"Truth Shall Prevail." Another Empire Log

Oh hallo, I had not seen you there.

Welcome, Hello, Bienvenu.....somthing and Good afternoon.

About a year and a half ago, my family thought it was a good idea to buy me a warhammer fantasy battalion for Christmas. Up untill then, I had been a zealous 40K player, and didn't want anything to do with the square basers.

The army in question was The Empire. And I must admitt, I had been looking through their models for a while. So I wasn't completely unhappy, but didn't really know what to do with 'em.

Out of Boredom, I stuck 'em together, and they ended up, where else, on the shelves and in the ever growing amount of boxes filled with sprues and half finished projects.

But after a while, and a few mock battles with my mates down at the gaming club, I actually started having fun, and getting into Warhammer Fantasy. This all culminated with me being added to our club's "Battle of the Clubs" B-Team as kind of a last resort 4rth player.

This resulted however, in me building, painting and practicing my *rse off, and it proved sufficient. Not a single loss at the tournament ( ok 1 draws and 1 minor win, but still, I ws happy )

Seeing as this year's "Battle of the Clubs" is comming up ( roughly 1.5 months ) I decided to give my Empire an overhaul and a re-vamp, also mainly to get it up to shape for 8th Edition.

Mind you, I really am terrible at finishing armies, because I have the attention span of a goldfish, and I am always boppin back and forth between projects. Hence, my Empire will be a quickshading project, to help me actually get it done again.

But without further ado, here's a quick snapshot of the Forgeworld General, Theodor Brucker ( the dismount version )

So with that, I once again welcome you to my log, and I do hope I can actually manage to keep it up to date this time.

Have fun, enjoy your stay and leave a messege after the beep.

Is that a kind of painting technique/product?

Really liking your general and the muted tones he's painted in. Did you use some kind of matt varnish to finish him off? I haven't seen him before, need to check out forgeworld more!

Cheers guys. Will prolly do some more updates soon as my scratchbuilt War Altar is almost done.

@Tower_Of_The_Stars, Quickshading, or "dipping" as it is generally called, is a technique to get your painting done faster. Most people look down on it, but I don't see why. Its a little less efford then washing models, and I happen to LOVE the muted and earthy tones of the models after.

Only downside is that the model tends to get a bit shiney, so I coated them with Testors Dullcoat, to get rid of the shiney look.

All in all I am pretty happy with him, seeing as he stands a full head taller then your average infantry, I didnt want him to be very ornate. Don't need him standing out more then he already does in my opinion.

Hey there, Bruckner looks great! If you have this mini, you must have the demi-griffon as well right? Well done on painting it... I'm honestly not a fan of dipping, but I could not tell from the picture (although it is generally harder to tell on armour) so the dullcoat seems to work fine there. Show us more, I'd say!

Good to see another (Dutch) Empire army here...

Bruckner looks really good! He should be a fine general for any Empire army... Any idea on what kind of unit he will be leading/joining?

The muted tones look great on an Empire force. I use Devlan Mud to achieve this goal. One or two layers of paint and a coat of Devlan Mud and you're done. Your method gives great result!

I'll be back.. A scratch built War Altar sounds very interesting!
Check out my Mordheim scenery! NOW! I mean... Please... Only if you want to of course...

welcome back dear sir... it will be good to see some of your models here once more.
as i am mostly on here this is a good way to keep an eye on you and perhaps we can keep each other motivated

for starters... the new guy looks great.. he must be a delight to paint..
did you put him on the larger 28 mm base or did you squish him onto the smaller one?

Ditto, I've started to love muted and earthy tones myself, I'm trying to find as many techniques to achieve this as possible before I start my new Vampire Counts army. Would you recommend Testors Dullcoat? Have you experience in how it compares to similar products e.g. the GW Matt Varnish?

Looking forward to seeing the War Alter, especially painted in those muted and earthy colours

Re: "Truth Shall Prevail." Another Empire Log

So many reactions already. This is very motivating friends. Cheers!

@grhino, dullcoat does do a LOT for dipped mini's and tbh, if it weren't for it, I wouldnt even bother.

@Boreas_NL, ah, a fellow countrymen. No, I have not yet decided what unit he will be in. Since I can't get the actuall Bruckner model without the Demigryph, I can't field him as the dismounted version if I am not mistaken. And due to the fact that he comes with an 2.5mm base, I can't proxy him as a regular general either. To be fair, I only got the model because I thought it looked really cool.

@Breazer. Hey Ralf, good to see your still lurking in the shadows of Warseer yourself.

@Tower_Of_The_Stars, yes I have, and to be perfectly frank, Dullcoat makes GW matt varnish look like high end polished stainless steel. In other words, its WAY better.

And to make good on my promise, here are a few snaps of my War altar. It came off the base when I was having it dry, and pretty much fell apart in about 12 pieces. I managed to put it back together, but seeing as the quickshade was already setting, there are a few damaged area's. I still don't know how to fix it, but untill I do, I'm leaving it. I'd rather have it be like this for a bit, then go for a quick fix, that might ruin the end result even more.

    But enough talk, pics!

And the close up of the Priest and his desk:

Hmm, I still notice a couple of moldlines as well. Will have to fix that soon.

I'm going with a purple and yellow colour scheme. Combined with the earth and muted effect of the quickshader ( I refuse to call it "the Dip" ) it gives a nice and grimy effect, perfect for the fluff I have for the army. I will post that later on too, if I can find the actuall document.

Pretty great work! Incredible conversion and painting. What parts does it consists of? I can make out some 40K stuff, but I can't really tell where they come from.
    Cheers

Interesting take on the War Alter, really nicely done. I think I'm going to have to try out some of that dullcoat, love the matt look.

Breazer, shush. I am saving those units for when I don;t paint and still want to look cool. Obviously! :P

@Indreth, the thing is mainly plasticard. Undercarriage is an old Dark Elf Couldren I think. The top is just.....EVERYTHING else I could find and salvage really. The sides are 40K cities of Death indeed.

Very nice looking Alter and Bruckner. Normally I'm not a fan of "dipping" but these look good.

That War Altar looks very good! Inventive use of 40K and Fantasy bits make this amongst the best I've seen so far... I'm a big fan of the Griffons from the Helstorm Rocket Launcher, they are one of the best Empire bits around.

And slightly off-topic... With so many Dutch guys, why don't we have a Dutch thread or something?

Very impressive!! I like that war altar it really does look like a mobile altar unlike Games Workshops strange offering. Great choice of priest and great painting too. I dont care what techniques people use really I have seen some great armies that have been dip... Quickshaded. For me it is all about the overall look, choice of colours, choice of minatures and so on. Lets face it that war altar looks cool no matter how it was painted.

Ostermark eh its a nice place, weathers crap though and noisy neighbours. Glad to see another Empire plog. Boreas do you mean a thread where you have to be dutch to post on it (Dutch Only) or one written in Dutch (I understand it must be difficult not being in your first language)? That would be a shame for all us non dutch because there are so many cool plogs by you guys. Maybe a plog highlighting the great Dutch armies would be an idea.

Anyway back to your army LegendFX it looks great and I cant wait to see more.

Well, in any case, I'd like to invite all the Dutch Empire players, who are currently logging here, so join me in this thread. So Boreas, Breazer, feel free to join me in propagating Empiery goodness. I'm currently persuading a mate of mine to do the same.

@The Yak, cheers man. Its the main conversion of my army at the moment. I'ts not quite Ostermark, but the army will be tied to the province. Its basicly a wealthy family who have angered the Emperor, and has been sent out to populate and set up shop in the Chaos wastes. Hence the grim, barren and rather depressing overall look I am aiming for.

Excellent looking war alter you got there! Nice to see you have you own design but that you incorporate classic elements like the griffon albeit a bit smaller.
    See you at the botc!
