The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 7 (& APR WIP)

Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2010 to August 2011), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you use a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is to be used as the completed work thread for March, up until the 7th. Please only post last month's completed work until the 7th.

On the 8th it will then become the work in progress (wip) thread for April. Feel free to post any wip pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the wip thread, but please keep it wip. Do not post any completed work for April until the next thread opens at the start of May. The next thread will start out as to place the post your completed entries for this month, and after the deadline (initially set as the 7th of each month) will become the next wip thread.

If you have not posted by the 8th, then you will have to use one of your 'Jokers'. If you have failed to post by the 8th and have already used up both of your 'Jokers', then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

    Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately you are now too late! Don't worry though, the Tale of Painters will be starting again later in the year (August/September).

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, last year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to use my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to use them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : If I 'catch up' with my points, can I 'buy back' a 'Joker'?
A : Yes, just let me know in your monthly post if you would like to do this. For example, if you have a target of 200 points per month and have played one of your 'Jokers', you could 'buy back' your 'Joker' if you can manage to make up the 'Jokered' 200 points at some point. This could be from painting 400 points one month, painting 300 points over two months, or just making up smaller amounts here and there (as long as you're back on track).

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced in the last Tale to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the D&D dice roller if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

I'll start off by posting an entry for March. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to me (misterboff).

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 7 (& APR WIP)

    misterboff's Dark Eldar: March 2011 (D6 roll = 2)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 166 POINTS (monthly target: 175 points)
TOTAL TO DATE: 871 POINTS (target to date: 875 points)
    #JOKERS USED: 2#

BACKGROUND/THEME: "Wych Cult of the Blade Denied"
The Blade Denied is an elder Wych House that specialises in the art of using their foe's weapons against themselves. The irony of seeing a warrior impaled upon his own blade is always a favourite of this cult, for it shows that even a weapon cannot be trusted.

    UNIT(S):
    6 Reavers w/Arena Champion and 2 Heat Lances - 166 points

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
Straight from the sprue using only the blank faceplate heads. Do they remind anyone else of the demonstration lass from UK gameshow 'The Cube'?

    PAINTING/BASING:
I'm roughly following the painting guide from WD371, but substituting purple in where necessary. The bases are simply Astronomicon Grey followed by Citadel Snow.

    Silver: Boltgun/Badab/Mithril
    Bronze: Tin Bitz/Devlan/Dwarf
    Black: Chaos/Adeptus/Badab
    Eldar Flesh: Space Wolves+Tallarn/Devlan/SWG+Dheneb/Rotting
    Flayed Skin: Tallarn(+Vomit/Dark)/Devlan/Tau Sept Ochre/Rotting
    Purple: Hormagaunt/Leviathan/Liche
    Blue: Mordian/Asurmen/Enchanted/Ice
    Green: Knarloc/Thraka/Goblin/Scorpion
    Yellow: Iyanden/Gryphonne/Bad Moon
    Orange: MSO/Baal/Vomit/Blazing

    STILL TO DO:
Freehand on the Jetbike canopies (and last month's Hellion Skyboards too).

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: They were much nicer to assemble than the Hellions, and the riders not having exposed faces meant that they were easier to paint too.
Lows: Lack of motivation again really. I painted them quite quickly when I was in the mood (this past week!), but think my losing streak may be a factor. Hopefully I'll pick up a few more victories and that will spur me on.

    NEXT MONTH:
Now that I've finished my Hellions and Reavers, I'm going to add yet more Wyches...

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 7 (& APR WIP)

    Irondog's Orks (and Grey Knights)

Total Painting for March '11: 330 points (135 of Orks / 195 of Grey Knights)

Total Army Size: 1675 points (Orks - 1035 pts / Grey Knights - 640 pts)

I adjusted the points for my Grey Knights slightly to account for the point changes in the new codex.

    Die Roll: 3

    Units:
I've got a double feature going this month, half Orks and half Knights. The gang at my local store got the new Nemesis Dreadknight two weeks early. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse. If agree to paint the model up for their display case, I get to keep it after the release date arrives. Sounds good to me.

On the Ork end of things, I've been wanting to build a custome Ork Biker Boss for quite some time. But it couldn't be just any boss, I had to make the bike something really special...

... so I decided to build an Ork version of the Bike from Akira. Yup, I'm certifiably nuts.

    Conversions:
The Nemesis Dreadknight is pretty much straight from the box, with a couple of mionor tweaks to the arms and legs of the pilot to get the stance a bit more dynamic, and have it match the actual Dreadknight chassis.

The Biker Boss, on the other hand, was a massive custom job. You can check out the project log for the 'Akira' Biker Boss here.

    Painting:
The standard painting schemes for each of the armies have been pretty well detailed in previous months. I followed both methods for the respective models to have them match the rest of the army.

The only 'new' thing I did was paint a blue effect on the sword for the Dreadknight. I started with Regal Blue, then highlighted with Ultramarines Blue thinned with water along the edges. I kept adding Skull White, bit by bit, to the watered down Ultramarines Blue to get lighter and lighter tones to keep highlighting until I was happy with the result. Now that I see how it looks on the model, I may have to go back over the rest of the weapons in the army and duplicate the effect. Thank god a Grey Knight army is small. It would suck making a change like that to my Orks.

    Basing:
Standard styles for each army, but I did add some slate and a small skull to the Dreadknights base to make it more interesting. That flight base really sucks on it's own.

As far as colors: Bestial Brown followed by drybrushes of Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone for my Orks. Chaos Black, with drybrushes of Codex Grey and Fortress Grey for the Knights. The Grey Knights also get some static grass on them.

    Still to Do:
The Orks are looking pretty good for the tale and only another 300 or so points and I'll be done with the Knights as well. It's a good thing I've double up for the past few months and banked some points, as I may have to take a break from painting my own models for a bit. I've got some heavy duty commission gigs and work for some other folks over the next month or two.

I'll post pictures in here of what I'm working on, even though they won't add to my totals.

    PICTURES

    First up is the Dreadknight.

    A close-up of the pilot

Up next are shots of my Warboss on the 'Akira' Bike

And a couple of 'Army Shots' of the models I've painted for the Tale thus far.

The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their own turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! we see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude. - Uthan the Perverse, Eldar Philosopher

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 180 points

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
Blood Angels. Mostly units I had lying around. This project is to make sure I paint the terminators from the space hulk box.

Epistolary, terminator armour with storm bolter - 180 pts
Dreadnought, plasma cannon, storm bolter, extra armour - 130 pts

    Brother Corbulo - 105 pts
Death company dreadnought, Blood fists with melta and storm bolter - 125 pts
Scout squad (5), locator beacon, heavy bolter - 110 pts

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
Librarian from the space hulk game, straight out of the box. Because of the terminator armour I decided it would be an epistolary.

    STILL TO DO:
Freehand on his right shoulder pad.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs:Great model with a lot of character and detail.
    Lows: Nothing much.

    STILL TO DO:
    Finish off the bases.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: More daylight means more painting getting done, I've already made progress on next month's batch. And I think the kill markings on the Vendetta have turned out OK.
Lows: Already expanding the army before it's finished!

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 7 (& APR WIP)

It's been a hectic month in terms of 40k this month. Managed to get some painting done as well as get a dozen games in. I also came away with the Best Painted Army award at a 40k tournament which was awesome.

I'll be adding a few more pics next week (along with an army shot) when I've picked up some more batteries for the cam.

Mini77's Dead Suns Space Marines and Imperial Guard: March 2010 (D6 Roll = 6)

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 575 points
    TOTAL TO DATE: 2842 points

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
DIY marine chapter called the Dead Suns and Cadian Imperial Guard.

    UNIT(S):
Librarian (1), Force Weapon, Hand Flamer, Jump Pack - 135 points
Storm Raven (1), TL Plasma Cannon, TL Multi Melta, Extra Armour - 215 points
Assault Marine (1), Meltagun, Bolt Pistol, Jump Pack - 28 points (pics to be added later)
Imperial Guardsman (7), Lasgun, Krak Grenades - 42 points
Lukas The Trickster (1), Plasma Pistol, Wolf Claw - 155 points (pics to be added later)

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
Librarian is the standard metal model with a hand flamer sourced from the Death Company kit, as are bits of the Assault Marine. The Storm Raven is basically built to the instructions. The Guardsmen are a mixture of standard Cadian Shock Troops bits, Command Squad bits and Heavy Weapon crew parts.

    STILL TO DO:
Mostly done. Assault Marine needs basing and the Storm Raven needs the pilot completing before a final varnish. Lukas is finished, but I still need to take a photo yet.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Winning Best Painted. Made my weekend. I also enjoyed painting the Imperial Guard. I'll be fleshing them out over the next few months. They might even be my main focus for next year's Tale?
    Lows: None really.

    NEXT MONTH:
I don't know. Whatever I say I always end up doing something different.

Zark the Damned and the aggressive expansion of Waaaagh Kargrak: March 2011

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 140 Points
    TOTAL TO DATE: 2211 + 140 = 2351 Points

BACKGROUND/THEME: Waaagh Kargrak is a largely Goff Tribe currently undergoing aggressive expansion into Imperial space following the Green Kroosade.

This month, we are joined by a rabble of Snakebites!

    UNIT(S):
20 Boyz with Nob, Bosspole, Eavy Armour, Uge Choppa = 140pts

BUILD/CONVERSIONS: Most of the unit is simply assembled from the fantasy Orc Boyz with spare Slugga arms - Nob is converted from a Black Orc with the head from a 40k Big Choppa plus a holstered slugga.

    PAINTING/BASING:
Light Brown clothes: Hammerfall Khaki (P3) with Devlan Mud wash

NEXT MONTH: Hopefully paint up a new Warboss and maybe Tankbustas

NOTE: Unit is painted in 2 slightly different schemes (alternating the top and pants colours) so can be split up into 2 mobs of 10 - or expanded individually in the future. (hence the mini-nob in the unit made from the regiment champion).

    PICS:

    Uh-oh, (un)civil war!
Zark not believe in democracy. We go left!

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 7 (& APR WIP)

    Perplexiti’s Space Wolves: 2010 (D6 roll = 4)

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 50

    TOTAL TO DATE: 1166

    JOKERS USED:0

    BACKGROUND/THEME: Ragnar Blackmane’s Great Company.

UNIT(S): Heavy Bolter Razorback for the smaller Grey Hunters.

BUILD/CONVERSIONS: Pretty much the stock 3rd Ed model, although I did mount both bolters on one turret as I think it looks better that way.

PAINTING/BASING: Basically the same as the power armored guys. Fenris grey base, drybrushed with shadow then space wolves grey. Chainmaoil washed with black then drybrushed with chainmail again.

STILL TO DO: I do want to dirty/damage it up a bit, I’m going to try out that sponge weathering method, but I want to practice it a bit first.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No lows again, I enjoy painting the older minis. Although I’m feeling a little unsatisfied about my painting so I might try something a little cleaner for the next vehicle. I’m going to have to try this highlighting lark, I’ve never liked the way it came out when I’ve tried it, but it’s gotta be done.

NEXT MONTH: Probably a small tank with a big gun.

    Razorback:

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 7 (& APR WIP)

    Hi there,
also i've already painted more than i thought i want to go on and possibly manage to paint the whole
2nd company till the end of the year! So for this month it's mainly another tactical squad and some bits.

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 210 POINTS
    TOTAL TO DATE: 2.355 POINTS

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
    Astartes Chapter: Space Sharks,
    Crimson Fists.
    UNIT(S):
    1 Space Shark Tactical Squad
    1 Space Shark Dreadnought base
    1 Crimson Fist Terminator sergeant

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
    Not worth mentioning.

    PAINTING/BASING:
Most colours have 3 stages, either basecoat/highlight/wash or basecoat/wash/highlight.
    Metal: Chaos/drybrushed Boltgun/Badab
    Black: Chaos/Regal Blue
    Grey: Charadon/Codex/Fortress/Badab
    Sand: Bubonic Brown/Bleached Bone/Flesh Wash
    Red:Mechrite/Blood/Blazing Orange/Badab
    Yellow: Sunburst/White

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: I’ve painted something! (…ok, big deal I hear you say, but you don’t know her!)
    Lows: None

    NEXT MONTH:
Well I started the last tactical squad of Space Sharks for the 2nd company and also continued on the
3rd Space Sharks Dreadnought and hope to find enough time to get them done!

    And here the pics:

He will be used mainly as captain, but also in games, where i will divide the terminator squad, as sergeant.

Finaly managed to paint the base after more than a year that i had this dreadnought laying around!

And another squad of my beloved Beakies!
    protego et servio
    my ongoing Space Marines conversions:
    Space Sharks, Crusaders and more

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 7 (& APR WIP)

Dark Eldar 1500 points: March 2010

MONTHLY TOTAL: 166 POINTS (monthly target: 150 points)
    TOTAL TO DATE: 808 POINTS
    JOKERS USED: 2

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
the Kabal of the Bloody Tongue

    UNIT(S):
    Haemonculus Ancient with wargear (115pts)
    Helliarch with wargear (51pts)

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
All models are straight from the box.

    PAINTING/BASING:
I want my Dark Eldar to have a neon/Tron feel to them.
The armour is mostly dark blue (Necron Abyss) with light blue (Ice Blue) highlights. Some plates are painted silver.
Glyphs and hair are bright green (Scorpion Green) highlighted to white.
I'm painting the Dark Eldar's skin as I would bone. Dheneb Stone base with a Devlan Mud wash. Highlighted with more Dheneb Stone up to white.
The bases are bits of slate and sand. The slate is painted Codex Grey and drybrushed with Fortress Grey. The sand is painted Snakebite Leather and drybrushed with Dheneb Stone and then given a wash of Devlan Mud. Finally I added some static grass.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
    Highs: Loved painting the Haemonculus!
    Lows: None.

    NEXT MONTH:
Filling in the units now, maybe some work on the Harlequins.

    Pudsey098 Evil Sunz Orks : March 2011 (D6 Roll = 3)

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 315
    TOTAL TO DATE: 1184
    JOKERS USED: 2

    UNIT(S):
    Kommandos - 140
    Battlewagon with Supa-kannon – 175 (IA8)

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:

The Kommandos are all based of the Assault on Black Reach orks (including the nob) with the FW Kommando upgrade set and the odd arm swap and wrist re-position to get away from the stock position they all have.

The Battlewagon is pretty much straight out of the box except for the slight change to the front to allow a big shoota without impeding the supa-kannons movements, and a small cage at the rear to stop the ammo falling out! The supa-kannon is from FW.

    PAINTING:

The battlewagons armour and the kommandos have been painted in the same style as previous mentioned in the tale.

For the kommandos I choose to have all their metal painted in a rust effect to try and distinguish them from the rest of the horde, basically a combination of Scorched Brown and Blazing Orange. I rather like the idea of a kommando months out and about in the rain getting rusty fits for me rather than them sitting at home re-painting their armour red once a week.

    STILL TO DO:
The supa-kannon is missing its crew.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs : Kommandos came out better than expected and to me don’t look like AoBR basis set.
Lows : Due to work only finishing about an hour ago!

    NEXT MONTH:
Not sure as every month I promise one thing and delivered another, will be praying to mork for guidance I think!

Looks like I am jokering for this month. I have hellhound/banewolf like 85% painted, but its only 130 points and I really wanted to get some infantry done etc. So I will post some WIP's soon and post double points next month. Sound good guys?

OK, just finished assembling my Tankbustas! Now to decide whether to paint em as Deathskulls or Bad Moons... (leaning towards 'skulls)
Zark not believe in democracy. We go left!

    Comment time!

@Irondog: The Dreadknight is awesome, and you've got the pilot's pose just right. As for your Biker Boss, wow! He definitely means business and the Bike looks like a great 'Kustom' job. I love the 'SHOE' logo too.

@biginbelgium: Your Librarian looks amazing. All the little details look great, and his pose kinda matches that of your Dreads.

@bighceese76: Good work on getting all of your Basilisks finished. As an Ork and Dark Eldar player, my pants would need changing if I faced all three of them!

@djc: Lovely work yet again. Your Veteran's look great and once again I love all the little Chaos details.

@Mini77: Lots of great work from you this month and congrats on winning the painting award. I really enjoyed painting my Cadians, and yours look fantastic.

@Zark the Damned: Your mob for this month conveys the Snakebite feel very well, and the Spears are a brilliant touch. Also, I'm biased towards Deathskulls...

@perplexiti: Nice work on the Razorback. The turret conversion looks very agressive, and suitably 'Space Wolfy'.

@Vimes: Good work once again. The Imperial Fists Captain is rather nice (not too 'blingy'), and the Dread base is very characterful too.

@Fanny Crowbar: Brilliant work as usual. I love the blue straps on the Helliarch, and all the different colours on Urien's vials.

@pudsey098: I was considering getting the Kommando kit and a Supa-Kannon to go on a Big Trakk, and this month's entry is certainly encouraging me! I think the Battlewagon look mean even though there's no Deffrolla or Ram, and the Kommandos don't look Black Reach at all anymore.

    @razormasticator: Sounds fine to me!

Well done everyone who's posted so far. If everyone else could try to post in the next couple of days that would be great.

I've had quite a good start to this month - I basecoated and washed a Hekatrix, and will hopefully get him dryrushed and finished in the next day or two. Then on with the rest of my Wyches...
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

    Comments:

misterboff; Mean looking jetbikes, your army is looking ace. Hopefully you get your motivation back - painted minis always perform better!

Irondog; Wow - the Akira bike is jaw dropping. Superb.

biginbelgium; Excellent work - love all the detailing.

bigcheese76; I wasn't planning any artillery for my army, but you're making me want some now! Good work.

Mini77; Great stuff - I particularly like the libby and your guard.

Zark the Damned; I love the fact you've used the fantasy orcs - makes a characterful unit.

perplexiti; Nice imposing looking razorback - I like the chunky turret. Good work

Vimes; Nice work as per usual. I love the wounded marine on your dread base.

Fanny Crowbar; Sterling work - I really like the sunken, hollow look you've achieved on the haemonculus' face.

pudsey098; Great battlewagon - suitably weather beaten. Your commandos look ace as well - I particularly like the goggles.

Oh and misterboff, may I please have my joker back? I did try and ask nicely!

You did ask nicely and I completely missed it - my bad! I've removed your Joker now, so problem solved.

Hey misterboff, could you up my total to 2K please, I've been getting more done than I thought I would.

    Comments time again!

    Page 1:

    @misterboff: Really nice looking DE.

@Irondog: Great dreadknight, and awesome orks, where'd that akira bike come from?

@biginbelgium:Those space hulk minis sure are cool, and yours looks fantastic.

@bigcheese76:Roll out the guns eh mate? Good work, and a bit intimidating too...

@djc:Really nice work man, the kill markings look really good too.

@Mini77:Great stuff mate, so clean. It'll be good to see the pilot in the raven too.

@Zark the Damned:Awesome use of the orc kit, it's cool you can mix and match them.

@Vimes: Superb beakies, I really like the helmet stripes for some reason. The dread base looks great too. Just one question, I may have missed the post with the reason but why is the termie yellow?

@Fanny Crowbar: Awesome mate, looks great. The colours are precise and nice and bright.

@pudsey098: Fantastic work man, those kommandos look superb, if you hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have noticed they were black reach orks.
