I like the Caos Dwarf scheme. I was expecting red, since that's kinda the default color, but the blue stands out nicely. Curse your skills though, since lately I've been compelled to skim through the Chaos Dwarf offerings on ebay. You're going to cost me money.

That aside the hawk riders look great as a group. I agree with your assessment of the newest sculpt. It's a touch awkward. It's a pity you couldn't have turned the head forward so it looks like she's looking at the enemy.

That DE corsair model is one of my favorites from GW. I used to have one but sold it away along with my druchii model, much to my regret. Love what you've done with him.

Congratulations on the trophy, well deserved. The wood elves look great and very dynamic. It would not occur to me as an army for models from other armies but they fit painted up, although the head might be a bit over the top. But it wwould have been a shame to ruin a nice sculpt so great job there. Also it would be plausible for at least a few Nagarythe to have stayed as well.

Thanks! The blue is both kind of the "standard" regular dwarf colour, which I tihnk puts a nice spin on it, and also gives it a bit of a "Swedish" touch, since I wanted them to have a snow-theme to heighten the contrasts as elements of fire will inevitably turn up in the army. I also wanted a spot colour that would stand out. The thing that'd be even better would be bright purple!

Mohahaha, why resist? I shudder to think at the volumes of FW stuff I've got, alot of it second-hand wares...

Yeah, in hindsight I probably should've posed the warhawk riders before assembly... anyway, at least they're done!

Thanks! Def. one of my favorites, and probably one of Chris Fitzpatrick's best. I'm quite fond of the DE models as alternatives for the WE, and overall I think they work better than the HE ones. They're bit more gritty and down-to-earth. I think the assassins could make decent waywatchers for example.

Thank you! I take it you mean the severed head? I think it works because it's a human head ("Why hello there, Mr. Huntsman!"). Not sure if it's apparent in the picture but it's also a bit darker than the elf skintone in order to differentiate it.

On a side note I know we both played WE, and I am personnally really enjoying playing the Chaos Dwarves. Its a good feeling having T4, armor, and getting to lay down those templates...

Thanks - I'm not sure what to think of the FW paintjob and pictures either TBH. It's got some nice effects, like around the eyes and the mouth, but the airbrush feels a bit... uninspired. I think almost each and every one of these I've seen has been airbrushed, whereas I'm doing mine with brushes. Don't know if I'll go for stripes or anything yet, or just stick with green all over. It's pretty hard to reach in places...

Thank you! I'm quite fond of some of the red ones I've seen around the net - I think they could work with red and orange highlights too, but I seem unable to let go of my "realistical" paintjob style. Hopefully it also makes things a bit easier if I ever decide to add some stuff and field them as regular dwarves in the future. But more than anything I try to use a "nordic" choice of colours, which aren't so fantastical and more brown/military green. Sort of like Skyrim now that I think about it. If I ever do Empire they're gonna be red just like the danes though... Check out the pic below!

I can't seem to find any examples of "snow weathering" online, so it's anybody's guess how it'll turn out. I'm expecting the package from maelstrom this week, at which point I'll see about finishing the test model. The CD's will probably feel like a fresh gust of wind considering my usual WE and Beastmen...

Random is the byword of all project logs! They start out organized, only to decay into a never-ending spiral of self-deceit ("Yeah, I'll paint that up in no time at all!") and madness ("Wonder how much stuff I've really got? And how much I spent on it?") of painting and collecting more or less whatever you feel like each year.

Thanks for the praise! I'm hoping they'll give me a ring so I can tell them what I think of their "inspiration-driven-design-process" if it means WE don't get worked on ASAP! And their arbitrary rules system too. Still can't help but love Warhammer, even though she's a harsh mistress.

Anyway, not much to report on the Toad Dragon. Just drybrushed a couple of highlights on the mouth. Gonna paint the stones she's standing on and then drybrush the skin before I start working on the funky stuff. Also my mom turned 50 and we all had a party in the sun. Also, Diablo 3. So if I ever make a dwarf army out of this I need to give them warrior monks instead of slayers.

I love the concept for these little fellas! Having their horns sawn off and being encased in sealed armour. That's grim. And they look so disciplined, you can almost hear the Champion shouting orders and see them moving as one like something out of a fantasy flick - "READY ARMS! BRACE SHIELDS!" Unstoppable, unbreakable. Gotta love 'em. Or fear them as they bear down upon your undisciplined rabble of lizards, artillery falling alla round your troops... Yeah, I think grim, evil dwarves from the land of ice & snow works pretty well.

You know, my local game store has a great big box of unsold Chainmail minis. It's been a while since I've looked, but I'll swing by to check later today. Failing that, the actual order number of the box was "WOC88730 Azer Trooper" which could possibly help you find it online. I also did a little research, & it looks like it was released in the 3rd wave of Chainmail minis around 2001, and only ever sold as a blister, so you won't find it in box sets.

Explains why I never saw it before - I only think we ever got the first wave in the small town where I lived back then. Also - miniature gaming has really declined since then. Sweden. Last I heard business in Copenhagen was thriving (I commute there daily), but I've never bought anything there (went to the GW store once, it was a cramped space in a cellar) since the prices across the bridge drop by 20% when you take the currency into account.

You should learn Danish Muninn! If you don't know it already I can promise you it'll make for an entertaining challenge.

Anyway, the package from Maelstrom arrived and I set about fixing the test model.

For the base I applied a vallejo Snow & Foam solution, and then I just dipped it into a pot of GF9 Snow flock. I think the base needs to use a bright or possibly blue base colour for the effect to look like the thick snow I wanted it t be, but nonetheless it turned out OK. For the other modls there'll be something sticking out to break the monotomy, like flock or tufts or rocks, etc.

The thing I wanted to get some feedback on was the white weathering powders though - I read the tips on FWs site which suggested using white spirits for them, but white spirits for me translates into "lacknafta" which is commonly used to strip miniatures of paint... Also tried diluting them with water but that only seemed to turn them into white paint, basically.

So, here's what I did (and I would very much like you to tell me what I should've done!):

1. Liberally applied the white weathering powder using a dry brush to simulate the effect of falling snow. Looked great, maybe a bit on the heavy side with the effects, but cool nonetheless.

2. Gave the miniature a coat of matte varnish. This seemed to dissolve or blow away something like 75-80% of the weathering powder. Now he looks like a regular guy - some of the weathering powder might've left a streak in his beard or on his back, but the effect on the shield is basically gone. Check it out:









I think I actually want him to have a heavier snow coating on the mail skirts, shoulders and maybe a bit on the head, but how to achieve this without the weathering powder evaporating or just ending up as streaks of wet paint?

Had a second go at the weathering powder, this time first applying blobs of water and then sprinkling blobs of it down from above.

On his back this became a couple of big streaks as I tried manipulating it, but it gave a nice powdery effect on the shield. As I applied the varnish though it vanished completely, on the plus side it also got rid of the streaks on his back.

Some of the thicker blobs, around his hips and feet remain and these show the effect I wanted - not thick snow, but powdery, like you'd get on your body in a snow storm.

I'm pleased with him now in any case and I think to have any more on him might've been overdoing it anyway, so this is how he'll stay. Tips on working with the powders would be greatly appreciated!

I like the blood in the snow. I'm not sure if it's purposeful or incidental, but I appreciate how some of the bloody snow looks pinkish, like how a color seeps into a snow cone. Adds some credence to me.

Aaaaah! You're thinking of "Usch Då!". We say that in Sweden. Not sure if they use the expression in Norway as well, but could very well be. Generally we use it in the former context, but could work for the second one too.

I opted for finishing the basing before proceeding with the rest of the miniature. Her skin is all done, but I'm on the fence about whether I should drybrush the scaled areas in a brighter shade maybe.

Will also paint the grass flock in yellow and bleached bone. Enough stuff on the base already or do you guys think it needs more?







Would've liked to add a corpse or domething in there but I don't have anything ATM sadly...
