Thread: Tactica: Tomb Kings 8th Edition Book

Re: Tactica: Tomb Kings 8th Edition Book

Lots and lots of arrows (my 3k list runs 2 blocks of 20 archers, 7 chariots, and 7 horsemen, meaning a well placed smiting bubble can generate 82 arrows in a single shooting phase). Casket is also good, or killing blow to the face off of Tomb Guard (cursed blades being cast if I think I need to rely on killing blow). Other than that, avoidance is a good strategy... if I'm going to get stuck in combat with it, then I'm likely to feed it a tarpit of skeletons and chuck the 5+ ward incantation...did this this afternoon against Wood Elves... 40ish Tomb Guard, or whatever was left after a fight with Treekin, overran and got flank charged by Orion and Dryads. Dumped protection on them, and when we had to pack up 3 rounds of combat later there were still 20-odd left, and my king was near his gunline flaunting his death mask, letting the casket go nuts.

Necropolis Knights are also a reasonable bet, and chariots if you can get them into a flank, deal damage with impact hits, and break them on the charge.

I find Sephulcral Stalkers great for dealing with high armour saves, sure you are wounding a lot of stuff on sixes but they can chuck out a load of hits.

If I ever get enough Sphinxes, I want to try this 2500 list:
    Tomb King
    Great weapon
    Khemrian Warsphinx
    Fiery Roar
    Lich High Priest
    Level 4
    26 Skeleton Archers
    23 Skeleton Archers
    3 Skeleton Charriots
    Full command
    Banner of Swiftness
    20 Archers
    Khemrian Warsphinx
    Fiery Roar/Envenomed Sting
    Necrosphinx
    Envenomed Sting
    Casket of Souls
    Necrosphinx
    Envenomed Sting
    Khemrian Warsphinx
    Fiery Roar
    3 Necropolis Knights

That's five T8 sphinxes and a lot of breath weapons to be used in combat

Why not downgrade the nearly naked king to a prince to save points. No point in a king vs a prince on top of the cat if he isn't going to have over 50 points of gear

Good thinking. I have swapped the king for a Prince, and with the spare points upgraded the NecroKnights to another Warsphinx

I love the sphinx spam lists, but they are (money wise) very expensive.

    2 Questions:

    1) Are they competitive?
    2) Are the fun to play against?

I would be worried that the list is one that people don't want to play against because I could see it having a tendency to either win or lose big depending on what your opponent brings to the table.

Sphinx spam combined with a chariot unit with golden mask king is very competitive.

Fun is another matter and really depends what they have. Usually at best an opponent can just hope for a slow grind win.

I personally would love to run or face a sphinx spam list. Seems really fun to play.

Hell, if you went magic light you could fit a king and a prince both on sphinxes

Meh, sphinx spam is all fun and games until you and your opponent realizes that your King's gone and so is the list (magic and C.R also laugh in the face).

Frankly, I think you need a few chaff units and a block for steadfast.

Here's a battle report using no less than 6 sphinxes against O&G

Re: Tactica: Tomb Kings 8th Edition Book

Hey guys I've had a couple of games with TK and I'm liking their style, however, I suffered a reasonably large loss against VC, mainly because I couldn't break through his Crypt Horrors I charged in 6 chariots (albeit without a flaming banner) and a colossus in the flank, both units had smiting on them and I managed to kill two and they lost one through crumble, but they killed two chariots and I got flanked by 50 ghouls next turn.

The only thing I think could deal with tarpits are TG but as Crypt Horrors are MI, KB doesn't have any effect.

    Anyone have any ideas?

A hero Mage of light (the missles will at least make your VC guy to use his dispel dice)
    Hierotitan
    Skull Catapult with smighting
    Chariots with flame banner.

Don't think you can cast Smiting on Catapults now, Fox....

    Just to add on:

    Casket of Souls
    Ushabti, maybe (WS3 S4 T5 vs WS4 S6 T4)
    Sepulchral Stalkers
    Necropolis Knights

Cheers for the help guys, the problem is I had a Light lv2, a Hierotitan, Casket and Stalkers (albeit late ones).
I always saved 4-6 dice to cast light of death so I didn't have many options to rule the magic phase, maybe I should I just given my chariots flaming, it was only my second game so I'll try something this week.

I've been taking three Necro. Knights and thinking about taking the unit size up to six but...

The way the rules are worded, the monstrous cavalry get the bonuses of monstrous infantry rules, but it does not specify the monstrous support rule (which is a separate ability listed in the monstrous infantry entry.)

Do monstrous cav only get one support attack? Most everyone in my LGS think it's three support attacks but we can't find anything to rule for our cause.

You only get the support attacks from the riders, not the mounts (lame, but that is the rule). The reason to take the unit up to 6 is so that if you lose one before your initiative, you still get full attacks back (ie lasting power).

Re: Tactica: Tomb Kings 8th Edition Book

Im not so fond in the sphynx spam. I got my TK army with 3 sphynxes and I have a hard time making it works (though Im achieveing it ). Sure, it can be related to the fact that I often face empire and ogres, but really, against cannons armies you are giving away so many points and so fast that is hard to deal with it. Dwarfs can go into that cathegory as well. Add to that that a lizardmen army with a regular load of skinks can be a pain in the ass also. Dark elves with repeater bolt thrower can make saturation fire in the sphynxes and the have decent chances as well...

Don´t get me wrong, Im not saying it can´t work. In fact, if your rival doesn´t have the tools to take down the sphynxes, he´s going to get a big headache. But at the end of the day, they have "just" 5 wounds, a lucky shooting volley/cc phase and you can have it down or severely crippled. And with so many of them, you dont have enough magic to heal them all, or move them all, or buff them all... I´d call it a tricky pony indeed
