Re: historical miniatures that would sync with mantic

I recently got two boxes of Perry Plastics: Mercenaries and WOTR Soldiers. Both sets are great and have a ton of pieces, all of it well cast and notably NOT heroic scale! I really like the basic infantry... they look like the old-school 5th ed Empire plastics in ways, only far better and very proportionate.

Why a bunch of those? Zombies of course!! The zombies/ghouls sync up nicely, though the zombie hands look a little big on the Perry figs (open hands at least). I intend on a mix between Mantic, Perry, and whatever other stragglers I can hire (reanimate).

How did you buy from Perry? Their website is not very informative and I heard some talk on frothers that they were not around.

I had been planning to send them a cheque in the post along with the ordering information, but if they are not around at the moment that might be a bit difficult.

Regarding syncing up your miniatures, another range that makes very proportionate figures that should match Perry is Hasslefree, which also follows a 28mm 'true' scale. In the US you have Red Box, which produces really beautiful sculpts. These are more expensive than Hasslefree but the sculpts are really very well done. They are advertised as 32mm but this is to the top of the head of human figures, so in fact they are only about 1mm bigger than Hasslefree and Perry, which is expected in normal human variation.

Yeah the Perry website is not all that great.. I bought mine from Maelstrom Games, I'm pretty sure Wayland also stocks them so go with whichever you prefer.

Same here, Maelstrom. You get 3 frames of 12 troopers (either the WOTR or Mercs) and 2 command sets (the heavy armored models, bits, stuff).

Thanks for the recommend on Red Box, I'll check out their range again. I find that is one that updates quite quietly, and over the course of a few months the release a bunch/OOP some.

Maelstrom does not stock the range that I am looking for, unfortunately, so I m stuck with getting it direct from the Perry website. I m looking to get the Saracen armies for the Crusades to go with my elephant...

Perry Miniatures Saracens fit in very well with Mantic Elves

Here is a size comparison pic

There's a select few miniatures from the range that are worth getting to mix with mantic (mostly the undead), but other than that it's not the best of options.
How well do the Army of the Dead mini's mix in with Mantic Undead? Have been considering grabbing a box, but have heard the LotR range is very small compared to other 28mm realistic scale mini's out there.

As for metal eastern mini's, I have a bunch of the Crusader Miniatures Persian's and they are a perfect fit with Mantic. Some of their other stuff is a bit small, but these look really good. So that might be another option.

Thanks for the suggestion JoV. Actually I have already gone with the Perry Saracens - got a nice little mountain of lead although I have yet to get started on actually painting any of them...the rate at which I get them painted I will probably be old and toothless by the time I finish painting them up

I put up the scale comparison pic only as an aid to any other people who might also be wanting to see how these stack up together - do you have any pics of your Crusader chaps along with the Mantic figures?

Its kinda hard to show, since I have tried to be good and have all my mantic stuff finished and based up before my kickstarter stuff arrives , but they are very close in size and proportions

From left you have a Crusader persian (I gave them different shields to ones they come with to fit them into my medieval themed army), gripping beast viking, some skellys, another persian, and a Perry mercanary. They are all virtually interchangable imo.

You can use Old Glory and Musketeer miniatures too if you want the Eastern look. Sadly I don't have either of them, but they look good.

Perry plastic WotR sets. Fantastic set, you can't go wrong by using those for mantic.

Thanks for the response Tonny and zirrian. I have already gone with Perry's Saracens, thats why I posted the link to the scale comparison pic. It was just to show anyone else who came across this thread that they were a very good fit with the Mantic metal elves.

Thanks boogle. But I thought the Warlord Romans were supposed to be much smaller? I have a bunch of their Celts and these fit in very very nicely with the Mantic elves scale wise, but as they are bigger than the Romans, I expected the Romans to be too small.

Can you tell me what the height of the Romans is in mm? Or better if you have any comparison pics...

Thx. I really like some of their Roman figures but never got any because I thought they would be shorties

The best Google came up with is this:

    http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...AB/eir_bar.jpg

Regrettably it's not a straight 'side by side' comparison, but should give you a general idea. I haven't had any in my hands, but judging by the photo I think they're comparable in size, it's just that the Celts are in a stretched out 'jumping into the air' pose while the Romans are a bit more static and braced behind the shield.

Re: historical miniatures that would sync with mantic

Thanks for the pic Don. I m not sure its just because of the stretched out poses. I remember reading somewhere that Warlord deliberately made their Celts a little larger than their Romans because historically the Gauls were supposed to be bigger sized than Romans, think it might have been the Warlord forum itself.

I don't know about the romans, but their pike and shotte minis are pretty exact 28 mm so should fit well with Mantic.

Re: historical miniatures that would sync with mantic

I am considering using the Warlord Pike and Shotte Range for my Humans

As Mantic does not involve model removal I was going to make 'dynamically based' units.

I of the ideas I had was a Pike Horde but 'shuffling up' the Pikemen towards the rear (probably using less than 40 models!) and having the space between them and the front of the Horde Base filled with the Pikes.

I wanted to do this for 2 reasons - storage (easier than if the models are resting their Pikes so that they are pointing upwards) and I think it would look quite intimidating.

Take a look at the last picture at my blog post and you will see a Warlord Roman in a lineup with GW WFB Dwarves.

This is with the base tab sanded off so they are about 2 mm smaller than what you normally see with others but I think makes for a more accurate miniature comparison.
