Re: The Decline of the Lord Of The Rings

Bringing it back to Topic, given the responses of the last couple of weeks (2 months) I would say that there is still a lot of interest in the games. The only problem we really see is a lack of promotion in GW-stores and WD and a lack of players because of that.

Generally speaking, giving totals is fine (after all, that's how armylists are presented too!), but costs of individual models, especially 'smurf (12) with shield (1) and smurf axe (2) is not. Of course, discussing smurfs in the LotR section of these forums is not ok under any circumstances.

On the topic of armylistsbuilding, I don't fully understand why people complained about problems for hordes, as it is elite armies that are hit much harder I feel. While it is true that you will now have to spend more points on heroes - points usually spent on other big things like a drum, trolls or various other things - horde forces could generally be bigger than before (no model limit) especially when compared to other armies (Dwarves and Elves, but more on those later). For every 100pts, a Moria player can field exactly 1 captain and 12 goblin warriors, all with equipment. At 700pts, that's a potential 91 models: 16 more than would've been allowed with the LoMe system. Did I mention the new standard play size (for GT's at least) seems to have become 1000pts?
On the other hand, elite armies. They usually had relatively few heroes, but also not much need for them. After all, an Elven army needs no leaders with high F to counter elites of an enemy, nor do they need the leadership in terms of courage: the ordinary soldiers already are better in those areas than most heroes the opponent would have.
So in 700pts, I would field 2 heroes with a 'High Elf' army, filling up the rest with as many warriors as possible in order to reach a more-or-less reasonable amount of models. In 500pts, a single big hero (Gil-galad, Glorfindel) was enough. Now, even in 500pts I'd need 2 heroes and would either have: 1 big hero, 1 captain-level hero, a banner and 23 warriors, or 3 small heroes, but not enough points to fill out more than 2 warbands. So about 26 models max. Dwarves face similar problems, with similarily priced heroes but cheaper - but relatively still expensive - warriors. Will be interesting to see how this develops and what armies are present in the GT top-20 in the next few years. I know I've already dusted off my Moria horde!

you'd see about 40-45 goblins, durbuz, maybe 2 shamans and a troll and/or drums.

lets say you took out one warband, so down to 58. you can now add a drum, or a troll and sub a few captains for shaman. you'd still be roughly 10 models above the 50 model limit LOME applied at 500 points. the army is now similar to what you had before.

so evidently warbands doesn't really solve the horde issue that well. you can also just breach that old 50 model limit with an orc horde. 4 warbands of captain/shaman with orc warriors comes in at roughly 470 points, so you can even take a budget wraith over a captain, or throw in a banner etc. gondor can also spam captains and basic warriors combined with damrod and archers to hit 39 with 80 points to go. this in turn is enough for another captain and 2 fountain court guard, bring the total up to 42. just 8 below the old legions limit (not a half bad force for it either, given the fight 4 and shootyness of rangers)

So you can still make spammy hordes if you want too, you can even breah the old LOME limits if you want too. So given the current incarnation of warbands does not in fact do a great deal to stop horde armies being hordes (just makes getting them together in the army list a bit more annoying) then its not exactly solving the horde issue is it.

current form of warbands isn't an improvement, at best it's just different. needs more thought put towards it then just a blanket 12 models per hero. the current system does shut down a lot of old combos and makes allies a bit awkward without really solving many issues for it. that really isn't a positive change imo. The concept can work, just not as it is right now

Other than some player speculation, did anyone say it was supposed to?
All I wanted to do was show the possibilities under the new system. You've stated how restrictive the warbands are, making the point in other threads that larger armies would not work. I just wanted to test the math.

I'm not saying one system is better than the other, and I do like some of your suggestions (like more expensive heroes leading larger warbands).

I might just say that between Green Dragon and myself we have just started working on our fourth LOTR army... =D It is still alive, at least in this household!

Likewise (3 for me). I'm still picking up the odd hero or elite for my Rohirim and Minas Tirith armies, but I also just picked up a bunch of elves off someone else, so I'll likely end up buying some figs for that list as well.

Just recently started getting into LotR after ignoring it for about a decade and it seems GW have gutted their range. The only proper nazgul I can find are finecast and on foot! Looks like theyve done away with that really nice mounted gandalf the grey mini too.

Hey Peregrin, I've been reading some of your 4th age posts in the other sub-board, great to see somebody else with the LOTR passion like us. I used to have a fourth age supplement PDF on my computer that a group of people put together, wish I could find that again.

Me and missericacourt have just gotten ourselves a copy of "battle companies" and are about to embark on our journey into giving that a go, I always thought that some of my regular old warriors had characters of their own - excited to give this a go.

@justsumguy it is a shame that they've done away with great models like that - but on the other hand it has left a little room for the inevitable barrage of releases coming shortly to coincide with the Hobbit, new poses and whatnot for all characters

Thats true though the nazgul arent in the hobbit. Its kind of odd that I cant field the riders in black on horses. Plus, the hobbit minis are going to be finecast which I feel will ruin a great range of figures.

They've also done away with that brilliant mounted gandalf the white mini. The one thats on the WotR cover!

You mean the generic Nazgul, right? Probably for variety, but most of the army lists emphasize the 'Named' wraiths (Khamul, Betrayer, Tainted, etc.) and so you can get each of those on horse. That's fine if you have a specific army list in mind (Khamul leading Easterlings, Knight of Umbar leading Corsairs, etc.), but having to buy 4 to 9 'named' versions just to be able to play through some of the Fellowship scenarios is a bit rediculous.

Will there be any hobbit milita in multi-part plastic (even if it's not multi-part but just plastic)? My friend will get into Lord of the rings if the hobbits are released this way

Re: The Decline of the Lord Of The Rings

@Peregrin Yeah I mean the generic ones. Some of the named ones are nice but theyre not 'the nine' if you get me. Fine for epic, high fantasy WotR games but not for more low key games. A large part of the menace of the nine is the mystery and I feel thats lost when theyre in battle mode.

TBH I'm just a little peeved that a lot of really nice minis are gone and for no real reason. They could have easily made them mail order only.

Id also like to say that I think the reason for the decline is that the game seems too limited. I believe this is down to the way the game has been marketed. you never see conversions bar the odd head swap or original colour schemes. When you do see painted armies in WD they seem to be painted no higher than tabletop standard. It makes the game and setting feel a little dull and is in stark contrast to warhammer and 40k.

Re: The Decline of the Lord Of The Rings

I think a lot of the disappeared models will be re-released in resin some time soon.
Especially Gandalf the Grey and the Ringwraiths mounted are just necessary for gameplay (unlike, for example, Aragorn pose #17, no matter how nice he was). Not that I'm all too happy with that change, especially not if: 1) it happens so suddenly you don't have the opportunity to buy a proper metal version and 2) the model is unavailable for months in advance.

I have so many models of Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin, that I could probably field a WotR formation of a couple of companies of them. So I don't need any plastics, but that's just me.
