Not too bad at all. I'm guessing the new version of the rules will be out by then.
I'm surprised at how many open days they are having.
Hopefully they record more of this one and put it online.

Beasts of War have a "kitbash a warpath vehicle" conversion competition, the winning entry (as chosen by beasts of war) will go into production.
Not sure about this, the design they end up with is going to be limited by the fact that it's kludged together from 40k parts.. concept art method is much better, it doesn't restrict you. If this were a concept art competition I would be all over it and probably end up producing vehicle designs for every model in the forgefather army list.
I will be really disappointed if the winning entry looks like ass and mantic actually uses it instead of paying Mike McVey to come up with something good. I've been very impressed with the vehicle designs so far (in fact, my only criticism is that the raptor would have looked better if the sculpt stuck to the concept art, which was more detailed, realistic and less "wacky racers").

Interesting idea... That could potentially bring in some nasty copyright problems too. However, it doesn't specifically say the winning entry will be cast up, the winning entry will serve as inspiration for a model. Plus they get to choose the winner, I am sure they won't pick a really bad looking model as the winner.
More people can probably express themselves building a model than can draw it on paper.
EDIT re-read what I wrote and it made no sense! Corrected it now.

It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye... and then it's just fun!

I'm with Immortal Reaper. If they're going to run a design contest, they should run a design contest. Just look at their scoring - 25% of the points are allocated to WIP info, and at least another 25% are allocated to modelling. If it came down to one design with 9 points out of 10 for Proficiency and Creativity and one with 0 points out of 10, why would you choose to put the latter into production just because it's got a diorama and a step-by-step guide to failure?
Is this for any warpath related vehicle?
That seems a bit broad, and even though there are specifics in the competition I kind of feel that they aren't saying "don't just slightly convert a GW kit" strongly enough.
I might do it, if I find enough bit and think of something in time.
...Maybe I'll make a wheel barrow.
First picture of the plastic Forgefathers:
Can't quite make out if they're based on the dwarf ironwatch sprue or not.
There looks to be some major repetition of heads, and from what I can make out the heads do look similar to the KoW ones. The overall "hunch" to the models and the direction of the feet is again, similar, but inconclusive.

Small picture of Mantic blog, there seems to be the plastic Forge Fathers there. Can any one see if they are based on the Kings of War dwarves?

Beat me to it![]()
New pic, from the newsletter:
Still inconclusive, can't tell if the gold bits on the top of the helmets indicate new head sculpts, or if they're just painted on.
Same goes for the googles and enclosed heads, not sure if those are an add-on piece like the marauder gasmask designed to sci-fi up the heads.

The "leader" of the Forgefather regular unit seems to be based on the dwarf crew sprue, looking at the body and possibly the pointing arm/hand.
Nah, the artillery crew has the left hand pointing, not the right. also, if you're looking at the guy with the red base, that's a resin-plastic model that we've already seen.
That said, after further inspection, I'm now 95% certain that these are based on the ironwatch. Look at the knees - there is a round metal plate on them almost diretly above the boot, just the same as the the KoW dwarfs.
Also, if you look at the posing on the 2 sets of legs... one of them with the feet spread out, the other with them closer together... that's another similarity.
Then, you can just about make out a square loincloth on the "leader" with the pistol at the front.
Finally, look at the shadows between the legs.. one half of the models has a gap between the legs, the other doesn't. Matches up with the ironwatch, where half of them have cloaks.
I really can't tell if I like them or not, so far my squinting has determined "definitely not as nice-looking as the resin plastics" and not a lot else.
The lack of armour that comes from re-using the fantasy models is a concern. Not sure if I can really swing them as space marine proxies if they have the cloth trousers and leather boots of the ironwatch.
I'm not opposed to sprue re-use per se, but what I do want is some variety, so from that perspective it would have been nicer if mantic based the forgefathers on the 5-dwarf ironclads rather than the 2-dwarf ironwatch, to give us more components. We got 5 different bodies and a ton of components for the marauders, so the forgefathers getting the same treatment would have been nice... I think you have to have some positive there to counteract the fact that the sprue is getting re-used, especially with a sprue like the dwarf ironwatch which has now been copy + pasted into 4 different kits (ironwatch, artillery, shieldbreakers, steel warriors).
I also think that mantic would have been better off designing these hybrid plastics from the start to work as both sci-fi and fantasy models, rather than making fantasy models then turning around and thinking "lets sci-fi them up"... the decision is best made in advance so the sculptor can sculpt both sets at the same time and make sure it works.
At least the Marauders look great as a 40-strong horde.![]()

You might be right, looking at my ironwatch and pictures on the website. They do look similar.
Slightly bigger pic...

I'm pretty sure it's the same legs. What I can't decide is whether or not there's only 1 torso or not on these. It's possible it might be 1 torso/arm set with the head separate. I'd like a bit more variety, but for what it is, it doesn't bother me. Heck, the first time I went to Gen Con, I remember telling Ronnie that I thought the Ironwatch were just about useable for Sci-Fi as they were.
