It may help to know that a mage who suffers a miscast ontop of a Fulcrum not only triggers the usual miscast, but also a cataclysmic one, of the likes of 'each model within 12" suffers a S10 hit' etc (this is btw one of the most direct one, there are also FUN things that can happen. Fun for observers, of course). If you eff up on top of a fulcrum, you REALLY will regret it.

Ha! Yeah, that does sound entertaining.

Sounds like it will at least mean more of the kind of game where you end up breathless with laughter. Like the one where my opponent's unit of 8 zombies killed my Bloodthirster, that was a classic.

What happened with Quality Control?

Although I am thrilled over this massive release I just cannot get past the fact that GW has produced yet another (actually two) sculpts to rival Nagash and Pumbagor for the "Worst Miniature Of All Time"-award.

The Chimera is "MacDonalds toy meets soft plastic Godzilla" and beyond critique (Epic Fail).

The Manticore has some merit - but is nevertheless shockingly bad.
What happened with the approach Jes Goodwin took while sculpting the excellent Cold Ones (studying anatomy etc.)???

Compare the above with the excellent (although quite small) sculpt below - and see what could have been...
The head, mouth, teeth, horns, pose, claws etc. of the Raging Heroes Manticore is just superior - making the GW one look clumsy and as if sculpted in Play Dough.

No, that's not right. Rolling two or more sixes on 6D6 is actually ~26%.

Chance of rolling no sixes on six dice:
(5/6)^6
~0.33

Chance of rolling one six on six dice:
6*(1/6)*(5/6)^(5)
~0.4

Any other result (ie. two or more sixes) on six dice:
1-(0.33+0.4) = 0.26

I hate these tidbits cause I just want to know more ...lol. I do wonder though how this can work so a smaller scale, when something like this would kill a bigger percentage out of the army.

So am I to understand that there will be no new models for High Elves, Wood Elves, Brettonians, Lizardmen, Empire, etc. and this is just a supplement for the Forces of Disorder? That's a bit disappointing.

There is nothing to say that the forces of order won't be released. Just because we haven't seen anything yet, doesn't me we won't. Personally, I believe that every army will more or less get around the same amount of new stuff or at the least, they won't completely ignore an army.

I hadn't noticed the Manticore's "hands" before...that's rather awkward. Is that actually how they're attached? The join between shoulder and mane looks incorrect, like it's been photoshopped or something.

EDIT: Well, both of the Manticores on the group shot have that weird join, so it must be the model. Sad day.

However, the skulls on the wing don't seem to be on the wing - they look like part of the staff/scythe as they only appear on the mage-mounted version.

Looks like one of the worst models released in ages. I'd even say its worse than the Pumbagor, and it's much worse than the current Manticore which also wasn't a stellar model.

Yeah, so true, sadly. I was thinking it was salvageable, but looking again it appears not.

I'll probably stick with the conversion I made out of Arbaal the Easily-Defeated and Dieter Helsnicht's manticore - models which were pretty poor even when they were new, which was over 15 years ago!

Have to agree with the manticore assessment, that just isn't very nice at all. Not sure either of the following two would be much of an improvement though; they have a very Final Fantasy aesthetic going on. Nice certainly, but not in keeping with the Warhammer look.

I expect that kind of crap from Trish, but Jes has been the one constant in that company. Everything that man puts out is gold! How can the same man that gave us the dark eldar and some of the best GW has to offer give us that!?!!?

If that really is a Jes scuplt the only explanation I can think of is if GW went to him and said "Ok you have to sculpt this but do it in 1 tenth of the time you would normally have GO!!!!!", or it was take your kid to work day.....

I am starting to get concerned that with all of GW's new "Reforms" one of them was to speed up production time on model design..... If this is true the Dark Eldar release might have been the Swan Song of GW models.

My hope is that controlling a magic fulcrum will have some significant benefit to dispelling as well; possibly the power and dispel dice you get will be be based on number of fulcrums controlled, and hopefully cataclysmic miscasts are unavoidable and restricted to the caster on the fulcrum (so you can use an item to pawn it off on someone else).

With boosted dispel abilities as well then the possibility will exist for stalemates, so the armies will still be important as they'll be the only way to break those stalemates and tip the balance one way or the other.

I'm hoping that the army books updated so far show a trend of more sensible magic, but it could just mean the silly magic writers have been busy working on Storm of Magic. I'm hoping a spell's strength will be more dependent upon how much you beat casting value by, minus how much your opponent's dispel roll beat the casting value by; so even a failed dispel roll can reduce some of the impact, and you can make a dispel roll against irresistible force to at least dissipate some of the energy.

If it's all about silly magic wiping out armies then I won't be getting the rules or playing any games, as the magic is the part I absolutely hate about 8th; most of the time its fine but some of the time it just ruins otherwise good games, so if Storm of Magic makes it any worse then it'll just be unplayable. I'm tempted to give GW the benefit of the doubt, but they haven't really earned that much.

They certainly don't disappoint on the models. I do agree that the scenery range as a whole is far too magic-duel oriented; I would kill for them to release a some proper army or area-themed "normal" scenery like towns, mines, other fortified buildings, or a river set. Right now the scenery range is looking to be 90% magic "thing". I really want the Eternity Stair; it's obviously just re-used a ton of the details from Witchfate Tor, but that only means it'll look even cooler on top of one, maybe with the Balewind Vortex on top of that…
