    DAEMONIC INCURSION! [Plaguebearers Complete]

I've been playing Daemons since about the time their codex first came out... but I haven't finished painting my army. I can list the usual excuses of university and work and so on and so forth, but in the end I could have found the time if I'd wanted to.

Anyway, I've started painting a bit more regularly recently and have at this point got about 1000-1200 points of daemons painted. That, however, is about 800-1000 points short of where I'd like to be. Hence this log to keep me motivated to carry on.

Most Recently Completed: Daemon Prince of Nurgle

    Army Status [Complete/In Progress/Unstarted]

    Herald of Khorne on Juggernaut
    6x Bloodcrushers
    4x Flamers
    20x Bloodletters
    1x Daemon Prince of Tzeentch
    1x Soul Grinder
    10x Plaguebearers
    1x Bloodthirster
    1x Daemonprince of Nurgle

    1x Flamers

    Fateweaver
Anything else I decide I want to paint

Here are a few pics of some of the completed models. I may post more such pics in time.

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

Currently in progress are some plaguebearers which are the first real conversion/adaptation of other models into the army as yet. There are two reasons why I didn't just use the actual plaguebearer models which are:

    1. They're metal, making them harder to transport, move and maintain.
    2. They look like crap, at least in my opinion.

So I set about looking for something to use as a base model for them. I needed something that was solidly built (can't have scrawny S4, T5 FNP guys) and had primitive looking weapons/armour. In the end I settled on WHFB Savage Orks.

I decided I want to make changes that were too drastic and in the end settled on three changes.

    1. I sliced of their heads from the nose up and put in a single eye and a single horn.
    2. The stone work spears of the savage orks had their hafts mostly removed to make the weapons into things that could honestly be called plagueSWORDS. With the exception of a guy or two with axes.
    3. With a heated nail I melted pustules onto some areas of open skin. Always in triangular groups of 3 as befits the mark of Nurgle.

Anyway, here are the results (unpainted)

And the special models of the unit.
From Left to Right: Herald/Noxious Touch Guy -> Icon Bearer -> Musician

There is one more guy than shown in these pics. He's the colour test model and is currently half painted. When he's done I'll post some pictures of him.

    Nice idea for the plaguebearers.
How hard or easy was the greenstuffing?
Maybe some boils or lesions greenstuffed on as well?

    Thanks, guys.

beef5570 - The green stuffing wasn't that hard actually. I did it in two stages, putting the eyeball and horn into place first. Once those had hardened properly it isn't difficult to put in eye lids and fill in the back of the head.

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

So, the colour test model is done and in general I'm happy with the way he turned out. I decided to forgo the normal gribbly look of plaguebearers in favour of something a little more ethereal (I think that's the word I'm looking for...) on the body of the daemon - I have a plan or two on how to improve that on future models. For the clothing and armaments I went for rusted metal and rawhide, I quite like the way that turned out.

Anyway, tell me what you think.

Those plaguebearers look very nice, maybe you could alter the shield by adding nurgle icons?
All in all cool stuff, keep on working.

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

I like that thought, harlekin. I might go ahead and do that with some of them. I think the shields that are made of bone will do fine left the way they are, but some of the shields with glork/mork/pork/whatever-the-orky-god's-names-are could do with a little extra nurlgification.

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

I think it would be good to use some other colour than green, since they're made from orcs you should try to get as far away from orcy green as possible.

If you have access to some empty left hands (marauders or ghouls maybe?) I think that would be better than shields or extra weapons, since plague bearers only have one weapon.

The bases are really good, and the crushers almost makes me want to buy some models again and begin on a new army (miss my old one )

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

So it's been almost a week since I posted anything here and that just won't do. Sadly the plaguebearers are going slowly for various reasons, hopefully they'll be far enough along for a meaningful update by the end of the weekend.

For now though, some Flamers to pass the time.

I was planning to do a battle report with photo's to post here... but my games last night just weren't worth the effort... I stopped taking pictures 2 turns into the first game. I played 1750 games against blood angels and necrons - both my opponents were very, very good (the BA player is the current regional champion).

I may have lost either or both games anyway... but in the end it didn't matter who I was playing. My luck was simply horrendous. I got the wrong half of my army in both games. I lost multiple units to 10+ inch DS scatter. My opponents both made 95% of their saves. And I rolled more 1s and 2s than the other 4 numbers combined.

Even so I managed to kill about half my opponents' armies each time. In the end, though, I got schooled twice in a row on the same night. Such is life. I win significantly more games than I lose so, meh, some nights just go that way.

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

Don't take it to seriously, I played not very often and due to the number of games (not even a dozend) I have to admit I lost all (And the game vs. Necrons was a tough one!).

I mean, don't stop with painting^^ - the fire demons look great, the contrast is really striking!

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

So I was about to sit down and start painting for the evening and remembered that I'd intended to put an update on here by the end of the weekend. I figured it'd be best to do it before start as once I get going I'm unlikely to stop until I decide to go to bed and then I won't feel at all like taking pictures and posting and so on and so forth.

Anyway, here are the plagebearers about half done. All the tedious work of getting the basic colours in place is pretty much done. Tonights job is to now differentiate between the bone and flesh parts of their clothing/armour/equipment - all of which is currently red. After that there is some highlighting and toning to be done on the actual bodies of the daemons then the metals need to be rusted. Lastly there are the bases.

All in all, four or five night's work if I work properly every night... so I'll be done in a week and half... probably. Enough rambling, though, here are some pictures. Sadly not of the same picture quality as before... normal photo taking place is occupied... and its night.

    The lot of them

    And some close ups.

    The Musician

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

So my plaguebearers are complete so here are a few quick pics. I'll try and take some more soon, with natural light rather than flash photography. For now though:

    And the whole squad together.

Comments and Criticisms welcome as always.

Next are some more flamers that I'll pick up on Tuesday when I go to warhammer night at the local gaming shop. Will also try to post a battle report if I get a game in.

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

Sorry to say but they just look like orcs :/ In fact, if I had looked at the last group picture before the previous close-ups I wouldn't have guessed they were converted at all A pale, rotting flesh colour might have been better to make them less orcy, but all the teeth and bones on them don't help either.

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

Actually think I agree with you on the colour scheme, lordsigmund. When I do some more I will paint them a bit differently - will also serve as a means of differentiating the squads.

I'm not so much worried about the overall orky shape, though, since orks are just as likely to die of Nurgles Rot and become plaguebearers as anything else.

The new flamers are now under way. Assembled, based and soon to be painted.

I decided that I needed one of them to be distinguishable as the guy with bolt of Tzeentch so I went about trying to model that. Here are the results, tell me what you think.

    Re: Daemonic Incursion

So, the time since my last update in this post is almost criminal. In that time though, I have not been idle... so here are my the models I've finished since my last post, a Balrog, repurposed as a Bloodthirster and a daemon prince who was, once upon a time, an Iron Warriors Warsmith.

    The Bloodthirster:
