glyphs, metal wire, plasticard, and one very special Warp energy source.

    Still WIP

This is supposed to be a grot smoking a cigar, while waiting to be fired Bazooka-style through the warp.

I love mono-wheeled things, so I threw this little diddy out of spare bits. Count as Nob biker or Warboss on bike?

Remember when I said that I would paint you last?...I lied.

I couldn't wait to paint old Sharky McChainClaws here. I tried some new techniques that I haven't tried before. Mainly the lightning claws and hazard stripes. I am proud of my progress, but I am lost on how to do chapter badges. Print my own decals or man-up and freehand?

    mono-bike is a win!

As for the chapter badges, well, unless you have a simple design you can reproduce easily, the best way to easily make it look good is to use decals. I went the painting way, thinking yea! I'll man-up! Halfway through, I wished I went the easy route...

Still, it is your hobby, so as long as you have fun!

Thanks for the comments. For the Mono-bike, I literally just slapped pieces together that I had cut off when converting or left-over from the Imperial vehicle sprues.

Time to practice freehanding, I guess.

The water table is easily my best work. It also really enhances the gaming experience. Here are some battleshots.

If you can't get some printable transfer sheets, do it freehand.

The best way to go with painting chapter logos is to "dot" the edges and crucial points (as they can be easily covered up) and then filling it up. The space sharks logo is simple enough to execute en masse.

And also here is another simple yet effective tutorial.

    Cheers

Goat: Thanks for the link. Massive Voodoo is a wealth of information.

I decided to try a shot at hightlighting. Did a real simple scab red > badab black > blood red highlight. The model is Little Red Riding Hood from Chronoscope with added bits. She is going to be lil' wizard in a Post Apocalyptic Savage World campaign. Hence, my attempt at glowing eyes, as well.
