Re: Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing

@AtmanAbecedarian- thanks very much, I really like the chaos bitz and am tempted to use them primarily throughout the army. The armour just looks older and cooler IMO.
@MrDee- Thanks for your comments mate, I love your guard thread, its very inspiring.

I have settled on a mini as a base for my version of Belial:

I love the retinue he comes with- they seem very Dark Angels-y also the separation of pieces on the main mini makes it possible to de-inquisitorfy him somewhat also he's big and will look in scale with my main force!

looking good! More fodder for my Grey Knights (noting the heretical use of grey knight parts! Typical Dark Angel Heresy...) 1000 point game next week?

Re: Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing

Thanks matey! Call it 1500pts and you're on, no rush though as I'm around til September now not July.

OT/ So the next ten sets of robed legs would've turned up this morning. Except the postman didn't bother to ring the doorbell. I was sitting in the front room as the post showed up. Went to the door, envelope, envelope, bills, junk mail... oh whats this? sorry you were out? Erm no. Went straight outside and he'd gone. Guess now the students have gone home there wasn't anything else to do on my street and he wasn't going to hang around for one customer. Or y'know do his job.

    sorry.

    /Rant.

    Adam

EDIT and obviously I can't just go to the post office sorting house today because he's still somewhere on his rounds... *sigh* its not like I had anything to do tomorrow...

    I feel your pain.

I once had a £200 assault vest and about £100 of molle webbing left at the bottom of my drive, on the main road because the post man couldn't be bothered to drive up the drive 30 metres to the front door, lucky I live towards dartmoor and theres no bugger about. Still I waited for him the next morning and "had words" that was back when I was a scarey para type person. He never did it again........

    *edit*

Re: Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing

My its been a productive couple of days.

@MrDee- thanks for your sympathy; had I known what I was being delivered I would have been very annoyed: It was not the package from Micro Art Studio, who are incredibly reliable and strongly recommended, but from Forge World(!) I received my order of Hector Rex in two days. From Forge World.

This unprecedented event was improved by the arrival of said Mirco Art Studio bits the next day!

So I've got a fair bit of Deathwing stuff in the pipeline. Here goes:

Belial counts as (to be named), rear view
let me know if you spot any more =][= symbols (except the ones on the thighs). I think I did a good job of turning this sculpt into a Dark Angel. I can't wait to paint him!

The purchase of this set left me with some more watchers in the dark too:

I removed the piping from the sword bearer and have some work to do on the shield bearer.

The army now looks like this:

I have 5 more chaos terminator torsos and am hoping to get some more through trades. I am now in deperate need of thunder hammers and arms, I even have something pretty to trade people for it:

    oooh shiny...

    cheers!

Consider me subscribed. Any chance of a photo of one of your terminators next to one from the black reach boxed set? Love the attention to detail by the way.

Re: Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing

    Hey,

thanks for all the responses guys- its nice to have an audience (did I mention I'm an actor?)

@salarath- cheers for the ever so constructive and heartfelt thoughts mate. An inspiration to us all. Just wait til I give your tin cans/ 'Grey Knights' a taste of my Dark Eldar at 1500 pts :P

@liloser2010- that we should. A joint hunt for the fallen sounds like a cracking idea.

@Proiteus- Thanks very much, my love of detail stems from my 54mm Inquisitor days! I'll grab a scale shot for you when I return to Exeter (so probably on Wednesday next week) I'm a big fan of your projects and will be interested to see your thousand sons develop!

I jumped on a train to Sheffield today to surprise my dad for his birthday. He was surprised and, thankfully, happy to see me! I'm at home for the weekend and whilst that means no painting it does mean I can chill out AND go through my old bitz boxes. Y'know from last time I did Dark Angels

    here's what I found:

Belial from my previous army; I like the mini. May update him a bit but he's at least going to be a sergeant!

Dark Angels/ Terminator bitz! I'm still searching for thunder hammers, storm shields and DA iconography. drop me a PM!

I'm going to try to raid my mate's bitz box on Sunday- I'll update you on what I manage to pilfer!

    cheers

Re: Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing

I have returned to Exeter having spent a lovely weekend at home for my Dad and my grandmother's birthdays- I surprised them both; neither knew I was going to turn up!

I also managed to meet up with a bunch of mates from home. Including my long time gaming and painting buddy Andy (Peaoui on the forum). Turns out he's been making great progress with his Alpha Legion and a few Iron Warriors in his time outside of work; we're trying to set up a log for him but he doesn't have a camera and apparently he can't figure out how to use my photobucket links that I sent to him after he brought his minis over- will require a phone call I imagine...

The upshot for this thread (cleverly back on topic I hope you approve!) is that Andrew had lots and lots of terminator and Dark Angel bitz lying around completely unused.

    I managed to pilfer:

    1x cyclone missile launcher
    2x power fists
    2x storm bolters
    1x power sword
    1x assault cannon
    10+ DA symbols
    2x Dark Angels Banners
    1x chainfist

I also raided my bitz box(es) and found even more stuff.

The sum total of the above is 1 Happy Panda (me).

That and the following squad of terminators, gleefully assembled this evening by said panda.

    Sergeant

    Chainfist terminator

Assault Cannon terminator, striding along over rough ground scanning the battlefield for targets (very pleased with this guy)

    Cyclone Missile Launcher dude

    TH/SS guy #1 (of many)

    and, finally, a group shot:

I'm very pleased with these guys. I will try to clean them up a bit in the light of day- a bit of mould line removal wouldn't go amiss, nor would gun barrel drilling and gap filling. But tonight feels a lot later than it is and I need to drive around checking out venues for my play tomorrow morning then fit in some line learning and a rehearsal before lunch and some painting/ gaming at my FLGS.

I will try to get that scale shot for you all (and especially Proiteus) when I nip in to the FLGS.

so any thoughts on this next bunch? Be lovely to hear some new voices as well as those of the faithful!

    cheers

Very very nice conversions man! I really like what you have done with these guys, the combination of the empire fantasy bits and the DA parts is very very effective. I think that you have managed to capture a very John Blanchian feel about them. Your painting technique enhances that dark atmosphere that suits the DA's very well. [What are the watchers in the dark really anyway?]

I like your chapter theme, get a few whit lions from the High Elf chariot and shoehorn them into the army too. [you could use them as mounts and play a space wolves counts as army but that just may be taking the analogy too far!]

Excellent work I will be following this blog to see how it progresses.

    Panda has done well
My fav is the assault cannon, his pose is so dynamic. The thunderhammer guy looks great too. Well done on the whole squad man.
I'll dive into my bits box. Might have some hammers and shields.
    When can I expect moar?

Re: Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing

Lovely to get some responses on these guys thanks a lot!

@thoughtfox- John Blanche is a phenominal artist, certainly my favourite of GW stock, although that sometimes seems controversial nowadays for some reason. I actually met him at the 2nd annual Inquisitor Grand Tournament at Nottingham a couple of years ago and he signed my =][= rule book! I have his sketch book and use it for inspiration all the time.

Funny you should mention the high elf lions- I used to have a Lion cavalry army. Tempted to track down 1 lion as a stand in terminator now... Cyber mastiff for Belial perhaps...

@AtmanAbecedarian- I'm so glad you're enjoying the work I'm doing and in particular the Assault Cannoneer. He's a fave of mine too. Please do have a root around in your bitz box for hammers and shields. Expect more soon- just finished something BIG (see below)

I found one more DA storm shield today in a box I'd forgotten about. I may be able to use some of the Space Hulk terminator arms and torsos if I'm really nice to Salarath and possibly paint the dead one up as an objective!

Just so you know what's been slowing up my painting on these guys:

check out the tale of three occasional painters log (see sig) for more details on this chap. I painted him in one sitting!

    cheers

Re: Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing

Fair enough, he wasn't very convincingly a member of the Deathwing or a Champion of El'Johnson.

I was going to spend the morning putting the finishing touches on some warriors of chaos for a friend. (4 done, 6 basecoated, 10 undercoated) But I found a couple of interesting parts in my bitz box and a fresh roll of GS. So these guys were born instead:

Hammer from =][= Preacher Josef, shield from DA vets sprue

Ex-apocathery, this guy needed extensive resculpting and rescuing. His hammer is based on the force staff from the GKs, I figured Sal would get another one in his next box... Hammer head is from another Preacher Josef (I have a lot of Inquisitor models) shied is DA vet sprue again

the third thunder hammer and storm shield guy has the hammer from the Empire General (with the detail filled) and the shield from the assault marine veteran sergeant

Army shot so far (who's the odd one out?)

I'm very happy with how these are going. I haven't got any more torsos now though so I need to grab a box of terminators. Need one more cyclone missile launcher (have one in the box and one assembled) and a lot of thunder hammers. I think I have two more sets of robed legs so I need to place another order too.

Probably do some more painting before then as I'm currently skint!

hope you like the new additions as much as I do!

Nice job on the custom hammers, and posing of the termies. The group shot is epic. Playing against that many termies would be painful.
And even though it isn't part of the DA, nice work on the nid

this is turning into a nice looking army. Rex is a shaping up to be a nice stand in.
have you thought about adding full robes over the upper body to a couple of the termies?

Re: Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing

Thanks for the responses guys. I've managed to track down 5 more chaos torsos from Salarath and have at least two more sets of robed legs and maybe even a storm shield... I'll try to make up a couple more thunder hammer guys before the end of the week. Then I'll get some painting done whilst trading/ buying the rest of the force.

@AtmanAbecedarian- Glad you like the Hive Tyrant; I was very pleased with the results.
@Halaker- my pleasure. The Chaplain is now undercoated so when I get a chance I'll paint him; not going to rush it though!
@Lt.DustyMillar- I have a couple of damaged imperial terminator torsos and it had crossed my mind that sculpting upper body robes could salvage them. I'm also considering using the Black templar robed torso on a couple of guys although I'd then have to worry about upscaling the regular legs too...

Re: Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing

I managed to assemble the next two terminators much more quickly than I had anticipated. I've figured out how to do the basic conversions quite easily now which helps.

First up is another Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield guy:

I really like how he looks although I will replace the hammer head when I get some proper thunder hammers through trades! The head is from the brettonian archers set. I like the grizzled look it gives him. I had to do quite a bit of resculpting on the breastplate and the additional vox caster especially and am pleased with how it came out. Kudos for the conversion of the hammer's pose has to go to Salarath whose terminators some of these used to be.

Next up is a WIP cyclone missile launcher operator

Still needs his storm bolter- I may have to bite the bullet and buy a box of termies soon...

I thought I'd show you the three types of 'truescale' marines I've done so far:

left to right, traitor marine as Col Straken for my guard, using lots of old chaos knight parts and a LOT of GS/ guitar wire, next is the chplain using GK torso and micro arts legs with CSM termie shoulder and CSM head and finally a more standard Lamenter/ Synapse pattern truescale marine which Peaoui is going to be painting next time I'm at home as an Imperial fist!

Finally is a side painting project that I'm working on for a friend

he's making a chapter called the Astral Ursa using the SW codex so lots of thunderBEAR cavalry. I've got to paint/ convert one. Will post WIP pics here too since its imperial

Thinking about mocking up some obliterators using the CSM termi legs and all the left over guns I have (+ a lot of GS) will probably resurrect my traitor guard thread when I get round to it!

    so thoughts? comments?
