Greetings,
Were there ever any rules for Pirate fleets (Undead or otherwise) in Man O' War?
I don't recall any, but I would be interested in seeing any lists that may have existed.

Not as far as I know,
The original pirates were included in the box set only and had the stats of basic wargalleys but the CJ ran a few MoW articles so something might have snuck in.
There might well be a few fan lists on the web, I have one I wrote which aimed at boarding and capturing for extra points. The ships had less cannon than others but more crew for the fighting. I also expanded the Special Character ships from the one squadron that was available.

The basic rules (as said above) allowed 'Pirates' to fight the Empire... but the 'Pirates' were just the same. I have everything relating to MoW, so I'll make sure, but I'm pretty sure that outside of the basic Pirate list, and the renegade Nuln fleet for hire, there weren't any.
With that said, you could easily put together a Pirate/Renegade Nuln/Norse fleet...

I wrote a campaign game a long time ago called Man O' War Pirates. You would fight battles and get gold and buy more ships and crew. Kinda like Necromunda for MoW.
Wish I still had a copy.
I think the best way to approach a pirate fleet would be to use the bretonnian fleet list and merely paint the ships in a more fitting scheme, perhaps replacing buccaneers with war galleys as you see fit.
Generally pirates are portrayed in ships similar to the Bretonnian style "age of sail" ships.
Digging through the hard drive, here was the beginning of my effort, placing more emhpasis on the capture of enemy vessels. In the golden age of piracy, pirates would strip down ships to pack in more crew and make them faster.
Therefore many of these options do just that. Pirates should also IMO gain more points for capture rather than sinking. A convoy scenario will also be a given.

The only extra "Official" thing was that Pirates were included in the Allies table (originally in White Dwarf 163, but also reprinted in a supplement I believe), mostly so that they could be used as allies by other fleets, but they could also be the primary fleet. They could ally/be allied with:
- Dwarfs: No
- Elves: No
- Dark Elves: Yes
- Orcs: Yes
- Chaos: Maybe
- Chaos Dwarfs: Maybe
- Empire: No
- Bretonnians: Maybe (!)
- Skaven: Maybe
- Norse: Yes
And I like your fleet list Rob: how well playtested is it? I also think it would be great to make it much more "ragtag", representing an imbalanced gathering of whatever pirates were in a certain area by removing all the minimum limits.
No compulsory Man O' War would make them play differently from other fleets and also tie in with the pirate fleet from the box.
I was going for a fleet in themselves (Sartosaesque) with the Pirates of Reknown being the Dogs of War Equivilent hireable by any other fleet but then again, why not the other squadrons.
Not playtested at all. It's very difficult to find players for, well anything not Core GW round here at the best of times and playing a solo game, even to test rules, feels very...........sad and disheartening.

The Pirates of Legend thing is a great idea (and a logical extension of Schmidt's Renegades) – I wish I'd thought of itYou could actually take it even further and say that besides the core ships (Corsairs, Galleys, Sloops & Longships) pirates can buy a certain (limited) number of ships from any fleet, representing other pirates from exotic parts.
And I know what you mean about playtestingI'll try to test a slightly altered version with my brother when I go home & let you know how I get on.
I also dug up this little pirate related gem from White Dwarf 348 about the release of two pirate Warhammer Collector's Range minis (with links to them on the website & the crew from there too):
Sartosan Pirate Captains
SARTOSAN VAMPIRE
“The pirate captains of the Free City of Sartosa are the scourge of the oceans, and none are more feared than the Undead Lords who ply their bloody trade and attack innocent seafarers without warning or mercy.
This great sculpture by Mark Harrison represents just such an Undead pirate lord.”
PIRATE CAPTAIN OF SARTOSA
“Sartosa is the city of pirates, each vying to become the most notorious, feared and wealthy sea-dog to sail the seas, so that one day they can challenge to become the next Pirate Prince!
This miniature, sculpted by Mark Harrison, represents one of the flamboyant captains of Sartosa.”Pirate of Sartosa
“All pirate captains need an able crew, though not all can afford the best. Such concerns are beyond the Vampire pirates of Sartosa, however - all they need do is slaughter someone else's crew and raise them into Undeath to do their nefarious bidding.”
Yes those models were about the time of the Lustria campaign and the Zombie Pirate list in WD.
I did bash together some ideas for Luthor Harkon and his ghost ship using a hellhammer cannon to represent Queen Bess. I might go back to those. This all came out of my attempt at a Dogs of War fleet which was a core of wargalleys with a 1/wargally squadron pick from monitors, wolfships, longships and hawkships but it didn't seem right, so I went pirate side instead.

BigRob, I very much like your Pirate Fleet List! Well done!
It is certainly the most comprehensive attempt at building a pirate fleet I've witnessed for MoW.
Kind regards,
Hubman
Thankyou, It still needs a bit of work and a special rule for bonus victory points for capturing rather than sinking.

IIRC crew that captured a vessel from another fleet, for instance Bretonnian crew capturing an Empire Wargalley, couldn't sail their new acquisition, even if their own ship was barely afloat. Scuttling was their only option. Maybe pirates could get an exception to that? Pirates are able to sail and operate any ship they capture?
Kind regards,
Hubman
That would certainly make things tactical, quickly capture that Helhammer then turn it on its comrades
Might have to make a few exceptions, no nicking a Black Ark or Winged Terror and legging it.

Any pirate captain that manages to take a Black Ark by boarding deserves a reward!
Would you use a counter based crew system at all similar to the Skaven/Norse?
Well currently the idea was to have a regular crew but with more of them. The pirate ships have reduced cannon power but greater crew strength. Even the pirate longships would have normal crew but be able to make use of the fighting platform/shallow draft rules.
